On-Demand Fans of "The Wire" Will Have to Wait for Finale

The WireThe 90-minute finale of HBO's The Wire won't be available in advance of the March 9 cable channel premiere date, a spokesman for HBO said.

Unlike the way in which the previous nine episodes this season could be seen On Demand starting the Monday before each Sunday airdate, viewers will have to wait to until 9 p.m. March 9 to see how it all ends with the Baltimore-based drama after five seasons.

HBO says the move is being made so that On Demand viewers don't "spoil" the pleasure of those fans who plan to wait until the Sunday-night HBO cablecast.

And you have to admit there was no shortage of On Demand fans -- folks who are quick to pledge their undying love of the series and sense of community with other viewers -- who went online after the death of a certain larger than life villain in episode 8 and blabbed it all over the place.

Thanks for the update Sun. However....stiiiiiiiiiiilll waiting for that response piece I asked you all to do on why this season the Wire's caricature of the news industry is wrong. In Omar style, David Simon is calling you out to the streets my friends. He's calling you guys punks. Actually, since most of you writers are probably like Gus, hardworking journalists who don't want to have to do "more with less", he's calling your bosses out.

He's calling your bosses corporate profit driven hacks. He's saying they hold you guys back from doing real journalism, keep you from spending time and money on important stories in place of stories that might win the prize, or win the readers with sensationalist garbage, instead of in-depth important, hard hitting pieces examining the true, complicated problems of our society.

Basically, he's saying your role is crucial to the game, and that by making your paper focus on profits instead of just doing good journalism, your bosses and owners and shareholders play a large part in letting cities and it's people suffer and die.

So, what so you all? C'mon...there have to be a few of you Sun writers who read the comments here and are thinkin...boy, I'd love to write something about how the profit motive sucks the life and energy out of me, or how my boss makes us focus on bs some days...or maybe you want to refute all this and say everything is fine and well.

Either way, can't say I'm going to be very interested in ever reading the Sun once the Wire's done if you all make no attempt at all to address these claims made by one the most critically acclaimed shows of all time.

I AM A LITTLE BEHIND ON THIS SHOW ( THE WIRE ) HOW MANY EPISODES OF THIS SEASON HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO DATE

BEST WISHES, EDWARD

From David Zurawik ...
In answer to Edward's question about the number of episodes shown to date...

Eight of 10 have been shown.

Episode 9 will premiere on HBO Sunday (March 2). It is available now On Demand.

Episode 10 of Season 5 (the series finale) will premiere on HBO March 9. There will be no advance showing On Demand.

Hope that answers your question.

Why are you such a jerk? The Sun's (an yours imparticular) coverage, or actually non-coverage, of Season 5 of The Wire has caused me to lose all respect for you - despite David Simon saying that you are a good man and just doing your job.

You have been so petty and it is horrible that you refused to address the subject matter that makes The Wire so important - not just the most entertaining show on television. Instead you acted like a little school girl, going "na-na-na-na-na" over ratings and now this latest jab at the fans of the show.

You are a joke.

and BTW - The Omar leak came out way before the show even showed up On Demand. So you are wrong there too.

tool.

Hey im a fan from the uk , i started the watching the wire about 2 months ago and when i seen the first episode iv'e been like "Bubs" needing my fix each day. I never heared about Omar until i seen it today, and i was well shocked...How can spiderman die? i've just finished watching episode 9 but wont comment as it airing in march. Anyway back to my Jamesons

I can't speak for anyone else, and I don't know who is a "tool" and who isn't, but there's no question that I was able to avoid all spoilers about Omar's death quite easily before episode 8 showed up OnDemand. Once that happened there was nothing I could do to not know who got it before I saw the show, poor [schmo] that I am with DirecTV and no OnDemand. I couldn't even avoiding knowing who gave it to him.

So I, for one, am thrilled with HBO's decision to not let anyone spoil the finale for me.

False advertising by HBO. They should give us a week refund.

Zurawick knows whats up, I saw every facebook group and chatfourm about The Wire light up like a christmas tree talking about Omar's death.. this is a good move by HBO

At your end of your article - calling Mr. Little's death "the death of a certain larger than life villain" is a matter of opinion and point of view. In my eyes, he was not a villain. Larger than life "character" would have been more appropriate. Interesting how this season has focused on certain shady actions and incompetence behind the scene at The Baltimore Sun - y'all call him a villain, and yet your article includes no substance to back up that claim. I'm just wondering - has the writer of this piece David Zurawik actually watched all 5 seasons?

First and for most The Wire is and was a really good series, but you dont kill a main character like Omar who is so influencial in working to get Marloe, to have him get shot by some little runner boy who is a about 8 or 9 years old, that [...] was really weak and i dont think i will watch the final becasue episode 58 ruined it for me....

The Wire is one of those series that make you want more!! The creator of this series is a GENIUS!! Play do not let it end on March 9th!! Great work, one of the best shows of all time in my opinion!! I will buy the dvd!

Great work!!

Anthony (the #1 fan)
