If you have a free moment today, be sure to swing by the Charlestown Retirement Community for their 19th Annual Resident Visual Art Show & Sale. The show will include paintings, photographs, three-dimensional design, wood art and works on paper (charcoal, pastels, and collage). Jeff Getek, who helped promote the show, says, “Our residents are extremely talented, and many of them have been involved with art professionally through their careers.”

Take for example Cecilia Staub, who began teaching art in her home in 1960 (see her painting above). Still an active artist, Ms. Staub pursues her passion for art through her Catonsville-based family business, Staub Art Studio. According to Jeff, “Ms. Staub’s experience highlights the idea that the love of art is timeless and retirement is not an end to pursuing fresh interests, but a beginning.”

The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. today at the Charlestown Retirement Community Erickson Conference Center, located 719 Maiden Choice Lane in Catonsville. For more information, contact Jeff Getek at 410-456-9809.

Things to do tonight

yellowbubble_pcard_web.jpg woman-is-a-woman.jpg

Need something to do this Friday night? Stop by the Shine Collective in Hampden to meet local illustrator Elena Johnston. Her fashionable drawings celebrate unconventional beauty and charm and there’s just something refreshing about that. Elena also authored the book La La Land – “a collection of artists' work living in Baltimore derived from the dark, chaotic, comedic, and the fashionable.” Her latest book is called Paper Kingdom! A Collection of Baltimore Music Posters. The opening party is from 6-9 p.m. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Also don’t forget that this Friday is First Friday in Hampden, so all shops will be open late.

And wait! There’s something else! If Hampden is too close and you’d prefer a night away from the city, head into Delaware to attend the Bijou Handmade Market at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts in Wilmington (only about an hour and half drive). The show runs from 5-9 p.m. and will feature regional craft artists that are creating innovative handmade craft items. American Craft Council show and tell

CooperSquarehome.jpg
("Cooper Square," 17.25" x 16.25" by Nancy Nicholson)

The American Craft Council has announced its live demonstration schedule for the 33rd annual American Craft Council Show in Baltimore. Live demonstrations provide the unique, interactive opportunity for guests to learn and experience the world of craft with individuals considered to be experts in their area of interest.

The show is Feb. 27-March 1 at the Baltimore Convention Center.

A variety of dynamic demonstrations, presented by American Craft Council Show artists, local makers and arts and cultural institutions, take place throughout the weekend:

American Craft Council Show artist demo: Patricia Uchill Simons’ ceramic art pieces have slowly evolved over the years into funktional pottery including a camel toothbrush, walrus menorah and giraffe candlesticks. She will demonstrate the transformative process of turning soft clay cylinders into delightful animal sculptures.

Baltimore Clayworks, Maryland's only non-profit dedicated to the ceramic arts, will feature a group of their artists demonstrating a variety of clay techniques including Jamaican coiling, throwing faceting and slip decoration.

Etsy artist demo: Juliet Ames of the Broken Plate Pendant Company will demonstrate how to make jewelry from shards of antique plates.

Jed Dodds of the Creative Alliance at the Patterson and American Craft Council stained glass artist Nancy Nicholson will talk about Nancy's upcoming project in Baltimore -- the first city in her "Documenting Cities" series.

"In addition to adding another element of fun to the annual event, the live demonstrations also serve to further the Council’s mission to promote the understanding and appreciation of contemporary American craft," said Monica Hampton, Director of Education for the American Craft Council. "The opportunity for our guests to meet and talk with the artists has been a hallmark of the show since its inception. Art Star Craft Bazaar now accepting applications

ascb2008.jpg

Now in its sixth year, Philadelphia’s Art Star Craft Bazaar is considered one of the most cutting-edge craft fairs on the East Coast. It began in 2003 as a first-come, first-serve open air market where independent artists and crafters could sell their goods. It has since grown into an extension of the Art Star Gallery and Boutique, opened in 2004 by Erin Waxman and Megan Brewster. Last year the bazaar was host to more than 4,000 attendees.

This year, Art Star will feature 150 independent artists and crafters on May 30 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and May 31 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at Penn's Landing Great Plaza. It’s a juried show that welcomes all mediums of handmade, original work. Applications are available here. The submission deadline is April 1.

Vendors will get a 10x10 space, 2 chairs, one 6-foot-long table, and one weekend parking pass. Tents will be available to rent, as well as additional chairs and tables. Participants are required to bring everything else that is needed for set up and display. Up to two artists may share one space, but must apply together and both be accepted. Art organizations and collectives should apply as a group.

(P.S. The image above was designed by Julie West, and you can purchase a print of it here.)

Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewelry

I will be unable to upload images for the next few days. I wanted to tell you because frankly, the blog seems a little naked without pictures and I didn’t want you to think that I was skimping on content. It shouldn’t be too long before things are back to normal.

