Family concert promises global journey

As everyone knows, the more children are exposed to classical music, the better the chances that they may make it part of their lives. An added bonus is when that exposure includes the opportunity for young people to see other young people having fun making music.

Such an opportunity is available Saturday morning, when, as part of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Classically Kids Concert Series (aimed at ages 7 to 12), young musicians from the area will take the stage in a program that will explore styles and instruments from around the world.

Performers include the Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestra, led by Jason Love; Peabody Sinfonietta (the youth orchestra of Peabody Preparatory), led by Harlan D. Parker; and Peabody Dance, led by Carol Bartlett. Works by Beethoven, Dvorak, Debussy and Copland are scheduled, along with such exotica as Yuzo Toyama's Rhapsody on Folk Songs of Okinawa.

The concert is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral St. For tickets, call 410-783-8000 or go to bsomusic.org.
