The Last Boy Scout

Boy%20Scout.jpg

No, not really, but sometimes it seems that way. I snapped his picture just after Troop 14 raised the flag this morning in a wooded area on the Sewanee campus. I go every year to this Fourth of July ceremony and there seem to be fewer and fewer of them.

The university has a summer music school, so while everyone sings "America the Beautiful" and "The Star Spangled Banner" there's serious music playing. The chaplain says a prayer and we recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

The good feeling is palpable -- except for the woman with the really big camera who pushed me out of the way while I was trying to take a photo. She said, "I do this for a living."

I was going to say I do, too, but I didn't think my Digital Elph looked convincing.

There is some food in this story. After the ceremony we all walked out of the woods and had a potluck breakfast buffet.

You may not be a professional photographer, but you have a pretty decent eye for composition. I particularly like the photo of the girl holding the plate.

(Thanks! You've made my day. Elizabeth)

The warm months of the year provide a number of "patriotic" holidays: Decoration Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Armed Forces Day, to mention those that come instantly to mind.

In particular, Independence Day ought to be an opportunity to set aside current events and reaffirm what is important about the USA.

I was fortunate enough to have had such a reaffirming experience on June 30, at Fort McHenry, and I wrote about it at http://blogger1947.blog-city.com/ftmchenry630.htm. I hope those who have enjoyed Ms. Large's narrative from her trip South will read and enjoy this.

And I hope each and every one of you will get the opportunity to have such a personal reaffirmation.

Ms. Large: This boy scout photo turns up in a google image search. I'd like to use it in a workbook I'm creating. I'm a business consultant. It will be a small picture on one page of a 75+ page book. It will not be published, but just copied for my clients, although we do charge a fee for each workbook. It might also appear on in a slide presentation. I
Do I have permission?
Thanks
