Freebie Friday book giveaway: The Emperor of All Maladies

the emperor of all maladies

Congratulations to Andy Flacks, the winner of last week's book giveaway: "The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey" by Walter Mosley. Enjoy, Andy

This week, we're turning to a non-fiction "biography" of cancer: "The Emperor of All Maladies" by Siddhartha Mukherjee.

The book has received solid reviews. The New York Times called it "powerful and ambitious." The Wall Street Journal said it was "well worth wading into, not least for its encompassing view of the science, philanthropy and politics that have defined the modern war on cancer."

To enter for a chance to win, leave a comment about what your reqading, and answer this question: Do you plan to give any books or other book-related gifts this year for the holidays?

I'm thinking about picking up these fun Penguin book cover postcards for someone on my list: http://www.amazon.com/Postcards-Penguin-Hundred-Book-Covers/dp/0141044667

I've heard a lot about this book & am really interested in reading it. I'm between books at the moment, but the last one I read was White Oleander. I'm sure there will be a book or two on my gift list...but I haven't made it yet!

i am finishing up "The Accidental Billionaires." I could never seem to find the time to get to the movies to see the film, so online shopping assisted me in getting the book. I go through my library to see what is Goodwill appropriate. Exchanging a reading list with family usually works in finding out the good reads I don't always hear about otherwise

I just finished reading the "girl with the dragon tattoo" series, which was awesome.

My husband and I just got an iPad, so I will probably be gifting him with electronic books this season.

Heard Terry Gross interview this author and it was fascinating!

I am currently reading Annie Dunne which I am enjoying.

I always give books at the holidays. Here is my big secret; don't tell anyone. I get beautiful brand new books at the annual Enoch Pratt library sale. Its amazing!

Cancer has changed so much in my lifetime. This book sounds interesting. Well, I'm still re-reading War of the Worlds. I need the diversion with the approaching holiday busyness. This week I went to B&N to purchase books as gifts for younger family members. I try to get there before the holiday crunch starts and the spines are broken and pages smudged. I also saw several titles that I'll be searching out at the library for myself.

This week I lost a friend to cancer and I learned another friend had cancer reappear.. So I am interested in this book.

Do you plan to give any books or other book-related gifts this year for the holidays? You are kidding, right? In my house everyone gets at least one book from me. It's a given when Mom is a librarian.

I am currently reading Apolo Ohno's (autographed!) biography before wrapping it up for one of my sons. It's not just about skating (or even dancing on DWTS)--it's about the training and discipline that helped him overcome great odds. Some good lessons there.

Definitely plan to include books for the book lovers on my gift list this holiday season, as always. My grandson (age 2) receives lots of books as gifts from me throughout the year, and Christmas will be no exception. As for what I am currently reading--I'm finishing up Little Bee.
As a nurse practitioner, I would find the Emperor an interesting read I'm sure!

I heard an interview with the author of this book and put it on my Christmas list immediately. I work in pathology so deal with cancer diagnoses every day, and I lost my brother to pancreatic cancer this year. I've already purchased several author-signed books for Christmas gifts this year and am currently reading Kings of the Earth by Jon Clinch, one of the authors I heard at a local book festival.

I am also interested in this book for a personal reason. I have MGUS(Monoclonal Gammonopathy of An Uncertain Origin). A percentage of people with MGUS get Multiple Myleoma (a rare bone marrow disorder). I am being monitored every three months for that with blood test.

Currently, I am reading a light and breezy book, 'Simply Irresistable'. I just finished reading a few very serious books so I needed a break.

I am planning on mailing some books to my friends and relatives, not sure which ones yet.

I'm currently reading The Other Brain by R. Douglas Fields (NIH). As always, books will be my gifts as "it is cheaper to buy somebody a book than it is to buy them the whole world."

I'm reading "QBQ, The Question Before the Question" today, and several other books having to do with "changing your own mindset". It's not so easy.

I have a few friends across the US that I converse with by phone from time to time. We also exchange books and magazine articles. I like to give gifts of books (and magazine subscriptions) that I know would be of interest.

Cancer is of special interest to me since I spent much time researching recent developments and alternative healing approaches for my late wife and brother.

I will read this book heard good things about it!

Just finishing up People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks.
Bought Little Bee for my Nook...what did you think of it, Cathy?
Buying books, magazine subs, crossword puzzle books, and a Nook for family and friends this Christmas.

Andy Flacks well deserved to win the book last week, because he pointed out that National Lampoon's "Christmas Vacation" is the best Christmas movie EVER. Way to go, Andy!

I'm reading "Murder on Bank Street" (Gaslight Mystery, set in the New York City area) by Victoria Thompson.

I'm buying my younger nephews and nieces books for Christmas. I'm getting help in my gift selection from THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW this year. See "Best Illustrated Children’s Books of 2010" at http://events.nytimes.com/gift-guide/holiday-2010/best-illustrated-childrens-books-2010/list.html

Still working on Keith Richard's Life. The common theme of each of his anecdotes is that getting caught is the mistake.

My son and I always exchange books. This year I'm looking at Geek Dad: Awesomely Geeky Projects for Dads and Kids to Share The Grands always get books, too, although the children of the librarian daughter-in-law are tough to buy books for.

I'm currently reading The Age of Innocence (Wharton), Yes Means Yes (eds. Friedman and Valenti) and The Lovely Bones (Sebold).

I'm definitely going to be gifting books this year, as I do every year!

Presently reading Nora Ephron's I Remember Nothing: And Other Reflections. Always give books for the holidays... in fact, already wrapped them!

I just finished reading "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson. It was fantastic.

I doubt I'll give any books as gifts for the holidays -- but I will give gift cards to book stores!
