Mollie Sugden, of 'Are You Being Served?' fame, dies at 86

It may not register on the global scale as Michael Jackson's death, but the passing of Mollie Sugden today will leave a much deeper mark on a lot of us, and, as she would say, I am unanimous in that.

Miss Sudgen endeared herself TV audiences as Mrs. Slocombe, the head of Ladies' Intimate Apparel on the long-running Brit com, Are You Being Served?, a show that gained its American following thanks to endless reruns on a lot of PBS stations for many years. I can never go too long without watching an episode for the millionth time. (Hey, I can't devote myself entirely to classical music.)

Everything about Mollie Sugden's Mrs. Slocombe was ...

compelling, from the ever-changing color of her hair to her giggles and tantrums and, of course, her startling lines about her "pussy". She was simply fabulous. I found this tribute on YouTube, which gives you a taste of this terribly talented woman and the affection she so easily generated:

_AYBS?_ is one of my absolute favourite shows, and I was always _especially_ fond of this wonderful lady. (Who can forget "Betty" dressed up in '70s chic and trying to act like a club girl, or snuggling up to Mr. Humphreys when she thinks he's proposed to her, or playing crime-family-matron "Ma Gumby," or passing out after she eats the bacteria-plagued merengues, or knocking Jackie Pallo to the canvas in "The Hero" -- so many magnificent memories!!! Mollie, you were a one-of-a-kind winner, and I'll always love you for being the "unanimous" Mrs. Slocombe. We'll never forget you!

Your stroll down the Mrs. Slocombe Memory Lane is much the same as ours. We watched the food poisoning episode last night in tribute; Ma Gumby will be next. What a fabulous comic actress. TIM

By, jove! I needed that.

Thanks for paying tribute to this very special lady.

She was special, indeed. And how depressing it is to note the passing of yet another member of the 'Being Served' cast. TIM

This is stunning news.. and thank you so much for giving her a dignified and deserving tribute. It's a shame that her passing will be eclipsed by others.

Thanks for the comments. In our house, it has been nonstop Mollie on the DVD these past few days, the perfect escape from the insane Jackson frenzy. Her artistry and sheer charm are timeless. TIM

We were lucky enough to have Mollie celebrate her 80th birthday at the Iowa Public TV studio during the "broad"cast of the Festival fundraiser. What a treat. What a neat person. I have the video collection of AYBS, thank goodness, so Mollie will always be just a flip of the switch away. RIP Mollie.

Thanks for your comments. I, too, am glad to have the 'Being Served' collection at the ready. Along with 'I Love Lucy,' it's a series I never tire of, especially because of Mollie. TIM

How very sad indeed to see the passing of yet another member of the "Are You Being Served?" cast. This is one of my favorite shows and I just love all the characters, especially Mrs. Slocombe.

She will be greatly missed!

With Wendy Richard going so recently, and dear John Inman not long ago, this really is a sad time for fans of that show. TIM

I just saw this on the web. What a flood of losses in late June and early July. This does hurt me more than the other recent ones, even if it will be generally under the radar.

AYBS has its devoted followers, of which I am one. Mr Humphries, and now Mrs. Slocombe. Oh.

And poor Miss Brahms, too. Very sad. TIM

RIP Mollie Sugden. I was actually watching one of the AYBS series DVD's the night Mollie Sugden passed away. I'm glad I own the complete series DVD's. I was laughing at your sarcasm in one of your lines, "Oh, the things you see when you don't have a gun." I never get tired of watching these DVD's and will watch another one after I post this comment in rememberance.

I can never get tired of those shows, either. TIM

I think that, looking back on her work, Mollie Sugden was probably one of the most hilarious women ever on television. I truly believe that Mrs. Slocombe should be considered an icon of television, right up there with Lucy Ricardo, Maude Findlay and Roseanne Connor as women ahead of their time.

If I ever get to heaven I know Grace Brothers will be open for business

I'd like to think the first line heard in the afterlife will be, 'Are you free?' Thanks for commenting. TIM

...leave a much deeper mark on a lot of us...

Our thoughts exactly upon hearing the news.

The German Week dance, and her fondness for a tipple.
Remember when she had the gin in her perfume atomizer for her cold?

She did an appearance on the 1st season of Little Britain as herself that was quite funny.

