Ethnic in Canton

(Karl Merton Ferron/Sun Photographer)

I got this request from Scott Wright while I was on vacation. The only suggestion I could come up with for him was the Lebanese Taverna, now open for lunch. It's not in Canton, but it is nearby. Thinking about it some more, I should have also recommended the Austin Grill. (But is Mexican food even "ethnic" anymore?)

I promised him I would post his e-mail on my blog to see if anyone had any other recommendations:

any suggestions for great "ethnic" to take work colleagues to lunch?

baltimore sun website difficult to find this information.

thank you.

If Fells Point counts, there is Cali's Court's Mezze and Z Mean Bean Cafe are also "ethnic".

Austin Grill is not Mexican food. It's Texan.

Does DiPasquales in Highlandtown count as "ethnic"? Highlandtown is just a stone's throw from Canton. I see a lot of business-type folks there for lunch - even though it is a bit casual - great food.

And if we are opening it up to Fells, I am pretty sure that Mehek, the Indian place on the square in Fells Point, does a lunch buffet? Also, Ding How on Broadway has one of the best lunch specials - OK food, but so so cheap. Two people can get out of there for less than $15 with tax and tip.

Sushi San & Thai Jai Dee at 2748 Lighthouse Point East in Canton (sushisanbaltimore.com) has Japanese and Thai offerings and is open for lunch.

Austin Grill has Texas food (ribs, etc) but definitely also Mexican (fajitas, carnitas....)

I might not have been all that clear in my last comment, so:
Kali's Court Mezze is Mediterranean and
Ze Mean Bean Cafe is Eastern European.
We ate at Mezze and were very satisfied with the food, but I am not sure it is open for lunch. Ze Mean Bean Cafe was also good and had a nice ambiance. On the other hand I would not say the food was memorable.

Sorry, but fajitas aren't Mexican food. If you go to Austin Grill's web site (or if you have eaten there) they don't even bill themselves as Mexican. They are from Austin, Texas. They are Tex-Mex. This might seem like a nit-picky point to some, but to me it's like saying Chinese and Japanese and Thai food is all the same. I love both Texan and Mexican food, but they are not the same thing.

Is Italian still ethnic? If so, Pasticcio (in the Can Companycomplex, where Franco Zeppo used to be) does a surprising good job for exceedingly reasonable prices. Been twice. Chef and/or owner is from near Naples.

Well, there isn't a ton of ethnic food in Canton, that's true, but there are a few choices.

Gecko's on Fleet is open for lunch on Thursday and Fridays.

Eichenkranz on Fagely in Brewer's Hill (which is close enough). They do German pretty well.

Greektown's not that far from Canton and you could hardly do better than Samos for a great lunch.
