On Koran burning and the Dove World Outreach Center's
You all know how I feel about burning (or banning) books -- about the same as tossing puppies off a bridge -- and that's just one of the reasons I cringe at the move by the Dove World Outreach Center to sponsor a Koran-burning on September 11.
The whole publicity stunt has a bizarre "1984" feel to it. The Florida church uses an image of a white dove, but it's stance toward Islam seems anything but peaceful. It questions whether Mohammad even existed, saying there is "no conclusive account about what he said or did," while basing its absolutist faith on "the truth of the Bible." And even as the church calls for burning religious books, it describes the event as a symbol of freedom of speech.
Ironically, the planned event falls in the same month that the American Library Association sponsors Banned Books Week to highlight the issue nationwide. Many classics, including "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Catcher in the Rye," have faced removal from library bookshelves in the United States within the past year. During Banned Books Week, Sept. 25 – Oct. 2, participants will read from banned or challenged books and will discuss the impact censorship has on civil liberties, the association says.

Comments
A society must abandon basic decencies in order to muster the immoral courage to burn books as a celebratory act.

This proves once again there are radicals and idiots (God calls them fools) all across the globe, including hiding in "churches" here in the United States of American, where the Constitution guarantees me the right to pursue "life, liberty, and happiness" all inalienably granted by GOD!

Dear Pastor Jones,
Two wrongs don't make a right. If you go thru with burning the Koran and any of our troops get harmed because of it, are you going to take responsibility for that? Only one has the right to judge, you of all people should know that. And when that judgement day comes, those radical islams who participated in such violent behavior will be judged accordingly. Please, think of the young men and women over seas who this could cause great harm to. Let our Lord handle this.
May the Lord be with you,
Richele Gutierrez

U should go ahead with burning koran otherwise religious fanatics think that everyone is scared of their threat.
Islam is going to be a threat for world peace.Islam must be modernized itself or it will vanish one day.

Pastor Jones: I take it you don't have a child in the military. Well, I do and I would appreciate it if you wouldn't make his job any harder or cause harm to him. You are supposed to be a leader not an instigator and you are not making anything right by burning a book. My son's life means more to me that you proving a point. I am praying that you will do the right thing and not add to the madness around us.

Petraeus is not fit to command our troops....our soliders have been in harms way long before Pastor Jones made the decison to burn the Koran.
Other countries have burn/spit on our Bible/Flag and have dragged our soliders through the streets to their death....Remember this....where was the out cry from American.
Finally, a pastor that has read the Bible other than to know "God is Love"

While I can understand the belief that this kind of demonstration will wake up the world in general to the violence caused by extremists, I don't believe that burning what those same extremists consider a sacred text is the answer. There are people who believe in the Quran that do not agree with the actions these extremists take and to them, this is just as painful. While most may not believe in their religion, it is not our right to judge them or their beliefs, but God's. Only He can sit in judgement over us and how we live our lives, not a fellow human being. This kind of demonstration has been seen before and it never ends well. The most notable would be ordered by Hitler. He also believed that a people who held a certain religious belief were evil and massacred thousands because of that belief. His belief was pure hatred and hate begets hate. The hate that spawns this type of demonstration will only cause more hate and that hatred will be directed toward our nation and our troops and that hatred will come from those extremists who already believe we are evil. Can this group really say that it's belief is any better than theirs and can they really justify that what they are about to do is being brought about by human hatred and not inspired by a loving God who watches over all of us? Or will this be another event in our history that our children will look upon and weep for the destruction that it could cause?

Muslim world never had any problem with the USA. Saudi, Egyptian, and Pakistani nations are best example of friendship and partnership with the USA. Muslim issues of Palestine, Kashmir, and Chechnya dragged USA in anti-Islam debate by those lobbies who want US-Islam on confrontation mode. Think twice.
Also Bible or Torah or any Hindu holy book has never been burned so publicly in any Muslim country ever. I am sad to see the wonderful America taking such radical turn in the name of first amendment. Religion be left alone. I hope Dr. Jones will think twice and will not hurt 1.3 billion followers of Islam out of them 99.9999% are peace loving. Right wingers exist in each religion and we must defy that minority in each culture, country, and religion.

The reason why america will fail is because, most of america doesnt look at the big picture. Its always instant gratification. We all know burning the quran wont cease terrorism, it can only add more fuel to the fire. Most rational people understand that this is uneeded. But again, the midwest idealogy reigns supreme, not all muslims are terrorists or extreme. The OKC bombing wasnt by a muslim, but by a white. Im not comparing 9/11 to OKC, but to be a bigot and think that all muslims are bad, is the same mind set the middle east has about us. Which is we are all bad poeple.

