Steve Rouse is moving on
Steve Rouse, for more than 20 years the morning-radio voice for thousands of Baltimore-area listeners, has refused a pay cut at WLIF-FM (101.9) and is off the air.
He said he turned down a contract offer from CBS radio, which operates WLIF and four other Baltimore stations, that included a "pretty major" pay cut. Rouse said he and station management were in negotiations as late as this week but were unable to reach an agreement.
"This was my decision," Rouse stressed.
Rouse announced his departure at the end of his show Thursday but said he was half-expecting a last-minute reprieve. "I was actually almost expecting a call yesterday afternoon, saying, 'Steve, let's talk about this.' But it never came."
Program Director Greg Carpenter announced Rouse's departure in a short e-mail sent to staff this afternoon. "We are losing a great guy," the memo said.
Dave Labrozzi, vice president of programming for CBS in Baltimore, sounded like a man not ready to totally sever ties, noting that Rouse remains under contract through 2007. "He has until the end of this year to decide what he wants to do," Labrozzi said.
Rouse came to Baltimore in 1985 as a DJ at WERQ-FM (92.3). For more than 15 years, he was a fixture at WQSR-FM (102.7), where his Rouse & Company morning show was entrenched for much of the time as the top-rated program in that time slot. He left WQSR in 2005, when it stopped using DJs. He spent about a year doing fill-in work at WBAL-AM (1090) before resurfacing as the voice of WLIF's morning programming in September 2006.
For the third quarter of 2007, radio ratings from the Arbitron agency showed WLIF's morning programming ranked fifth among Baltimore stations in listeners 12 and older, with an average of 148,200 every quarter-hour. The region's top-rated morning program, on WPOC-FM (93.1), averaged 246,400 listeners.
Rouse said he planned to continue with his Saturday evening television show on WMAR, Channel 2, and doing voiceover work. As for radio, "I'm talking with a couple other stations," he said.

Comments
Someone needs to wake up and smell the roses! Rouse is good company and great to wake up to in the morn! He is not dull by any means and always has a quick comeback. Why doesn't the upper brass share the pay cut and let Rouse continue doing his Wonderful job!
When he was with WQSR, the morning show was always at the top and WITH was climbing as listners found out where he was! What a world! The emptiness in the morn with only make the listners move on to other stations and I WILL BE ONE!

I did not mean WITH, I should have typed WLIF Sorry! Slip of the fingers and mind!

Again! Steve Rouse has disappeared from my morning radio and I am livid! I used to wake up to his wonderful humor with Rouse and Company, then POOF! He was gone. Then he surfaced on WLIF and I was thrilled. POOF! He's gone again. This man is worth whatever it takes to keep him on the air. In addition, perhaps the morning rating problem isn't with Steve. Maybe it's with WLIF itself, which plays the same songs over and over. I could set my watch by some of the songs.

Here we go again! Some station managers just do not get it! I have listened to Steve Rouse for years now and always found him to be refreshingly entertaining and a great alternative to the "disturbed" shock jocks in the AM. Once again, a radio station manager has taken the best thing going and caused it to disappear. I, for one, will be changing my dial setting today -- and I will do what I did last time - wait for Steve to reappear so that I can reset my dial to the guy I want to hear. Quite frankly, your morning program - without Steve Rouse - STINKS! Signed, a former listner!

AMEN! Are you people at WLIF nuts! Until Steve returns, my radio is permanently tuned to The BAY. Mr. Rouse is the one and only reason I tuned to WLIF and then remained there the remainder of the day. And I trusted his advertising, too. I've gone with many of products/services (i.e., refinancing with BAMC over other lenders due to Steve's endorsement). He is a Baltimore icon and I know another, wiser station will see the opportunity and snatch him up. Also, the other comment was right - your playlist is pretty lame - but I stayed loyal for Steve. Mr. Steve - We Love You!

Steve we will folow where ever you go...Todays management can't seem to see the root of their problems. So they hide that and do somthing extra stupid.
Posted by: Ken | January 4, 2008 9:14 AM
I am very sorry to hear that Steve Rouse is no longer with WLIF. Hopefully another radio station in Baltimore will pick him up. I look forward to tuning in to him again when that happens.

I just removed WLIF from my Radio Station favorites - I will no longer be listening. Management is stupid - the new show is DULL with Steve. Goodbye.

When "Steve Rouse & Co." closed shop, I felt like someone who had been kicked out of my morning car pool. Then a radio miracle: Steve was back on the air. As charming as Greg and Diane are, they don't bring the smiles and chuckles that Steve reaps from listeners. What a shame! Hopefully a wiser Baltimore station will reintroduce Steve to early risers.
Posted by: Marie Visosky | January 4, 2008 4:47 PM
I hope he does find another station and all of us will listen to him there and they will realize they made a major mistake. We miss you and I hope some other station realizes you have loyal listeners.

