Plane food
I'm heading to LA for a long weekend this Thursday. It's a 7 p.m. flight, and whenever I do this I take dinner with me. ...
The problem is that I don't want to buy something at BWI and I don't want to fix my own at home. It has to be something that can be out of the fridge for a couple of hours as well.
I'm leaving from work, so it has to be something I can pick up at a place downtown.
For a while I was getting a dragon roll (vegetable sushi) covered with avocado slices from Whole Foods, but by the time I had opened the soy sauce and the wasabi and was eating it with either chopsticks or fingers, I could tell I was making my seatmates uncomfortable. Plus it seemed a little, I don't know, pretentious.
I tried a roasted vegetable salad from Donna's a couple of times, but it was too nervewracking going through security with it because the balsamic dressing was in a little separate container and I kept expecting them to make me throw it out.
It has to be something that will seem like a treat. Any suggestions?

Having just suffered through some very bad airline food on a recent trip, I like your idea to bring your own.
Would the Donna's salad be too soggy if you had them put the dressing on instead of keeping it in a separate container? What you really need is a clear, sanitary 3 oz. bottle that you can put the salad dressing into ahead of time, then drop it into a quart-size clear zipper bag. Then security will treat it just like any other carry-on liquid....
I once carried on a chicken burrito from Chipotle -- the way they wrap it makes it fairly drip-proof. But that may not be a sophisticated enough choice for a food critic. ;)
Have a great trip.

Okay...BWI may not have always had the best concessions, but things have changed. If you're flying Southwest, there is a great selection of food offerings, from sit down restaurant Phillips Seafood to numerous fast food offerings. Tex/Mex, Asian, and Italian options are availble.
If your'e flying American or Delta, the food court on Concourse C just opened up with Wendy's and Potbelly Sandwich Works (it is definitely NOT your standard sandwich place!)
If you're leaving from Concourse D, there's McDonalds for the kids, Quiznos for the more health conscious, and the Rum Island Cantina for a taste of the Caribbean. Also, Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company pours a GREAT cup of coffee.
So, I urge you to check out the new BWI. Its not what you remember.

my favorite food to travel with is usually from Holy Frijoles (sp) followed by coffee and cannolies from Vicarros (sp). The powdered sugar, though gets over everything.
enjoy your trip