What is wrong with you and your followers? You do NOT burn another person's BIBLE even if it is called a Koran. If you are TRUE Christians, you must know that God is the same in any religion. You by doing this act may endanger our soldiers, of which I have two grandson's in the Marine's , and would not want any harm to ever come to them if they were in the battlefield, or any other person's child , son, daughter, loved one, husband, wife, mother or father because of an aggressive action done out of ignorance on our American soil. Please stop this insanity before you trigger some other horrendous act by persons not willing to accept others for trying to have their freedoms as told that we can have in our constitution. This is the United States of America, have you forgotten where you live, and what it means to be an American??? Christians love one another, they do not "crucify" each other.

Toromoro,
I agree with you. We must remember how many "HOLY" people use GOD to justify their hatefulness of others.
If the so called laughable pastor Jones does believe in the Bible and not take passages that suit his con to steel money would have read that we should not Judge Others, it is the Lord that does this.

Pastor, do you really crave attention this much? This little fund/follower raiser will backfire on you. We will all learn your name and you'll get your 15mins. and you will blacken our (U.S.) eye. This is as selfcentered as it gets. Do you represent all evangelicals? Do you represent Jesus? America? I have always found it curious how the behavior of right wing Christians is at the utmost Un-Christ-like.
HATE HATE HATE HATE thats all you got. I hope you know how to read. I tried to keep it at a 3rd grade level for you.
Our boy's blood is on your hands. But you care about you. This is your right though. Way to go genius!!
Ya know, you are also free to think. . .Give it a shot.

Does anyone remember the most important reason for forming our country? I will give you a hint: It is the first part of the first amendment to our sacred constitution- ahead of free speech. In case you have forgotten, here is the letter of the first amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Pretty simple, huh. I wish I could synthesize my thoughts so eloquently. It seems as if our founders believed this freedom of religion idea was fairly important to mention it as the very first fundamental right of free people.
Before the “freedom of speech” people start waiving their hands like someone suffering from a urinary tract infection, let us get one thing straight. This is not an exercise in free speech or a peaceful assembly. It is an act of hatred and an attack on our constitution and freedom. The Pious Pastor purports to be sending a message to terrorists; what is the message? Hey! We have the perfect recruiting tool for you! You are absolutely correct about us! I find it hard to believe there is any other purpose than to attract media attention to him. He is going to burn books? Really? Nazis burned books. So f-ing what if they burn our flags and bibles! An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. Turn the other cheek, sir. WWJD?
One good thing will come of this tragic comedy. This pastor has inspired me to go out and buy a copy of the Koran. I have always wanted to in an interest to learn a new perspective and not be subjected to getting my information second hand. I think I will buy a copy this Saturday. I cannot think of a better way to honor all the people who have sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom, including the 911 victims, than to show my tolerance to beliefs different from my own. I challenge everyone to do the same in support of freedom.

Pastor, Where is your head, and have you checked your real motives. I am a Christian woman with an extremely strong belief system, and incredible faith. What you are proposing is wrong. There is no doubt the attacks against the USA on September 11th were wrong, and the act itself outrages me. The idea of a mosque being built within two blocks of the WW Trade Center memorial also outrages me, but I believe there is more Christian way to handle our outrage without adding fuel to a fire that is already out of control. What you are proposing is going to put many lives in danger. We have men and women on foreign soil fighting for our freedom who are already in enough danger without you putting them directly in the line of fire, and farther in harm's way.
Your website, which I noticed has been temporarily take "Off Line" (imagine that). Other information on the internet states that your church is a New Testament Church. With that being said, surely as a "Christian Pastor" you have read the New Testament. Although, I must admit your interpretation of scripture is somewhat skewed to say the least.
New Testament scripture, which I think you are completely ignoring is as follows:
Deut 32:35 To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence. This is God speaking... clearly vengeance is his call and not yours.
Matt: 18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times; but Until seventy times seven. This is daily... by my calculation this equates to 490 times a day.
2 Chronicles 20:15 The Lord says this to you: Be not afraid of dismayed at this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. 20:17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle; set yourselves, stand ye STILL, and see the salvation of the Lord with your.
Matt 6:14 If I forgive people their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], my heavenly Fathr will also forgive me.
Luke 6:37 I condemn not, and I shall not be condemned, I forgive, and I will be forgiven.
Matt 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.
If you are crave attention this much... have your congregation through a party in your honor, plaster your walls with your picture, but do not place innocent lives in danger. I fully understand that our Bible has been burned in many countries, but come on... get real.. do you honestly believe two wrongs make a right? Our call is to draw people to our Lord and Saviour, not push them away through radical actions such as the one you are proposing. Get a life, stop thinking about yourself and consider the consequences of your actions.