Steve Rouse was the only reason to listen to WLIF. The programming has gotten boring, the same songs over and over. Steve made the day brighter with his wacky banter and jokes. We will be waiting for him to be back on the air.
Posted by: Gloria Byrd | January 4, 2008 11:15 PM
I am very upset that Steve Rouse is no longer on wlif. He brightened up my morning and gave me something to look forward to each day. I have been a big fan for many years and was so excited to see him resurface on wlif. I guess once again I will be changing the dial til I find him once again.

I agree with most of the others in this group. I too loved to listen to Rouse each morning and only tuned in to WLIF because he was on it. It doesn't appear I am in the minority - which means the radio station will suffer much more than Rouse - who I anticipate will be picked somewhere else soon.
Posted by: Barry | January 5, 2008 11:44 AM
I am very unhappy with the management I too will be tuned to another station.

This is truly another day the music has died in Baltimore. I listened to QSR before Steve and Linda and found in enjoyable. When Steve came with Mike, Tom, and then Maynard it was a winning combination for anyone who likes Oldies. They popped and kept you laughing and awake in the traffic. Even when Infinity tried to killed them with a limited playbook, we the faithful, continued to listen for the fun. Lite FM is truly what we joked about all those years, just fluff. I stopped listened to music in the morning the first time, and reluctantly went back to Steve because he is the best in the morning. When will they get it, or are they just waiting for all of the true fans to die?

I just switched my alarm to 106.5, which I used to listen to all the time until Steve Rouse came to WLIF. I agree with some of the comments that their format is dull, but with Steve it was worth listening to. He should have recieved a raise, but instead he was asked to take less money. I just don't get it. I hope he finds another station who appreciates his humor and talent. WLIF you blew it!

well it was goodbye to WLIF on my radio when you said goodbye to STEVE ROUSE.your management must be nuts !!!!
Posted by: Doug Constantine | January 7, 2008 6:53 AM
I just became a listener of WLIF over the last several months since I went back to work. I enjoyed the upbeat banter of Steve Rouse each morning and continued to listen on my daily trip into the office. I wasn't aware that Steve was gone permanently until today. As of tomorrow, I go back to listening to my former station. Greg is definitely not a morning-get you up and on your way-DJ. What a mistake you have made.
Posted by: Maggie Parker | January 7, 2008 7:51 AM
It's a very simple game no Rouse, no WLIF. And that's all I have to say on the matter!
Posted by: Jack | January 7, 2008 7:56 AM
I agree with all of the above. I always listened to Rouse & Company and was heart broken when they when off the air. When I heard he was on the air again I started listening to WLIF. I can't belive that another station could be so stupid to let him go again. Where ever Steve goes his fans will follow. To bad it's your loss.
Posted by: Pat Beyer | January 7, 2008 8:31 AM
I also agree with the others who enjoyed Steve Rouse in the morning. He brought smiles to our family every morning as we began our day and will miss him until he returns to the air. Steve is a household name in radio and will always be one. His partnership with Diane was superb as they came into our lives each and every morning. We looked forward to his morning joke on the way work and could our clock to it! _Success will come to the station where Steve resides. Good Luck, Steve!

I knew it was too good to be true that Steve Rouse was back on the radio. Steve was the whole reason I started listening to Lite FM in the first place. In the spring of last year, when I discovered that he was doing mornings on this station, I was so happy, and I couldn't wait to tune in. Now Steve is gone again, and it's back to Square 1, searching the net for news on where he might go next. I just hope another station picks him up soon; too bad CBS couldn't see what a treasure they had.
Posted by: Arlene | January 7, 2008 9:09 AM
Once again I will be surfing the dial until I can hear Steve Rouse in the morning. He made it so much easier to get up for work. We looked forward to his friendly voice talking about whatever was on everyone's mind. I feel he actually put me in a better frame of mind with his positive, humorous outlook on every day life. Will someone PLEASE bring him back? Our mornings will not be the same until then.
Posted by: run-around-sue | January 7, 2008 9:10 AM
When will you radio stations get it? We don't listen to the stations because of their dull, boring, repetative play lists. (That;s why we have mp3's)
We want to be entertained. We want to smile and laugh.
People like Steve Rouse do that.
(sigh)
Time to move on from WLIF to where ever Steve Rouse decides to pop up again.

I'm done with LIF also - good luck Steve - let us know where you end up - we'll be there!

Too bad for WLIF.
And Oh, by the way, WAY TOO MUCH XMAS music, too long, on WLIF !

