Stephenie Meyer needs a break; so go see New Moon

stephanie meyerThe pre-holiday season has already spawned pop blockbusters from Dan Brown ("The Lost Symbol") and Stephen King ("Under the Dome"), but another super-hot author, Stephenie Meyer, is waiting it out. (Likely on a very comfy lawn chair, peering out over the Arizona desert.)

She says she "is a little burned out on vampires right now" -- a statement that will make millions of her fans feel faint. "I might go spend some time with my aliens, I might do something completely different. I've got to cleanse the palate," Meyer said recently in an Oprah interview. She hinted that she might try her hand at a pure fantasy novel, a la J.K. Rowling -- you know, one with a map in the front.

At least her Twilight devotees have something else to look forward to: Friday's release of the "New Moon" movie.

Maybe King has psyched Meyer out with his statement that she "can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good." Or maybe she's worried that King will drop a copy of his new hardback -- more than 1,000 pages worth -- on her if she fights back.

Stephen King is a moron. His opinion is that she can't write. Doesn't matter... it's all about if you can captivate your audience or not. Go read a children's story. Very basic writing yet it's all about if the story can spark the imagination of the reader. Stephanie has OBVIOUSLY done that. While her books are not masterpieces by any means, it's the STORY that draws you in. I am not a big reader but I got sucked into the Twilight books and enjoyed reading them a lot. Sure, some writing issues bothered me but the story triumphed over any flaws. For someone to have a dream and write four novels about the people she saw in the dream and to have it explode into a billion dollar franchise is NOT a bad writer. It's capturing the imagination of the world by storm (of course... not everyone) but you can't deny that Twlight is nothing but a pure genius' success story.

Stephen King is a has-been... sounds like someon's having a mid-life crisis and is feeling a bit jealous of a beginner's smashing success.

I have to agree with you Mark. Completely. You have to give it to her regardless...is this not her first novel and she turned the entire story into a four part saga. Come on now, its Young Adult...what is it that everyone is expecting...she has captivated the hearts and minds of nearly every teenage girl and grown woman alike...what more can you ask for? Maybe when she is as "experienced" as Mr. King then he can have an opinion about her writing. For now, maybe he should just clam up. Stephenie, you continue to do what you do...and your fans will continue to follow.

what? stephen king is a mormon too? get out of here! i didnt know that!

Not sure where you read that... but Stephen King is not a Mormon. I'm not sure which, if any, faith he follows.

Mark I agree with you very much. Stephenie Meyer not good? HUM what planet does he live on? I am a 28 yr old mom, and I have read and reread the entire series many times. The books captivate you. Plan and simple. I have yet to EVER pick up a Steven King book and be captivated. Read them, yes, but after finishing them I have never had the wish to read them again. Mr. Has Been should write and YA master piece. After he has done that THEN talk his crap.. Till then... He should SShhhhhhhh and keep his opinions to himself...

Personally, the only reason I was able to read this series with my crazy life was because her books ARE an easy read. I think too many authors try to write the most complicated interwoven stories all jacked-up with over-the-top vocabulary nowadays. Stephenie managed to write a beautiful at times very intense love/action/suspense story and all the while keep it at levels that everyone from early teens to the elderly could easily read and comprehend and relate to. Stephen King and the others are just miffed by her HUGE success with this series (btw The Host was just as good) and are trying to draw some attention for sales of their own books. Shame on them. Stephenie Meyer earned this phenomenal success - let her enjoy it!!

I have to go with King on that Meyer can't write worth a darn. King's writing career is almost as old as Meyer's current age. Plus King has written more novels and has made the best seller list more times than Meyer.

Meyer's story does draw people in, but the way it was written is very confusing and dull.

