Sauerbraten and such

eichenkranz I got this e-mail from Jerry over the weekend:

We were hoping you could recommend a local German Restaurant.  We live in Cockeysville, MD.
We used to travel to Lancaster to a restaurant called East of Eden but it has changed owners and cuisine.  We would love to find a nice local place for when the urge hits. ...

The only two I know of are Eichenkranz (611 S. Fagley St., Baltimore, 410-563-7577) and Josef's Country Inn (2410 Pleasantville Rd, Fallston, 410-877-7800). If anyone has any other suggestions, please post below.

Well, if you were willing to drive to Lancaster, you could drive to the Bavarian Inn in Sheppardstown, WV.

There is also a German place outside of York in Abbotstown, Pa. I can't remember the name.

It is a shame that Baltimore, a town in which German is the most common ancestry, has so few options to get some schnitzel.

The Old Stein Inn, Mayo Rd, Edgewater (6 -7miles south of Annapolis) is recommended for those living closer to Annapolis than Baltimore.

I'll be glad to help if I can. Shoot me an e-mail at elizabeth.large@baltsun.com and let me know what the specific problem is.

Blob's Park in Jessup is fairly close to you. I don't know how good the food is but they serve a lot of German dishes.

For really great sour beef and dumplings, go to The Silver Spring Mining Company. There is one located in Perry Hall and one in Bel Air across from the Harford Mall. You won't be disappointed!

The German restaurant in Abbottstown, PA is The Haufbrau Haus (not sure I spelled that right).

Good Morning-

If you are ever in Hagerstown, try Schmankerl Stube. Here is their URL-
http://www.schmankerlstube.com/
A friend told me about Deutsches Gasthaus near Aberdeen. Haven't been there yet. Here is their website-
http://www.deutschesgasthaus.com/

If anyone is looking for great German homemade sausages and meats try Egon Binkert on Old Philadelphia Rd. just northeast of Rossville Blvd. Binkert supplies all of the hotels in Baltimore and DC with bratwurst, bockwurst, knockwurst, etc. and makes a variety of items not commonly found. Highly recommended if you're not worried about clogging your arteries.

The food at Blob's Park is well done German. They also provide a true beer garden atmosphere.......the reason they are going strong after half a century. A truly fun experience, especially if they have the Polka Band!

I have to disagree with the poster who recommended Silver Spring Mining Co. for sauerbraten. While I like a lot of their food, I found their sour beef and dumplings to be nothing like the authentic stuff my German relatives make. I was really disappointed in it.

Eichenkranz is excellent, though.

I have to agree with the post for Silver Spring. It may not be the BEST sour beef but darn it is close. They even let you get extra dumplings which are my favorite.

Binkers has been a little cookoiut secret of my family for years. Whenever we have other guests over they always want to know where the hot dogs and sausages came from because they are sooooo good!!

I have tried Silver Springs Sour Beef and it is very good. I think Patrick's on Cranbrook Road in Cockeysville is better.

I have been to the DeutschesGastHaus in Aberdeen, and recommend it. Sehr Deutsch. And run by 2 crazy German sisters, to boot!

My late mother, from Pa. Dutch country made the best Sour Beef/Potato Dumplings ever...the closest I have come to it..and I have tried them all in Balto., etc. is the Silver Spring Inn...be in Perry Hall or Belair...and my brother will also attest to it

Josef's Country Inn in Fallston used to be considered a German restaurant. They still have a few items on the menu that you might enjoy. http://www.josefscountry.com/menu.html

For city folks who might not want to drive to White Marsh for Binkert's sausages, several varieties are carried at Fenwick Meats in the Cross Street Market and Graul's on Bellona Avenue.