They are losing a good guy, and many good listeners. I for one only listen to 101.9 because of Steve Rouse in the morning.
I too, will follow Steve Rouse wherever he goes. I followed him to 101.9 and now I will listen to whatever station he winds up on.
Posted by: Joyce King | January 7, 2008 1:53 PM
I cannot believe that Steve Rouse is gone again! The morning is not the same. Steve you will be missed. I hope to find you on another station soon.

OH MY GOSH!!
I wondered why Diane was alone of working with the traffic and back-up guys! And they never mentioned Steve (but I notice that Diane is using his Impossible Celebrity - what else is she stealing!?).
But GONE AGAIN?? What is wrong with the station bigshots - They play the same music over and over and over and over and expect us to listen to some lame DJs??
You've lost me for good - I'm off to Smooth Jazz 104.3.
Without Steve you're nothing but noise.
Posted by: Ruth | January 7, 2008 3:29 PM
Steve off the air again! I also have followed him for years and didn't know he was gone again until this morning. I thought maybe he was on vacation and nothing was said this morning. I had to go to the web to find out what happened! I too will no longer listen to 101.9 because the music is repeated over and over. I loved WQRS before it became JACK or whatever. Please will a classic rock station bring Steve back to the air?!!!!
Posted by: Tracey Eberhardt | January 7, 2008 4:16 PM
ditto.....Now to start changing channels again....When are YOU GUYS going to get it? If we just wanted to listen to nothing but music, we would play CD's. or 8 tracks!!
The DJ's are what we listen to and you guys have just let a Great One Go.

I was really upset when I turned on 101.9 and did not hear Steve on the radio, this morning, I thought he was on vacation for the holidays. I rushed into work to find out that he is not the air anymore.
I am truly dissapointed. I only listend to this station to hear Steve, now I will need find another station until Steve comes back on the air.

Steve Rouse was the only way I could endure nearly 7 weeks of constant, uninterrupted Christmas music. How far will management go to save some money without regard to the listeners it loses?
Until Steve returns to the air, I'm switching to the DC stations.

IT IS A SHAME THAT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT MONEY, NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO TAKE A PAY CUT WHEN OUR OWN GOVERNMENT TAKES SO MUCH AWAY FROM US. IT IS A SHAME THAT YOU CANNOT DO RIGHT BY STEVE, HE IS JUST THE BEST.
Posted by: BARBARA MILLER | January 8, 2008 7:49 AM
Well, I don't usually get attached to radio shows, but I have to join the others who will be switching their morning dial. Steve was a welcome alternative to the adolescent antics of some of the other morning D.J.'s on other stations. I guess it's going to be smooth jazz and traffic. Where can I get some adult humor with my music?
Posted by: Deb | January 8, 2008 8:40 AM
I was a diehard fan of Rouse & Co. and loved them all. Steve, Linda, Mike, Tom, and then Maynard were a winning combination for anyone who loved & needed laughter to help you stay awake in the morning. I was thrilled to find Rouse again, but disappointed that the group wasn't together. He is gone due to a pay cut based on low listeners. I think that has to do with the limited playbook that was offered & starting the Christmas music prior Thanksgiving! Greg Carpenter is a nice easy person to listen & was perfect for the afternoon BUT in the morning I need a jump start to get going.
Rouse gave his listeners that start. It's hard enought to get up each day so early, but Rouse made it easier. Now, I'm turning over and going back to sleeep, NOT GOOD! So now I have to find a new station and marketing people, that new station will not be a CBS station. Maybe I will need to switch markets and go to the DC stations. But I will end up where ever Rouse goes.

The only good thing left about WLIF now, is the flash back weekends. It reminds me of the old WQSR, which I surely miss. I'm leaving WLIF for good unless Steve comes back. My heart has been broken again by his departure. Give him what he deserves. What a treat it would be to have the old Rouse and Company back and in tact.
Posted by: Michelle | January 8, 2008 10:16 AM
WLIF is so foolish. The AM show's failed ratings are the result of lousy, repetitive song selection, not Steve Rouse. Rouse was the ONLY reason many of us turned to your station. I'll listen to NPR until Steve pops up somewhere else--NPR is not Rouse, but it's not boring programming or DJ's who are boring or dumb or coarse or just plain nasty. I can listen to whatever music I want in the morning. What I WANT is somebody who makes me laugh out loud--but doesn't gross me out. Rouse is the MASTER! (I still don't see how those other guys killed his other great show.) Rouse is smart, funny, quick, generous, and willing to make himself a part of the joke. Though not a native, he is so tuned in to Baltimore. I imagine the leading morning show in our area has a larger following among a younger crowd. That's fine--but the shallow and nasty demeanor of those DJ's does not appeal to those of us who are mature--NOT OLD--and still have plenty of buying power. And sorry, WLIF, but we won't settle for boring either. Big mistake. Huge.
Posted by: Gail | January 8, 2008 10:22 AM
Like so many morning radio listeners, I want to be entertained, And thats what Steve Rouse was all about. I was devasated when the Rouse and Company show on WQRS was canceled and so very happy to hear Steve back on the air @WLIF but there was too much, repeated music and not enough Steve. Perhaps if WLIF management would have let Steve have his old radio format, the WLIF morning show with Steve would have had higher ratings. Anyway, WLIF is no longer set on my radio buttons. I will search , once again for an entertaining morning show. Good luck Steve, please return to our radios!

