Warner Brothers, but maybe not sisters......
According to Nikki Finke's Dateline: Hollywood website, Warner Bros. president of production Jeff Robinov has decreed that his studio will take on no more films anchored by female stars. Apparently, the disappointing box office of such recent films as The Invasion (starring Nicole Kidman) and The Brave One (Jodie Foster) has convinced him there's no future in such films; apparently, only men can be relied on to bring big box-office returns.
Where does one start to comment? One could mention Erin Brockovich and My Big Fat Greek Wedding as films that made a lot of money with a female headliner. One could mention that neither The Invasion nor The Brave One were very good -- which was the fault of their male writers and directors more than their stars. One could mention how ironic it is that this comes just days before Baltimore plays host to its inaugural Women's Film Festival. One could ask if Mr. Robinov realizes this is 2007, not 1907.
Or one could just hope that the guy was having a bad day, and will keep trying to release good movies, regardless of the sex of their stars.
