Obama wins Nobel after U.S. authors snubbed

obama wins nobel peace prize Well, for all the Euro-centrism shown judging the Nobel Literature, those who award the Peace Prize went out of their way today to honor President Barack Obama. He won even though he took office shortly before the nomination deadline, and has yet to end conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, or make significant inroads in the Middle East. There's no doubt, however, that simply by becoming America's first black president, he has made a powerful statement. (And maybe, as some speculate, the judges also wanted to take a slap at George Bush.)

As a addendum to my rant yesterday, when Nobel judges again snubbed U.S. authors to honor Herta Mueller, let me note that since 1994, all but two winners have been European citizens. And this story notes that because judges from the Swedish Academy tend to have a European outlook on literature.Peter Englund, who replaced Horace Engdahl as the academy's permanent secretary in June, told AP: "In most language areas ... there are authors that really deserve and could get the Nobel Prize and that goes for the United States and the Americas, as well." He added: "I think that is a problem. We tend to relate more easily to literature written in Europe and in the European tradition."

Engdahl said last year that "Europe still is the center of the literary world" and U.S. authors were "too sensitive to trends in their own mass culture."

Ouch. Maybe Obama can win it for the U.S. in literature, too, some day.

It amazes me that someone who is so anti-gun was awarded a prize that is named after the man who invented smokless gunpowder which made it possible for firearms to reach the level of engineering they are at today. HAHAHA!!!

wow, just wow, why are you so jealous on European authors? You seem to display the same type of behavior as a prejudiced European who would claim that is it high time that a scientist from Europe won a Nobel in Chemistry or Medicine because there have been way too many Americans on the winning list. Have you actually read anything by Jelinek, or Muller? How can you pass judgment about the quality of their work without even knowing anything about it? I am a Romanian-born American, and I read some of Mrs. Muller's books as well as all of Elfriede Jelinek's novels and I would be very happy if Pynchon or Roth win the prize next year. Good literature has no nationality, Mr. Rosenthal.

To Laura O.
I think you are absolutely right. We should forget about the Nobel foundation and the Nobel prize in science or arts and concentrate more on MTV Video Music Awards. We need more of that.

Check your facts. Alfred Nobel invented dynamite and gelignite. These are explosives and not gunpowder. The Nobel Physics Prize Committee just contacted me becasue I once picked up a physics book. What a joke; just like Obama is!

Why do you have to choose 1994 as a year to prove your point? Had you picked 1990, you would have had to include the non-European citizens who were awarded the prize in the early 1990s. Last year's winner Le Clézio actually lives in New Mexico for the moment and Gao Xingjian may be another French citizen but he's a Chinese author and while Doris Lessing is a British citizen, she's written some very good books on Africa where she grew up during Colonial times. A certain degree of Eurocentrism is inevitable for a European prize just as a literary award given by a panel in Tokyo would more easily pick a Chinese winner that is not known to them because he's made it in Paris. I happen to like most Nobel writers I've read and among my favorites are Steinbeck and Buck who were both deemed irrelevant in a Newsweek.com column by Malcolm Jones the other day.

What a charming egalitarian gesture!

What's next? A Nobel Law Enforcement Prize to Barney Fife?