Sorry to break this to you all, but as a published writer myself, I have to say that Ms. Meyer is not talented when it comes to writing. Her writing lacks focus; it's almost as if she tries too hard. Also, it's boring. Her books didn't become popular until AFTER the movies were made; most teenage girls (the only ones willing to admit they've purchased a book about sparkly vampires) buy the books but don't really read them. Teenagers nowadays, most of them, wouldn't know good writing if it bit them in the...well, you know. Stephen King has nothing to be jealous about-he's had a successful 30+ year career and sold over 350 million books-far surpassing Meyer. To say he's jealous, even a little, is pure idiocy. All of King's books have been best sellers and his reputation as a writer is epic. Jealous? If anything Meyer is jealous.

For those who say King doesn't know any better.... SHUT UP.

King did not criticize Meyer because of of jealousy or to get some fame--HE IS ALREADY FAMOUS!!! He has a ton of movies, TV Shows, Comics based off his stories and all of his books outsold Meyer's whole Twilight series. Even ONE of his books outsold them. Whatever he writes is automatically sold because his previous stories have been just as wonderful.

Plus, he has a ton of awards, is hailed for his grammar/writing... he knows better. He has written fantasy and horror, and even romance.

He was asked in an interview what he thought about her, and he simply stated it. He didn't just stand in the middle of NYC and screamed "Meyer can't write worth a darn", he just answered the question the interviewer asked him.

You guys are all completely immature and should be ashamed. Stephen King actually DOES know what he's talking about and has been in the field a lot longer than that rookie Meyer (who I think is a hack that got lucky).

Before you say something, maybe you should sve yourself from looking like a drooling idiot by thinking before you write or maybe a lil' thing called RESEARCH.

I think the only person who should be jealous is Meyer.

From Twilightsucks.com

Twilight lacks a consistently well rounded plot and what 'plot' it does have is poorly slopped together and covered in clichés.

Many have claimed it reads like fanfiction, and the sad truth is...it does. Aside from being constantly showered with Marysue babblings you're forced to struggle with poor writing, blatant grammatical errors, poor sentence structure, and the mother load of them all...thesaurus rape.

There's no denying Twilight is horribly repetitive. It's as if Stephenie Meyer assumes all her readers have the attention span of a yippy chihuahua and that the reader has to constantly be reminded just how hot Edward is and that seems to be the only apparent reason the fans hang in there for that long. There's no 'plot' development to speak of, no underlying suspense, no revelations, no character growth, nope...all we get for 3/4ths of the book is the assurance that Eddiepoo is the hottest man alive and whatever anti climactic shit the lead endures it's all totally worth it just to live another day to gaze upon that incandescent chest and those marble smooth biceps. Oh la la.

She has no problem telling us Bella is smart, that Bella can do this and this, That Bella enjoys doing this and this, but NEVER does she actually show us that she does these things. Never once do we actually see Bella doing or saying something smart that isn't ripped out of last week's class assignment. Never once do we see her delving into a good book, we're told these things have occurred but never once are we shown. The narrator is biased, sure Bella claims to do these things and to embody certain traits and abilities but she never once takes advantage of these attributes she so loves to brag about. Is there something in the water of Forks that turns its citizens into helpless, brainless, drones?

Ugggh, my teen daughter dragged me to see New Moon over the weekend. The dialogue was so painful my ear drums were begging to be released from my ear canals.
I think Stephenie Meyer is a very lucky woman who realizes the public thrives on mediocrity....

I agree that Stephanie Meyer is not a very talented writer, her writing lacks focus and devotion, and the same thing happens again and again whilst she fills the gaps between each twist. I've read two of them so far, and yes, the flaws made me want to drop the book and run for cover, but the plotline was good, if a better writer could have taken the plotline, and written it all in different context, i think it would be better. Still, too many people are obsessing about how much they hate twilight.
I mean, It's just a book...

I'll admit i saw the first Twilight movie, but I don't think I'll see any more of the movies. The only good part of the first movie was when the credits came on and they played Radiohead. That was saweet! The soundtracks usually have great music which is okay i guess.