I listened to Steve Rouse and Co. for years and was so sad when they left. I was really excited when I found Steve was on 101.9, now that he's gone, I'll no longer be listening. Steve, let us know where you'll be and I'll listen to that station.

There is no better way to drive to work in the morning than with Steve Rouse. I miss his upbeat banter. I miss the joke de jour. Will someone please bring Steve back to the airwaves?
Posted by: Carol | January 8, 2008 1:48 PM
I just found out today that Steve won't be back on; thought he was still vacationing or out sick. Looks like the powers that be have screwed up again. Infinity canceled WQSR without giving any warning at all leaving listeners scratching their heads and spinning radio dials looking for a replacement. Steve gave them a second chance by coming to WLIF which is a CBS stations as well as WQSR was. Listeners are in the same position again, as the selections are pretty slim. I get tired of hearing the same songs over and over; got tired of hearing Christmas songs for a month and now can't hear Steve. The other stations in Baltimore just don't offer what I'm looking for, either with their "personalities" or their music. Why don't the so called experts ask us what we want. But then again, they didn't pay attention when they had the highest rated show with WQSR, did they? You can go all over this country, turn the radio on and find an oldies station, everywhere EXCEPT Baltimore. Sad.
WLIF has lost me as a listener as well. Keep us posted Steve as to where you are; hopefully soon we will hear your voice in the a.m. once again.
Posted by: Jane | January 8, 2008 2:56 PM
Steve made it bearable to listen to Christmas songs for an entire month. When I think of the preparation Steve had to do everyday to keep his show fresh for the following day, it's remarkable. Yet Management expected him to take a pay cut? If anyone should take a pay cut, it should be the person with the bright idea of a month long Christmas format. I know Steve will be back on the air soon. He's way too good not to be. We'll follow you where ever you go, Steve.
Posted by: Chris | January 8, 2008 8:37 PM
Steve fans - Lets look at the bright side, maybe Steve will hook up with Christie or Linda, Maynard, Mike, and Tom again and we will really have a great morning show! Sometimes companies just look at dollars instead of looking at the customer! Avid Steve fan and follower.

Posted by: ray robinson | January 9, 2008 8:51 AM
Wow... I just thought Steve was sick on on a prolonged vacation! What a mistake WLIF has made letting Steve go. It was tolerable listening to the same songs over and over again only because Steve Rouse was constantly bringing in freshness in his morning routines. I've been listening to him since I was a kid in high school and was devistated when they yanked the DJ's off the air on WQSR. Once again I am left scratching my head now that he's off the air again. Sorry WLIF, but as of this email I am changing my listening station.
Posted by: Melissa | January 9, 2008 9:11 AM
I've listened to Steve Rouse for many years. He made getting ready for the day worthwhile. When they changed the format on WQSR and got rid of Steve, I stopped listening to the radio in the AM. Then I found him on WLIF and started listening again. You can count me in as another listener gone. When you resurface at another station, let us know where you are and I'll surely be a steady listener again
Posted by: Dee Streett | January 9, 2008 1:14 PM
I listened to WQSR for years and was heartbroken when they changed over to "Jack", no personality...then I found Steve on WLIF and while it was excruiating to hear how hard Diane was trying (usually not very well) to hide her intense jealousy and contempt of Steve, I stuck it out even though the programming there is boring. Someone please listen to the majority and get Steve on another local station pronto! My mornings just aren't the same. When is this city going to wake up and get a half way decent morning show on the radio again??!!
Posted by: Donna | January 9, 2008 2:25 PM
Awwww nuts! And WLIF you're nuts to let the uber-talented Steve Rouse go. I dumped WQSR and Jack and now WLIF. I'm shocked.
I hope Steve's mother makes you one of her tuna salad sandwiches.
In the meantime, Steve thanks for the long run and the short run - hope we get another long run

What a HUGE disappointment. I thought Steve was on an extended vacation. The new morning show is AWFUL. I also will be tuning to another station and hoping someone will have the sense to hire Steve. WLIF you blew it.
Posted by: Charlene | January 9, 2008 6:37 PM
I don't live in Baltimore, but drive there 2-3 times a week for my job. I have been listening to Steve for the 6 years I have had this job. Steve makes the drive bearable. I stoppped listening to WQSR and now I'll stop listening to WLIF. Steve, let us know where we all should tune in next.

