Burlesque movie reviews
The reviews are in for "Burlesque," starring Cher and Christina Aguilera, and it provides a twist from our standard Friday book-to-movie adaptation posts. A glossy, picture-rich book accompanies the movie -- and if early reviews are any guide, it might wind up in the remainder bin rather quickly. Then again, star power of the two leading ladies could generate some box office power. Here are exceprts from some reviews:
Tribune newspapers -- Writer-director Steven Antin may have a heart as big as Iowa and California put together but he's not much of a filmmaker. The perpetually unsteady camerawork (a choice, but a bad one), the suffocating claustrophobia induced by the preponderance of "Chicago"-inspired club interiors, the high-fructose corn syrup disguised as dialogue: It's a lot to overcome, which is where a movie musical's musical numbers usually come in.
San Francisco Chronicle -- "Burlesque" is irresistible from its first minutes, and over time it creates a whole atmosphere, not only onscreen but within the audience. It's big, perfectly cast and entertaining in every way, but more than that it feels like a generous public event. See it with other people. See it with a crowd.
N.Y. Times -- Given that she spends much of the movie onstage, singing and dancing in what is essentially a succession of music videos linked with backstage filler, Ms. Aguilera doesn’t have much time to embarrass herself. She’s a serviceable screen presence who has a voice and an occasional song (Etta James’s “Tough Lover”) big enough to keep her from sliding off screen.

Burlesque definitely one of the best directed movies I've seen in a long time. Very entertaining for a story as old as the hills. The director obviously showed respect for his audience, his actors and the story itself. A very postive piece of work in these negative times in America. Loved it, and will see it again!

Finding myself with little to do on this dreary Thanksgiving day (it was rainy and cold where I live) I said yes when some friends asked me to see a movie with them. I will admit I had no idea this movie existed so imagine my surprise when I found out Christina Aguilera was acting in a movie.
To me Burlesque was Coyote Ugly meets Chicago with a pinch of Moulin Rouge thrown in for flavor. With that said, it was quite entertaining and the music numbers and soundtrack were above average but, I would have expected no less from a movie starring Cher and Christina. After seeing her in action for the first time I think Christina Aguilera can definitely add acting to her list of talents as her performance was far from amateur. In conclusion, it was well worth the watch and I look forward to seeing Christina in future movie roles.

Burlesque is a feast for the eyes, the ears, and the heart! The film is well edited and the fast close up angles and dazzling production numbers are mezmerizing. Christina Aguilera is more than a voice; she is also an actress and a dancer. Cer's big solo is the best thing she has sung in many years. Some critics are giving this movie an unfair shake. Go see it now.

I adore this film! Anytime you put Cher and CHristina in the same place, you will not be disappointed. Cam had a little to do with it too, he is beautiful! I was singing and dancing all the way out of the theater! Loved it!