There is no doubt in my mind that President Obama is a very good man indeed, but the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to him is too early in my mind. In this respect the wider world was not even aware of him just a mere three years ago. I am not saying that he was not a worthy candidate, but where there are more worthy people in this life who indirectly save millions of lives, are completely unknown for their effects on global peace work and are therefore never considered for the Nobel Award. This is the dilemma hovering over the Nobel Peace Prize. Have those who have won the Prize saved more lives that anyone else through their actions? Unfortunately I have to say that at this point in time I doubt that Obama can enter into such an illustrious group of people who have literally saved more lives than any others in our world history.
I had the privilege to work with two of world’s most unknown celebrities who did indeed save millions of lives through their incredible work and where this work still saves millions every year all over the world. The first is the late Glenn Seaborg, the ‘father’ of the chemistry of Chemotherapy and initiator of the ‘Test Ban Treaty’ for Nuclear weapons. It is estimated that Seaborg through his chemistry and his creation of many of the chemical isotopes used in chemotherapy, has saved literally over 100 million human lives to date over the past 50-years alone. This has been through a cure or an extension of human life and where their loved ones have benefited through having these loved ones with them far longer than would have been the case without Seaborg’s incredible creativity. Many more millions of human lives ravaged by Cancer will be saved in the future and today. Indeed the number of people saved by the nuclear test ban initiation is incalculable, but one has to only think, where the world might be today without Seaborg’s initiative. Indeed, Nuclear war might well have happened already in our own lifetime.
The second person that I worked with was the late John Argyris, the modern-day inventor of the ‘Finite Element Method’. To put this great engineering achievement into perspective is hard to do for the layman, but where it has revolutionised global engineering design so much that we now have far safer cars, buildings, bridges, aeroplanes, dams, trains, and the list goes on. Indeed, without Argyris’s input for NASA’s pre-runner, the 1969 moon landing would never have happened and the space-shuttle may never have removed itself from planet Earth..
Adding to this today through Argyris’s revolutionary engineering work we live in a completely safer world and where his work has even spread into all the sciences, including physiology, where the minutest of stress in the human body can be detected and a patient’s life saved. Indeed, it is estimated again that Argyris has saved hundreds of millions through this far greater safety in structural design throughout the world, through buildings and dams et al not collapsing. But were these two great men of science and engineering who have saved literally millions and millions of lives ever considered by the Nobel Foundation for their Peace Prize by saving all these millions? No.
I therefore feel that the Nobel Prize as today belittles itself again, its real value and against those humanitarians who do truly deserve it.

This is nothing but rigged political drivel. It's absolutely absurd! Do they actually think they can pull such a disgusting stunt and think the people that know what he is about and raise his popularity? What a hilarious, feeble, and ridiculous manuver on their part.
PS: The picture tells it all; he is self worshiping and narcissic. He likens himself to a mangod. He is complicit in the murder of his homosexual church members, and has spent 1.6 MILLION dollars hiding his birth and school records. He is a proven liar and manipulator.

If you can handle the TRUTH!

Well, well, well! Another blow to the republican- talibans (terrorists) who were already stewing in hate and jealousy because the nation elected the first Afro-American president. I can only imagine how they are feeling right about now. Pretty pissed off! One thing is for sure these hypocrites got kicked deeply in the ---- by the Nobel peace prize committee. Do you honestly think they were going to award such a prestigious award to George W. Bush or his fellow terrorists. Republicans don't know anything about peace or its merits. It goes to show you how the rest of the world views our great president Barak Obama whose accomplishments are just beginning. Stay tuned losers.

wow this award means absolutely nothing now.

Lets tell the innocent civilians this liar has been bombing in afghanistan that he's a a man of "eace"

Oh, wait I forgot: they don't count as people

Obama- the biggest liar who has done nothing but be Bush's 3rd term.

http://patriotsquestion911.com

This is another attempt by the Liberal world to continue to prop up this media creation known as Barack Obama. He's all sizzle with not mucj steak.

thelastradition.blogspot.com/

Noble Peace Prize? For what?
He's done NOTHING, NOTHING.
Someone is setting this man up. And for what? I don't know, but you may ask is VP. Remember, he said that Obama will be tested while in office, What did he mean by that? Only the shadow knows.

You got it right- Bush's 3rd term.
- Bank takeover, Bush
- Afghanistan, Bush
- Gitmo, Bush
- Patriot Act Expansion, Bush
- More Wiretapping Citizens, Bush

What has this guy done that wasn't started by Bush?

The Nobel is FUBAR, have a look at the list of the worlds most disgusting sociopaths who have recieved it recently. If Hitler was still aound he no doubt would win one as well?

The Nobel prize has been devaluated to the status of the 1970's American 'The Gong Show'.....

Very Very sad. Its all a part of the 'feel good' generation making 'hopeful' expectations....

I think the committee responsible for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize is either very stupid or very smart. It they are very stupid, they have awarded a prize to someone who has done nothing to deserve it. If they are very smart, they have obliged the American President to earn it.

This is gr8.. he becam e presidnet on jan. the nomination started on feb. within 2 weeks time he managed to show the world that he is nobel prize winner. What exactly has he done to get this award.

And Just asking.... Why didnt Gandhi get a Nobel Award. he was the man who introduced Ahimsa(non violence) and nobody seems to remember that or award him.

No balls pizza prize? He deserves that, maybe.