I ALSO WILL BE CHANGING MY RADIO STATION. STEVE WILL SHOW UP SOMEWHERE, WE WILL FIND HIM
Posted by: Rick Gordon | January 9, 2008 7:43 PM
WLIF - Please reconsider doing what it takes to sign Steve Rouse. He and Diane and Frank had a chemistry that made your morning show so enjoyable. Steve is clever, witty, down-to-earth, professional and prepared. Whoever made the decision not to let him go is the one who should be leaving. Steve was an asset to your radio show. You will probably loose a great deal of advertising.

I can't believe OUR Steve is gone. I was really upset when I tuned in on 101.9 and did not hear his voice on the radio. I thought he was on vacation for the holidays. Looks like it's bah-bye to WLIF.

You can go anywhere else, turn the radio on and find an oldies station, anywhere except Baltimore. Steve is the perfect oldies rock DJ - and not that 101.9 crap that's played over and over again. Steve was the only reason I listened to WLIF but they've lost me as a listener. Keep us posted Steve as to where you are; hopefully soon we'll hear your voice once again. You are the only one that can wake me up and put me in a good mood in the a.m.

I, too, listened to Steve on QSR for years and enjoyed the talk and interactions on the Morning Show. I couldn't stand JACK so I moved on to WPOC. When Steve joined WLIF, I reset my radio buttons and began listening to Steve once again. His departure leaves me no other choice. I'm back to WPOC and listening to some other folks who also know how to keep an audience entertained with lively talk. WLIF has lost a good man and one of the mainstays in Baltimore. Hopefully, some other station will see this as the opportunity it is.

I am, once again, disappointed in a radio station management/decision. I will join the growing list of Steve Rouse fans and turn my dial to another radio station or on to my CD's. Diane, although nice, ain't cutting it. Sorry!! I agree with the comments on the play list also, repeat, repeat, repeat. Listen smart radio stations, pick up this radio personality and do us all a favor.

%*)*(&^&% NOT AGAIN!! No its back to scanning the raio the whole driving time to work. Thats all I did when he left QSR, and never found a station I liked until I heard him on 101.9. Not crazy about the music, but loved Rouse to wake me up !!

I couldn't believe it when Steve announced he was leaving. WLIF wanted to CUT his pay, and put that boring Greg on in the morning? REALLY WLIF? What is wrong with you and your managers? PLEASE, PLEASE, bring Steve back. Can I give you the extra money to bring him back? I would gladly pay whatever to be entertained by the "MASTER". Steve we all miss you. Wherever you go I'll be right there. BOO to WLIF and their management!!!!

Why is it that everytime Steve Rouse goes off the air, I have to Google to track him down again. Station managers --- quit shooting yourselves in the foot and hold on to him!
Posted by: Grace | January 10, 2008 8:26 PM
I only listened to WLIF because of Steve Rouse. I began to switch to other stations when Christmas music started prior to Thanksgiving. I'm sure lots of others did, too, which could account for the lower 4th quarter ratings. I don't like the music selection on WLIF, but I listened for Steve. Now,he's gone, and so am I.

I'm sure that Steve's pay cut was due to the poor ratings of the morning show but I really believe the poor ratings were because of the lack of chemistry between Steve and Diane Lynn. I have to say, I think that was Diane's fault. She never seemed to jell with Steve's humor, often stepping on his lines. Their relationship was awkward at best. I wish WLIF had kept Steve and asked Diane to move on.
Posted by: Chris | January 11, 2008 5:48 PM
Well, I've been wondering about the whereabouts of Steve, and now I know. I have been a loyal listener of 101.9 for over 10 years, ever since I relocated to Maryland, and was worried that when Steve joined, the show would be crass and without class. I WAS ABSOLUTELY WRONG! He turned out to be a CLASS ACT and my ray of sunshine throughout my crappy morning commute. I always and immediately tuned into Steve and Diane upon my arrival to work.
Steve, you are sorely missed. Diane Lyn doesn't even sound like herself. It is obvious that she misses you greatly, too!
The joy is gone, and I suppose I'll be moving on, now.
What a huge mistake that CBS has made, yet again.
CBS REALLY NEEDS TO START PAYING ATTENTION TO ITS FOLLOWERS!

