Pre-emptive strike on 'The Golden Compass'
The folks at the Catholic League for Civil Rights, who are never shy about attacking films they believe promote an anti-Catholic agenda, have November's release of The Golden Compass directly in their sights.
The film is based on a book by Philip Pullman, part of a trilogy known collectively as His Dark Materials. According to the New York-based league, the books were "written to promote atheism and denigrate Christianity, especially Roman Catholicism."
A press release from the organization, sent out last week, quotes Catholic League President Bill Donohue as saying the problem isn't so much the film, which is "based on the least offensive of the three books."
"It is clear," he adds, "that the producers are watering down the most despicable elements -- so as to make money and not anger Christians."
The real problem, he says, is that seeing the movie might prompt youngsters, or their parents, to read the books.
The Golden Compass stars 12-year-old Dakota Blue Richards as a young girl who tries to rescue her kidnapped friend from an alternative world, filled with witches and talking bears, where people's souls exist outside their bodies and manifest themselves as animals. Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Eva Green and Sam Elliott also star.

Comments
God forbid that a movie prompt anyone to read. It's Phillip Pullman, BTW.

I absolutely loved the Philip Pullman Dark Materials Trilogy. Excellent!

Father Jonathan Morris and Bill Donohue, Catholic League president, would prefer that children accept their religious brainwashing without doubt. I guess they don't much care for encouraging kids to think critically.

Who cares if it promotes atheism? Is it the end of the world if not everyone believes in God. I don't see anyone complaining about movies that promote religion.

When people fail to recognize the Absolute Truth of God and view everything as subjective - all ideas have equal value - The worthless and the worthy are treated the same. That dead end of reason leads to the open air sex and debauchery of of a San Francisco street fair.
Some things are indeed wrong and not matters of opinion - Accepting Truth sometimes makes life a little more complex, but is ultimately more rewarding then hedonistic atheism.

"Absolute Truth of God"
Hah!
Seriously, if that works for you, you're welcome to it.
I've done the religion thing. I didn't find any absolute truth there. Whining that I didn't try hard enough, or didn't try with a pure heart, or some other nonsense excuse, isn't going to help you much. I assure you I did, and if you don't believe me, then we're at an impasse. That's that.
I think you're mistaking the feeling of "I am absolutely sure that I am right about everything because I am so awesome" with "I have found absolute truth."
I am as sure that you're wrong as I am sure I live and breathe. That's fine, you can think what you think. But don't go around bloviating about your "Absolute Truth" unless you're ready to be ridiculed for your pomposity.
I humbly request that you take your imaginary friend and shove it.

There is a big problem here that no one is recognizing. There is a huge difference between religion and faith. I believe in God, I pray etc. but I don't go to church. I don't because from what I've seen in my limited time on earth is that religion convoludes the nature of faith. Religion has brought scandal after scandal to faith. Now, the reason that this is a huge problem is that Mr. Pullman doesn't recognize the difference. If he did, he would't be orchestrating the killing of God, rather, the church.

Yep, the corporations are pretty much going to prevent any controversial ideas about religion from getting into entertainment that needs a wide audience to make money. So we've got all kinds of children's entertainment that the Catholic League can approve because it doesn't "attack" Catholicism, or any other religion. Of course it can't promote any religion either. It just creates a world where religion is irrelevant.
That's much better, right? Right?
The Catholic League should already be noticing the benefits of corporate decisions to avoid offending anyone about religion, as more Americans each year report that they don't belong to any church, and don't have any particular religious belief.

Dear "Concerned",
He does both, and I assure you you're merely assuming a level of unsophistication on Mr. Pullman's part, and your assumption is unwarranted.
He does not conflate God with the Church at all, and you could have known this, and avoided making a fool of yourself, with a little research.
Rather than spoil the plot for you, I suggest you actually read the books before you assume you know how to accurately criticize them.

Wow, really? You haven't been looking too hard, then.
Not everyone will believe in God, and no it won't end the world, just those who don't believe's chances to thrive beyond it. You don't have to believe that, or anything else to do with God, but of course those who do are going to care, are you serious?

This is ridiculus:

Likley, this never will. However, for the sake of logic and intellegnce, I will write this anyways. After reading the uneducated and bizzare comments stated above, in this clearley anti faith website, that the more critical of Gods existance, the more arragont the person. It is not the movie which is being "attacked" it is the book, (which I have personaly read) which is entirley designed for the destruction of basic humanity which is our soul, and as a convert myself, I can say I would much rather read C.S.Lewis's extrodinary lititure and learn something, then Pullmans acid to society and pollitics. Read the books, tell your childrento read them when they are oldenough to make smart chioces, let them see the other side.
