The mysterious El Patron

I got this e-mail from Shayna today, but I couldn't tell her anything. The one time I tried to eat there it was closed, even though it was supposed to be open, which worried me. I haven't tried again. Can anyone help?

Elizabeth,
I've searched both your blog and The Baltimore Sun web site but can't seem to find a review or comments on El Patron. It's a Mexican restaurant in Mt. Vernon on Charles St. directly across from Donna's @ Charles and Madison . I believe a Chinese restaurant used to be in the space. Anyways, we keep driving by it and decided to go there tonight, but I was hoping to gain confidence in the decision by reading a review. Ever been?

There is a blurb about this restaurant in the latest issue of Baltimore magazine (August, I think) that seems to indicate it is open.

The blurb is in the August 2007 issue of the Baltimore Magazine on pg 260

Had drinks on a Saturday night there a few weeks back, it was only 8:00 and the place was deserted. The chips and salsa that came free with the drinks left something to be desired. My friend and I felt the place was a front for something.

I was there last Friday night... a friend of a friend has "rented out" the "club" that is on the second floor of this place. The club was called "The Mansion", and all of this is in quotes, because I couldn't find anything online about the club, and when we went, it was pretty dead. Although, it had been invite only that night, it still seemed weird, and smelled strong of bleach, which didn't help with the strange feeling. I did order some food from the downstairs restaurant... an avocado salad and a chicken quesidilla, both of which were very good. So... I'm left just as confused about this place as everyone else seems to be!