Greg Carpent's name may be on Steve Rouse's old show, but he apparently can't even get out of bed in time to be on the air at 5 am! Slacker! It's back to WPOC for me, too!
But what about WSMJ? They don't seem to have ANY live DJs! Randy Dennis is gone. Lori Lewis is gone. All they have are recordings of "big name" artists piped in. I'm not impressed.

Well, you did it right this time!!! My radio is on OFF. I am now listening to CD's. Rouse was the ONLY reason I tuned into WLIF, prior to WQSR. Baltimore Radio Management is INSANE. You don't appreciate your breadwinners when you have them right there in your studio.
Former radio listner.

Does anyone know if he is going to another station? I will miss listening to Steve Rouse.

I as well as many others are saddened by not hearing Steve on our way to work as well as when we get there. Corporate America needs to wake up. When you've found a winner stick with it. I loved his stories, his quick whit and his amazing personality. WLIF has lost not only a host but Baltimore's wake up MAN. I miss you Steve and am waiting to hear where you go.
Posted by: martha childress | January 12, 2008 11:22 AM
Just about everything has been said. WLIF is off my radio dial. Even my wife has changed stations. If the management is so worried about how the morning show ranks with 12 year olds then hopefully their advertisers do too. But we (the 40 & up) are the ones who buy that "STUFF" so maybe you should look at what we want. We love Steve and we love the oldies. Where ever he goes so will my radio, and whoever hires Steve Please let him do his thing, that's why we listen.
Posted by: STEVE | January 12, 2008 2:02 PM
Without Steve, radio is not the same. When Steve left 105.7 I stopped listening. Now that he left 101.7 I again stopped listening. When Steve returns to radio I will listen to that radio station. What a talent to lose in the mornings.
Posted by: Chris | January 14, 2008 10:57 AM
You're low ratings were because of the constant Christmas music (way overdone); not Steve Rouse. You used to be a good station, but the overall programing is now lacking, and you play music very similar to 106.5 (for the younger croud; not good). I had tried to listen some after the Don Imus nonsense as it related to CBS, especially when Steve came on board; but it appears the Dave Labrozzi is at it again; screwing a good thing up. He's the one who should either receive a pay cut or be let go. He ruins everything he touches.

I am heartbroken, sick!!!!! How could this happen? I really like Diane, but I just can't listen w/o Steve!! Guess it's back to DC and Diamond in the morning!!!
Posted by: Cheryl Thompson | January 14, 2008 4:02 PM
I've been listening to my radio in the morning for the last 2 weeks since returning from the Christmas Holiday. I kept wondering where Steve Rouse was and when he was returning. Diane is fine, but that other guy, forget it. I thought he must be on an extended vacation, but now I read he is on a really extended vacation. What a mistake by the radio station and CBS Radio in particular. Well, I won't be listening to WLIF any more, and I think while I'm at it, I'll figure out the other stations owned by CBS and tune them out as well. You just lost my ear and any attention I might have paid to your advertising!!
Posted by: Bill Gallion | January 14, 2008 10:59 PM
I can't say anything more than what has already been said. No one should take a cut when they were the reason that station was surviving. I'm searching for a new station.

Add me to the list of ex-wlif morning listeners...I sure didn't listen to wlif for the music... Time to start playing my CD's on my morning commute and at work. Great move, wlif.

I've been in FL for the past 7 years, but stay tuned into the Baltimore radio news. I've been a Rouse & Co. fan from day 1. Steve hope you find something soon. Steve try Florida!
Posted by: Susan aka: | January 15, 2008 10:18 PM
Well, you just lost me as a listener today too !!! Its not about the music on a morning show. Its the personalities that make it what it is, and without aSteve you have NOTHING !!
Posted by: H.E.Harrison,Jr | January 16, 2008 11:40 AM
It is a shame that the Baltimore radio market may have lost one of its icons. I am sure it was due to a lack of revenue and ratings for the show. Since the FCC has allowed corporations to own multiple radio stations in one market, you will have stations within that corporation targeting a specific audience. Since Steve Rouse’s best chance for a larger audience was with WQSR, (oldies format), his best move would be to get hired at another oldies formatted radio station, say 100.3 WBIG, in Washington D.C. His name may appeal to that market, as well as pulling listeners from Baltimore. WLIF seems to be targeting a younger audience, since the music has changed to more artists like R.E.M., and Matchbox 20, just to name two.
If you have worked in, and followed radio like I have, you’ll see these changes. Radio is very cut throat. If you can’t bring in the audience, you will lose your job. I am glad I got out when I did. You also have to realize that Satellite radio is threatening every radio station out there. Ownerships like CBS and Clear Channel are lobbying the FCC to not approve the merger between XM and Sirius radio. Radio ownerships and stations are cutting costs at any expense. Personality radio is dying.