Thanks for commenting and for alerting me to the Little Britain appearance, which I hadn't known about. So many memories of a really funny lady. TIM

I am so sad to learn this news. She was one of my favorite television performers of all time. Her character Mrs.Slocombe will live on forever and now she is with John Inman and Wendy Richard in Heaven. God bless her always. Thank you.

Thanks so much for commenting. She's right up there on my favorite list, too, right along with Lucy and Vivian. TIM

being british you sometimes have reasons not to be proud but when you think of ms sugden et al you remember that sometimes being british is a great thing i watched aybs from day one and it always suprised me and delighted me with the passing of ms sugden another light in the firmament as gone god bless you mollie and in the immortal words of little britain i wish i was mollie sugdens bridesmaid xxxx

Thanks for commenting. (And, from this Yank's perspective, I'd say there's a great deal for the British to be proud of.) TIM

Oh....not, "Sexy Knickers." Love ya!

Thanks a lot, Tim!

You're most welcome. And, as Mrs. Slocombe would say, thanks for your custom, Madam. TIM

Just found your lovely tribute while Googling to learn more about her passing. Very well said, sir. I couldn't agree more that this saddens me much more than the passing of the "King of Pop." Are You Being Served? is on New Hampshire Public TV tonight, and I will take a little extra time tonight to remember her and wish her well. Hope that Mrs. Slocombe and Mr. Humphries are dancing in heaven, and that Mrs. Slocombe and Miss Brahms are gossiping behind the counter there as well.

I can easily imagine your celestial scenario. Thanks for the comments, and I am unanimous in that. TIM

I loved this lady in the show that I have personally watched 8 times. The whole series of AYBS? She was the best, and now I will watch with a deeper sense of saddness.

Rest in Peace Molly. God Bless you for making me laugh. No easy task.

Thanks for commenting. One comfort: Mrs. Slocombe will be prompting hearty laughs for generations to come.TIM

Mollie will always be in our hearts. My love and prayers go out to the Sugden family.

God Bless!!!!

I just heard about the passing of Mrs. Slocombe. I'm very sadden to hear that such a "great lady of comedy" is no longer with this. This too saddened me much, much more than the passing of Michael Jackson. Heaven must be now be a place of much laughter with her, Miss Brahms and Mr. Humphries there!

I'm sure they're being very well served up there. TIM

I was so saddened to learn of Molly Sugden's passing! We, in this household will miss her dearly! We watched AYBS everytime it came on PBS and couldn't wait for the next show. Thank you for the fun and laughter Molly gave to us. Of course, we also love the rest of the crew, they were all hilarious!!We miss you all.

Very nice tribute! I love to watch AYBS?. My grandfather watched 3 things on TV - Golf, Lawrence Welk and AYBS? He had a very distinct "cackle" when he laughed - when I heard it, I knew he was watching AYBS and I would join him. This is one of my fondest memories. Sad to see them go. RIP Mollie!

Thanks for your comments. TIM

I enjoyed your tribute to Mollie very much. I own the complete DVD set of AYBS, and watch it often. I never get tired of watching these episodes. Rest in peace Mollie!

Thanks a lot. I'll never get tired of those shows, either. TIM

Fiiiiinally, something worthwhile recommended by this boring critic. One tires of Schumann and Brahms. Slocum will endure.

I'll bet that whenever you read aloud from one of my brilliant reviews, it makes the hair on your pussy stand on end. TS

R.I.P. Mollie, you were a one of a kind! You will be sorely missed.

About Tim Smith
I was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up there. Initial thoughts of becoming a cocktail pianist faded when I realized I hated taking requests. I decided to study music history instead, and got a B. A. in that field from Eisenhower College in Seneca Falls, New York, and an M.A. from Occidental College in Los Angeles. After free-lance gigs for the Washington Star and the Washington Post, I worked as classical music critic for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel during the 1980s and '90s, a period when I also ventured into radio, contributing to NPR and hosting a weekly show on a West Palm Beach station. Since April 2000, I've been classical music critic at the Baltimore Sun. Over the years, I've written occasional articles for the New York Times, BBC Music Magazine and other publications, and I'm a longtime, regular contributor to Opera News and the U.K. magazine Opera. You may still be able to find on the remainder racks my one and only book, The NPR Curious Listener's Guide to Classical Music (Perigee, 2002).