On another subject, have you heard about the current show at the Walters Art Museum? Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewelry opened on Oct. 19 and will run until Jan. 4. If you’re into vintage jewelry (or even if you’re not), this exhibition is a must see. It includes more than 200 highlights from the Walter’s stunning collection, which happens to be the most wide-ranging private collection of jewelry in the United States. The likes of Tiffany & Co., Rene Lalique and countless other pieces exemplify how the art of jewelry making has evolved throughout the ages.

Several events are happening in conjunction with the exhibit. This week, a workshop entitled Basic Sketching, Rendering & Jewelry Design will be offered on Wednesday from 6:30-9 p.m. The cost is $50 for members; $100 for non-members. On Thursday, the museum will host College Night: Bling! Bling! Bling! which is free to college/university students and faculty and includes a tour of Bedazzled as well as live music, refreshments and a student art exhibition. Pre-registration is recommended.

Bedazzled is a special ticketed exhibition. Tickets can be purchased at the museum or through Ticketmaster. Visit the Walters Art Museum web site for more details.

The Great Halloween Lantern Parade this weekend

*NOTE - Because of the rain, the Great Halloween Lantern Parade has been rescheduled to tomorrow, 10/26, at 7:30pm*

Of all the things I’ve told you not to miss this year, the Great Halloween Lantern Parade is something you absolutely have to experience, hands down. It is by far one of the most creative and inspiring events in Baltimore, and it only happens once a year.

There is no registration or fee required. Make your way to Patterson Park at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday and join in the procession with thousands of fellow Baltimoreans, including ghoulish stilt walkers, costumed jugglers and drummers. The trek across the park ends with a beautifully rendered performance of shadow puppets and live music.

Want to make your own lantern for the parade? There’s a great tutorial on Carina’s Craft Blog (just scroll down toward the bottom of the page).

The event will feature food, kids’ activities (like painting pumpkins), local artists, animal crafts, people crafts, a silent auction and adoptable animals. Gil Jawetz of buskerdog.com will be among the artists, as well as a few pet photographers. The silent auction will include a painting done by a monkey.

If you have a furry friend who likes to strut his/her stuff, consider signing up for the BARCStoberfest Dog Walk, which will raise money for rescued shelter animals. And while you’re there, stop by the Howl-O-Ween Pet Costume Contest in the Canton Dog Park. Participants in the contest – which includes Most Baltimorean, Matching Dog & Human, Most Original, and Best Last Minute – may sign up between 11am-1pm.

Visit the Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter web site for more information about sponsorships and directions.

Matthew Rice at Darker Than Blue Cafe

Darker Than Blue Café is hosting an exhibit of works by artist Matthew Rice. Born and raised in Baltimore, Rice's paintings are inspired by his own personal vision. He says, “My art reflects me with no outside influences. My favorite artist’s work is seen everywhere and in everything. The artist is God. Check the sky out daily. It is an ongoing canvas that changes every day. Like the oil paint that I love, God continues to add new layers to me, making me better with each stroke.”

Darker Than Blue Café is located at 3034 Greenmount Ave. For hours and directions, visit their web site. To read more about Matthew’s work visit www.mateoblu.com.

Let's get some shoes

MICA_JShoes_Invite.jpg MICA_Fibers_Students-1.JPG

A curious contest is currently taking place within the walls of MICA’s Fibers Department …

Three weeks ago, MICA fibers students were approached by J SHOES and asked the following question: 'Could a contemporary shoe be transformed into an entirely different object with an entirely different purpose?'

Students chose from boxes of “half pair” shoes that were leftover from J SHOES’ collection of design phase samples and set out to make something creative and functional.

The resulting designs will be unveiled this evening at 5:30 p.m. in MICA’s Rosenberg Gallery. Three winners will be chosen by a panel of top judges: the MICA Fibers Department chair, Style Magazine Baltimore editor, US J SHOES marketing manager and J SHOES representatives. The "shoes" will remain on display through Oct. 15th.

Try your hand at clay

Baltimore Clayworks recently released its Fall 2008 class and workshop schedule. You don’t need any prior experience with clay to participate – just a willingness to experiment and maybe get a little messy.

Clayworks instructors are leading classes for children, adults and seniors on a range of topics: handmade picture frames, miniature mosaic portraits, animal sculptures, instruments and porcelain dolls are among the many incredible things you could learn to create.

Community classes will be held at the Pimlico Road Arts and Community Center and they vary in cost from $5-$50. Clayworks is also offering a series of free hand-on workshops for youth and adults (space is limited and reservations are required).

And if you aren’t interested in taking a class, you must visit their gallery and shop in Mt. Washington. For more information or to register, visit the Baltimore Clayworks web site.