brilliant idea it should be done all over the world

People should stop automatically assuming that this pastor is a Christian or try to reason with him in the name of Christ, as if he were part of the Christian community. I have to giggle when people address him as "Dear Brother in Christ" !
The US tradition of book-burning and racial hatred stems directly from the Ku Klux Klan, not from the Bible. This is the well of hatred Pastor Jones is coming from. He'd be devoutly burning black men in Alabama in the name of God and Country, if he had been born a century or two ago ago.
But this fellow's just a useful idiot. Others are no doubt egging him on from the sidelines and amplifying the story, to foster the "civilization cars", which are the neocon/christian right coalition's current hobby-horse. They need to whip up anti-muslim hysteria among the population to further their attempts to gain supremacy in the Middle East. Hence, a lot of the highly mediatised campaigns in the Western press denouncing anything that could tenuously be attributed to Islam, provoking Muslim communities throughout the world, generating increasing hostility on both sides.
It's an age-old tactic : divide to rule, create straw-man enemies to divert people's attention from the fact that you're rifling their pockets, but it often works. It will get worse, as we ratchet up towards the increasingly likely attack on Iran and the global chaos that will ensue.

The Dove World Outreach Center is certainly not reaching out to the world in peace, as their namesake implies. It is not right to burn anyone's holy book. How would Pastor Jones feel if someone were to burn the Holy Bible? His actions are irrational and careless. Not only is he endangering our troops, but he is asking for another attack on our nation. The power he has received from all the attention his church has created is clouding his judgment - and most certainly is clouding his ability to actually hear his God. The God I know would never want this to happen.

You American's make us laugh (well some of you!) Most of us, over this side of the pond, left all this religious nonsense back where it belongs (in the middle ages). The great evil here is religion. You will never stop the endless arguments about who is right and who is wrong because all religion is made up by man alone and so is subject to endless to endless interpretation, rumour and abuse. There as many idiot Christians (mainly in America) as their idiot Muslims and they will never see eye to eye. Most of this is based on ignorance and lack of education; the more people are educated the more they will see through the fallacy of belief in any kind of God.
Pastor Jones is plainly an idiot and his childish stunt will self-evidently lead to more pain, violence and (I genuinely hope not) death. But he does not care about that because he is right! How could he possibly be wrong as he has prayed to his version of God. The Christian Taliban in the US (and that is genuinely what they are) are very similar to the Taliban in the Middle East and if we don’t keep all these deluded morons in check then they will lead other more susceptible people down there deluded path to mutual loathing and destruction.
It is time for the US to grow up and leave God behind and show radical, and non radical, Muslims the real truth that there is no God and human beings can lead good moral lives without referring to ancient books that at best are the ramblings of people who made it all up around 1,500 years ago.

