I got this e-mail from Helen:
A group of co-workers at union memorial hospital want to give a doctor a gift certificate to a vegetarian restaurant. he lives in phoenix, so a place in the I-83 corridor would be perfect.
Here was my not completely satisfactory answer, so other suggestions are welcome: ...
The only three vegetarian restaurants I can think of are Great Sage, Zodiac (1724 N Charles St.), and One World Cafe.
If they don't want to be limited to these, they could also pick an ethnic restaurant that has plenty of vegetarian options like a good Indian restaurant or, even better, the stylish new Lebanese Taverna -- something, perhaps, the doctor hasn't tried yet.

Elizabeth-The BEST (And only true) vegetarian restaurant in the I-83 corridor is Liquid Earth on Aliceanna St. in Fells Point. They use the freshest ingredients, organic whenever possible, and the food tastes great.I can't say enough positive things about the place.Smoothies are great too.

Don't make the mistake of limiting the choices to "vegetarian" restaurants. A close friend of mine is a non-meateater and we do quite well at many local upscale places. Any restaurant that works with seasonal ingredients (especially local produce) should have a number of workable choices on the menu. We sometimes order a plethora of interesting salads and appetizers instead of an antree. I recommend Tapas Teatro, Pazo, and even The Brewer's Art. The Helmand has an outstanding number of offerings.

Liquid Earth is basically a juice bar with salads and sandwiches made of ... salads. Fine for your hard core vegan or lunch, but not what I would really call a restaurant. Don't they usually have stoves? Zodiac offers vegan cooked food, salads and soups and meat and fish dishes for non-vegetarians. And it has a bar with good wines and beer. And it's on a street with various other things to do. I haven't been there for a year, but I used to go all the time and the food was great.

How can something be the only true vegetarian restaurant AND the best?
I've been there. It's a good juice bar.
I used to be a vegetarian and a raw food diet is ultimately depressing -- literally for me. It feels righteous, but ultimately boring. Indian vegatarian cooking is very sophisticated and complex. Others mentioned above have very tasty non-meat items, such as Helmand and Zodiac.
Some vegans can't eat in regular restaurants because watching people eat meat makes them angry.
Solution: healthy doses of omega-3 from some salmon belly sashimi. I traded in my Paxil for sashimi and never looked back.

Do you think that any restaurant that has vegetarian and meat choices don't use the same work areas and stoves. That's why i said Liquid Earth is a true vegetarian place because they serve NO fish or meat products. And their menu has expanded quite a bit.