You finally had a great morning show with Steve Rouse and you blew it--once again your morning show stinks
obviously you need to fire who ever is running the show and making these random decisions because they have no clue what listeners want---get Steve back and pay him what he is worth--
no longer a listener

We need Steve R. back on Baltimore radio - pls. come back in the morning Steve - we miss you and need you back for our mornings! PLS. LISTEN MANAGEMENT OF CBS or whatever network will bring steve back to us in Baltimore - thank you!

WHAT ARE YOU NUTS? I'm a person that lives off humor, triva, and funcations in the morning, without coffee. It was nice to have all that in the AM to get me feeling good for the day. I would get to work ready to work with a smile which set the pace of the day. Now the pace is having to find another pick me up. Boreing is the word for the show now. I'm so out of your space!! I've got to get my grove back some where else. See ya!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe it. I will wait to hear Steve again and follow him wherever he goes. What is wrong with CBS radio? I have been in management for years and appreciate a great human asset when I have one. Steve should be rewarded for the great job he does. I looked forward to hearing him every morning on my drive to work. Fire your negotiators and reward this fine, talented personality.
Posted by: P Stepp | January 17, 2008 5:44 PM
Have you seen The Price is Right without Bob? There you go. Same thing. Your listeners is what make you stay on the air, listen to them.
And if you really want to be a success get Steve back and hook him up with Tom Davis. Suck it up and pay what you got to. You don't stay at the top for as long as they did by not being good. Fact is a fact, and you get what you pay for. Steve good luck and THANK YOU for all the laughs in the morning. I would pay to hear you on satillite also if you go that route.

Let's keep it "real". Baby Boomers ARE OLD! Don't believe everything you read in AARP! Our generation is on the way OUT! Just like our parents and their parents, Generation DUDE is the dominant generation that advertising and the music industry aims for, not us! YES Steve is a great DJ! YES, we all miss the days of WCAO - Johnny Dark, Kirby Scott and WITH - AM and WSID -AM (Baltimore's premier Soul Station along with WEBB. BUT wake up and smell the roses --- the young people don't want to hear about it....
It's another generation out there!
YES I'm over 55!

PAY THE MAN. He's worth his weight in gold. I'll follow him to a COUNTRY MUSIC station, fercryinoutloud! Buh-bye 101.9 "lite fm."

Does the manager who let Rouse go, listen to the radio? He/she must not, or they would know what a gem they let go. Like everyone else, I have already started spinning the dial looking for Steve on my half-hour daily commute.
I also have to agree, whose idea was it to play so much Christmas music? You need him back, the other are nice, but without Steve they can't hold the audience's attention. If you thought ratings were down, wait until the next one comes out!
Posted by: Shirley | January 22, 2008 1:46 PM
Here we go again. I was a loyal listener to 100.3 several years ago until they fired Murphy and Cash. Now, the same thing is happening at WLIF. Without Steve, WLIF ratings will fall into the basement. Diane does nothing to the show without Steve. Dave Carpenter hasn't go one funny bone in his body to help pull this show. I have no choice but to find another station to listen to. Goodbye WLIF!
Posted by: Ellen Moore | January 23, 2008 9:16 AM
Steve Rouse is gone and so is WLIF for me. Steve could make me laugh out loud in the mornings and no one can take his place. Can't wait until he turns up on another station which I will listen to everyday. What were they thinking? or not.
Posted by: Martha Brown | January 23, 2008 9:33 AM
I listened to WQSR only because of Steve Rouse. When he went off the air, I was so happy to find him on WLIF and I listened to that station only because of him. I will no longer listen, I will keep hunting around til I find Steve once again. When will you wake up and relize that Steve is an icon in Maryland?
Posted by: Mary Ellen | January 23, 2008 10:11 AM
GOOD BYE! I can finally return to listening to WLIF. Really, the station did us all a big favor! We were pretty tired of listening to all about him and Ms. Vickie...maybe now after a song is played, the artist will actually be announced! thank you , thank you , thank you!!!!