Burning the Koran is an extremely foolish action that can come back and haunt is in many ways. The USA has many friendly nations in the moderate Muslim world and stupidity such as burning Korans can jeopardize those friendships.
They can put US Military personnel at additional risk, as well as, Americans traveling abroad targets for retaliation .
But the biggest threat that burning the Korans could trigger is within the USA, Several years ago Osama Ben Laden received permission form an extreme Muslim Cleric to kill up to a Million children is support of their Jihad activities.
There are some cities in the USA with significant Muslim populations if an extreme Muslim cleric should incite some of his followers in local Jihad activity. One of the targets of opportunity could be elementary and middle schools in semi isolated locations. Many have only one road for access and a few insurgents can accomplish a lot of damage in a few minutes before a police or military repentance could arrive even by helicopter it could be all over.
One of the major problems is with the way school are trained to respond to a potential school shooting situation by using a lockdown of facilitates. It is a good tactic if the threat is with guns and a very few people are involved.
But if your insurgent are using nerve gas agents they don't necessarily have to penetrate the facility to induce agents into the school. Most schools are not air conditioned and their windows are breakable by thrown objects. Syrian gas is relatively ease to manufacture and put in breakable bottles for gas grenades. If a school is using lockdown during an insurgent attack using nerve agents they can basically plan on a 85%+ causality with most being fatal.
Escape and evasion provides a much better option under such circumstances you will still have fatal causalities but your rates will be significantly less.
The school need to develop an escape and evasion plan where each class will egress the building as fast as possible and go to as many different directions as possible away from the building taking advantage of the topology and trees and undergrowth for concealment each teacher should communicate with administration when they escape via portable radio or cell phone. Each class will have predefined location for concealment lower grades closer in and older grades further out. Teaches should call in to administration when at their assigned location and give head counts and casualty information, the object is to get as many students their assigned area as possible in as short a period as possible, this means you do not stop to render any aid in route you do not stop for stragglers. You have to get as many to safety as quickly as possible and you attrite the rest. And this has to be drilled into your teachers and staff.
Your escape and evasion plan need formal planning and must be exercised and coordinated with local law enforcement and what your duress code will be when you have an insurgent attack. This does not apply to that many school system in the USA but those that it does apply to the planning is imperative.
Posted by: Notlaw99 | September 8, 2010 10:06 AM
Dear Notlaw99 – I fear you have been watching far too many movies! You have painted a pretty far fetched picture there and then made it sound almost likely. Sure any number of exceptional things could happen but that is the point: they could happen. And we really should all keep perspective on these things (I say ‘we’ because we in the UK are on the hit list for these morons, as well, for our support of the US in military operations in the Middle East).
Lets be honest most of the radicalised ‘home grown’ terrorists are pretty dim. Those that radicalise then are a bit cleverer (but not much) and they pick on life’s unfortunates and persuade them of the wonders of radical Islam (all religions do this to swell their numbers). These half-wits then try and pull off an attack and invariably fail miserably. Even if they do manage to do something, they usually only end up injuring or killing themselves. The bottom line is they are all generally too stupid to pull off anything close to the kind of attack you imagine.
The second point I would like to raise with you is the assertion that Osama bin Laden got permission to kill up to a million children. Firstly, how do you seriously know that? Indeed, how does anyone seriously know that, unless you were there? Secondly, do you seriously think a madman like Bin Laden would bother getting permission from a cleric? Of course not, he is living in his own world where he makes the rules – if he is still alive of course?
This all smacks of extreme scare mongering – Children, million dead, nerve gas, schools, etc. We have had terrorism in the UK since the 1970s (IRA from Northern Ireland – paid for in the most part by Americans – came over bombing London and other major UK cities) and the key to terrorism is in the word. There prime objective is to terrorise you, me and everyone else. They do this by trying to kill people, and very, very rarely succeeding, but that is a means to an end. They want to scare you into believing what they believe, changing US policy, releasing prisoners, etc. and I am sorry to say that you, notlaw99, are playing right into their hands and helping them terrorise people.
Please do not think I am trying to play down previous terrorist atrocities (especially 9/11 and 7/7 in London) but I genuinely believe we should not give these Bas***ds the satisfaction of thinking they have us all terrorised.
Posted by: Simon from England | September 8, 2010 10:51 AM
Destroying the Koran is a foolish act that could lead to a revolt against Christians as well as America. Pastor Jones' reaction is obviously based off of emotion and feelings rather than reason and logic, which has been the cause of many unnecessary issues within the American culture.
Posted by: MiSean | September 8, 2010 2:12 PM
This action by this "church" is an act of the carnal mind and the flesh. There is not an iota of love involved. The Dove World Outreach Center is the equivelent of that other church cheering the death of American soldiers. Love your enemies what's so hard to understand? God's standard is higher than man's.

Mr. Jones,
How can you call yourself a Pastor??? You need to read the scriptures that you profess to know... like BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD... He can handle this one on his own.
What you are doing is totally out of line. Your selfishness is putting Americans abroad and those living in the states in extreme danger. What do you think separates you from other extremists?? NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING
Posted by: Deb | September 8, 2010 8:26 PM
To the knuckle heads who have posted here, which I will assume will never read this-TJC I am talking to you specifically.
First Amendment was never meant to be the shield of hate, the courts say so, history says so. So why not arrest this so-called Pastor immediately or as soon as he tries to burn a single Koran. If our government, Florida or Federal, lets this guy and his seriously disturbed followers do this then it is giving tacit permission and consent of the government to open season on Islam.
I served, lost many friends in my service to my country to protect it from lunatics like this guy. I swore an oath to protect America from all enemies, either foreign or domestic and this guys is obviously a domestic threat to national security, national safety and to our world.
Arrest him now- violence of this type is never the way. We must take the high road and maintain the high ground. If we allow this mad man-this devil-this satan to burn the Koran we are no better than he is.

Evidently you were dropped on your head too many times!!! Are you stupid, or just insane? I do not care if you like the muslim religion or not. Book burning of any kind is reprehensible, but more so, if it is a religious book. Our country was founded on religous freedoms also. Whatever happens to you, you deserve. Many of us have sons and daughters in Iraq and Afganistan, and if your stunt causes trouble, I am sure someone out there will retaliate. Yes, we have the right to free speach, but our soldiers fighting for our rights and freedom, give us those rights.....the very people you are potentially endangering. So, if you don't like like the way things are, pick up a rifle and go help our troops, NOT hinder them. Get a brain, idiot!!!
Posted by: Jackie Olson | September 9, 2010 1:25 AM
Pastor Jones is not going to back down. All of this talk is Double Dog Darin' him. Even if, by now, the Lord has appeared to him and said, "Really, Terry..." His pride is on the line, now.
On the news last night, one commentator said that ...when the Muslim world sees these Qurans being burned... So, what if there is no media coverage of this burning...no pictures, no attention. Nothing. Not that I'm suggesting that this be hidden. Remember the old 60s question: What if the threw a war and nobody came? Well, what if a Looney Toon fanatic behaved foolishly and no one rewarded him?
