Freebie Friday: Noah's Compass by Anne Tyler

anne tyler vs. stacey kiebler

I'm filling in for Nancy on an abbreviated, holiday edition Freebie Friday.

She'll consult the oracles to pick the winner of last week's giveaway. But in the meantime, here's this week's prize: Noah's Compass by Anne Tyler.

Baltimore's best novelist explores the complexities of middle-age relationships and love in her new book, which will be released next week. It's a quiet tale of Baltimore life -- the sort that Tyler crafts so well -- but has its share of twists and turns to keep readers committed.

You know the drill: To enter, tell us what you're reading as the new year begins.

Happy New Year, I am reading a financial thriller entitled "Top Producer" by Norb Vonnegut.

I've heard so many wonderful things about Noah's Compass! What I'm reading right now is One Amazing Thing by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. Almost finished with it, but with all the festivities of the past 2 weeks I haven't gotten in quite as much reading time!

I'm reading NANNY RETURNS by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus.

I am reading "The Way I See it" Temple Grandin.

I'm reading Revolution Down on the Farm: The Transformation of American Agriculture Since 1929.

Oops. I forgot to mention my own current read "And Another Thing ... " by Eoin Colfer.

Yesterday, I finished Baltimore Blues by Laura Lippman. Next up is the Last Lecture by Randy Pausch.

I'm reading March by Geraldine Brooks and loving it. I'm going to follow it up with the new Louisa May Alcott biography ( previous Friday Freebie!) I think they will go together nicely.

Happy New Year to you both, Dave and Nancy.

I reading WOMAN MADE OF SAND, a novel in stories by Joann Kobin. It was published in 2002, and I'm planning to introduce it to several friends; a wonderful collection.

currently reading mating rituals of the north american wasp thanks

I am currently reading "Deaf Sentence" by David Lodge, who writes some of the best academic comedies I have ever read (see "Small World" and "Trading Places" for starters). This one is darker, but still has flashes of Lodge's trademark wit. It deals with a retired British professor of linguistics who is hearing-impaired, and his reluctant involvement with an American graduate student who is writing a dissertation on suicide notes. It may be the best book I have ever read dealing with the minutiae of hearing aids (come to think of it, the only book on this subject!)

Very appropriate Captcha: messiest other

I'm reading Between Here and April by Deborah Copaken Kogan as the new year begins and then trying to make a dent in my TBR pile.

I just finished The Magician's Elephant by Kate DiCamillo. In a different way she has done it again- wonderful!

I am reading "Under The Dome" by Stephen King - a Christmas present.

I've got
Beat the Reaper at work &
Unnatural Exposure on audio at work

I'm working on
True Detectives at the treadmill
& I just finished Ghostwalk in the bathroom.

Will probably start The Gate House, as that's still on my table & not in the bookshelf yet.

Thanks for the giveaway >^..^<

I am reading The Painted House by John Grisham, and am about to start The Road.

I am reading all the entries in the blog, Zen Habits.

I'm reading Battle Royale by Koushun Takami and I'm not enjoying it much. It's for book club, though, so I'm slogging through and should finish it today.

reading stuff for work. i love anne tyler

It's great to see that folks have kept up their reading during the holidays. I find it the hardest time to maintain traction on a book. It took me a couple of weeks to get through "And Another Thing .. " which should have been a breezy read.
Now there's more pressure on the next book,, because I want to make sure I get momentum with something gripping.
Or maybe I should be a literary polygamist like Alicia, to reduce the pressure on any one book. Not sure I can juggle that much.

I am reading Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerney

I just finished reading Open by Andre agassi and really enjoyed it. I couldn't put it down.

I'm reading The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson for my mystery book group and looking forward to Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel which was a Christmas gift.

I've heard great things about Wolf Hall -- I'm putting that on my list for 2010.

A Christmas Blizzard by Garrison Keillor. So far - 37 pages in - we're still developing characters and relationships, but Keillor is in that wry mode that I like so much.

I'm reading A Jury of Her Peers by Elaine Showalter--"American Women Writers from Anne Bradstreet to Annie Proulx." Just this morning, I came to the section about Anne Tyler. The author writes of Tyler's "brilliant imaging of sanctuaries and spiritual rebirth," a good description, I think, of the heart of her novels.

I just finished reading a Christmas present, "Borkmann's Point" by Hakan Nesser. It's terrific and has a shocker of an ending.

Happy birthday, Dave!

Reading : A Test of Wills; Charles Todd;.
Thank you! & Happy New Year.

have read Noah's Compass. love her work. reading The Glass Room by Simon Mawer

I am reading the new Chuck Klosterman essay collection, Eating the Dinosaur. I have read all of his collections and although they tend to focus on similar pop-culture topics, I like the way his mind works! I also of course love Anne Tyler, both for her writing style and the city in which many of her novels take place:)

I'm reading two books right now:
The White Queen by Philippa Boyens and Inkheart by Corenelia Funke.

I just finished The Crossing Places
by Elly Griffiths and am looking at the towering TBR pile for my next pick.

I am reading Shogun by James Clavell for probably the 4th time.

I am currently reading In My Father's Shadow by Chris Welles Feder and The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. I just finished Her Fearful Symmetry...so many books, so little time!

I just came across this on a search for Anne Tyler info - I am Canadian, but a fan of Baltimore vicariously through Tyler's books! I just finished reading "Best Friends Forever" by Jennifer Weiner.

I am re-reading Julie and Julia and just finished The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner's Dilemma by Trenton Lee Stewart.

I'm reading a fascinating non-fiction book called Surviving the Extremes by Kenneth Kammler, MD

I'm reading Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert

Just read My Life in France and now reading Julia's biography.

I'm finishing Too Much Happiness by Alice Munro.