Like a lot of posters here, I thought Steve was just on vacation, like he usually does around the holidays. Then it dawned on me that there was not one mention of him on the air. So here we are again...the almighty dollar wins. I'm moving on also...probably to a news station. Just need the traffic reports and the weather anyhow. It'll be CD's in the car.
Posted by: Mike | January 26, 2008 4:37 AM
There's too many other stations to listen to everyone ! ! Forget about 101.9 & move on ! ! Hope Steve settles in with a " worthy " station that does not try to " STEAL " his services.
Posted by: Joe Gerst Business Broker & Commercial | January 27, 2008 11:34 PM
I'd love to see Steve go to Sirius radio with a morning show. Someone with half a brain needs to understand that his target demo isn't limited to the over-50 crowd; it's the morning commute/early risers who find an entertaining personality arguably more interesting to tune in to than whatever music you wanna play. (I'm braindead from 6 weeks of Christmas songs, 24/7, btw; goofy is as goofy does....)
Posted by: cheryl warner | January 28, 2008 6:03 AM
As you can see by all your listeners, Steve Rouse and Company were very popular, when they were drop by WQSR I never listen to the station again, that was the best morning show for us baby boomers around. I guess the radio people just don't get it. most stations are nothing but Rap and Crap, I refuse to listen to.
Posted by: tom owen | January 29, 2008 11:12 AM
Like so many others, I can only mirror their comments by saying goodbye to WLIF just like I did to WQSR when they gave him the boot. How stupid can you be. Steve, our ears are listening for the next station that is smart enough to pick you up.
Posted by: Beth Cicconetti | January 30, 2008 8:29 PM
Just because Steve Rouse has some rational conservative beliefs was no reason for CBS shallow thinking managers to throw away a ton of advertising dollars. It looks like some shallow thinking people who manage CBS radio need to be fired!

NOT A GOOD MORNING! I haven't had to get up early since i got back in town till today. WHAT do I find? Our Steve is gone! AGAIN
good-bye wlif, (sorry Diane)
I'll be waking to cd's till Steve is back in my day

I know I'm in the minority here....only 2 others share my opinion...I'M GLAD MR. EGO (aka Steve Rouse) IS GONE!!!! I listened to him years ago on WQSR but stopped when he began to get so full of himself. I was was not happy about him coming to WLIF. I worked with someone who knows him thru a mutual friend...the word I got was that Mr. R is VERY rude and arrogant...he perceives himself as some BIG STAR...oh please!!! And I agree with the comment about WLIF playing too many Xmas songs for waaaay too long.
Posted by: Marie | February 1, 2008 3:03 PM
I was a huge fan of Rouse and company but I did not listen long to the show with Diane on WLIF. I did not like the music play list and I thought Steve was just not himself, he seemed a bit opinionated and that was not like his normal silly self. So I turned it off and I am enjoying The Bay. However, I am sad to hear Steve has left the airwaves. I really think he needs the original Rouse and Company crew back and maybe they can find that old magic
Posted by: Lori | February 2, 2008 4:37 PM
Let's face it. I listen to Greg Carpenter and Thinks he doing a great Job. If all of you like Steve Rouse so much, PUT UP THE PAY CUT AND CONTINUE TO LISTEN TO HIS DRY HUMOR. I Love Diane, I feel she tolerated Steve and HIS Morning Show. It's not ALL ABOUT STEVE.
Posted by: Unknown Critic | February 3, 2008 1:15 AM
We switched to WLIF in the office only when we heard Steve Rouse would be on in the morning. We're now spinning the dial looking for another station. Someone in WLIF's management must've had some delusionary thoughts that the recent increase in WLIF's listeners was due to their personal management skills. -- DUH!!!
Posted by: Frank | February 4, 2008 7:59 AM
Hmmm....I left a comment last week but I suppose because it wasn't a "pro Steve Rouse" statement, it was not allowed to be posted...where's the fairness here??
Your comment from last week has been posted. They get published several at a time when a moderator approves them. Thanks.

Thank goodness. If only Steve Rouse would go away for good.
Posted by: Drew | February 4, 2008 1:19 PM
I also woke up 2 different times to hear that Steve was not on the air. I was quite upset. I guess I feel the same as all the others. I will have to listen to a different station as well until he hopefully reappears. I also thought Linda Sherman was a great colleague of his until one day I woke up and she was gone. They worked really well together. Perhaps the old crew could get together once again and make many of us smile : ) : ) as they did so many times in the past. Shame on you WLIF- it is like everything else. When you really like something, it seems to disappear!!!

Can't everyone just get along?
Posted by: Sam | February 11, 2008 8:25 AM
I listened to Steve Rouse for years and then the radio station dropped him. I then found him on 101.9 and started to listen to him in the morning again. Then again I noticed that he is gone. I no longer listen to Lite FM and now listen to the Bay 100.7 FM. The upper management need to stop letting good people go.
Posted by: John | February 13, 2008 10:30 AM
What has business management come too? Rouse was let go over a Salary cut, ratings be darned. I have yet figured out what motivates these people. WQSR had the highest ratings in the morning before they let Rouse and Company go. Now you can’t find them in the top 20. WLIF will realize the same thing. As soon as the ratings go down, so will the advertising dollars, what fools they all are! Isn’t the point to make money not save money. Did these people take business 101?