I understand the Swedes are getting together a special group made up of children Obama has blinded, burned, orphaned or maimed, along with some of the tortured prisoners from Guantanamo to actually present the prize to him.

Obama is a fraud and the Nobel price is a gift to a black person, what is wrong with this dummies? Aries has already admitted to writing the book - absolutely sick.

WHAT AN OUTRAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THESE PEOPLE HAVE MADE A MOCKERY OF THE PRIZE. OBAMA IS A WARMONGER AND TOTALITARIAN. HE IS A LIAR AND A PROMISE-BREAKER. HE VOTED TO CONTINUE THE PATRIOT ACT WHEN HE HAD PROMISED TO VOTE AGAINST IT IN THE SENATE. HE IS A TOOL OF THE BRZEZINSKI-SOROS FACTION OF GLOBALIST TOTATLITARIAN TRAITORS. IN FACT HE IS A TOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Laura O,

Nobel invented Dynamite, not smokeless gunpowder.

He provided for the awards in his will because he was horrified that his invention was used to kill people.

Don't just spout mindless political garbage.

Read a book sometime.

X.

Nobel for Obama?

No. This is a handy future get-out-of-jail card to be played when his grunts get embroiled in a particularly public and revolting Afghani massacre.

Still, if Kissinger gets a gong, we are all in the running for prizes.

What a surprising development, he won the Nobel Peace prize; a noble piece of what?

Is this the same Nobel Peace Prize given to Mother Theresa,Nelson Mandela,Martin Luther King and not given to Mahatma Gandhi .O Great Great. Please don't note down my address for next year's prize ,please
Sabu

How can anyone truly believe this was no more than the continuous line of ass-kissing the first black president? I thought this was for something you did or discovered. All Obama's done is wreck the economy, lie about GITMO, NOT get our troops home (well, he DID say he was only going to get them out of Iraq. He never said "I'm just going to get them killed next door!" But to give him a PEACE PRIZE for that? How this truly honorable metal has been reduced to a cheap trinket you hand out as a booby prize. Well, another fine institution lost to political correctness!

Awarding Obama the Nobel prize gives me the same nauseating feeling I had when they awarded Yasser Arafat a shared Nobel. The Nobel committee is a joke..!

All presidents are just puppets reading
from the same script.

9/11 was an inside job!!!!!!!

There are many aspects of this that one could talk about, but it seems to me that the main thing demonstrated by this travesty is the absolute irrelevance of the Nobel prizes, and the committees that award them. BHO's winning the prize amounts to no more than a tasteless joke, a joke that's not even funny.

To quote David Lindorf from www.thiscantbehappening.net :

"We're talking about a man whose practically first act upon taking office early this year was to escalate the ugly and pointless war in Afghanistan with the addition of some 20,000 troops, and who, even as the Nobel committee was discussing his award, was meeting with his military and political advisors to consider expanding that war even further, both in Afghanistan and across the border into Pakistan."

And presumably we are talking about the same Nobel committee that awarded Henry Kissinger the same prize in 1973?

What a total joke!

Maybe they can name the teleprompter award after him...

Obama is now 48 - year -old and 2009 is very crucial for him.
Obama was born on August 4 ,1961.

His marriage was at the age of 31(3+1=4).He was elected President in the November 4 election. He is the 4th

youngest US President. Also, he assumed charge after 148 years since the swearing in of Lincoln(148 adds up to 4).Also,it

was

after 40 years(4+0=4) of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

In a particular numerological way the year 2008 was important for obama.

He was born in 1961 which gives 17 by addition.1961+17 makes 1978.Now,1978 brings 25 by addition.Add 25

to 1978.That gives 2003.Number 2003 gives 5 by addition.Adding 5 to 2003 makes 2008.

Is it a mere number crunching? No ,not at all!

To substantiate this point see the case of Saddam Hussein .He was born in 1937 .Adding the numbers in 1937

gives 20 .Add 20 to 1937.Then we get 1957.It was in 1957 that Saddam joined the Revolutionary

party

Now add the numbers in 1957.Then we get 22.Adding 22 to 1957 gives 1979.

Saddam became Iraq president in the year 1979.

coming back to Obama, his name number (occult number) is 26 which adds up to 8.

b+a+r+a+c+k+o+b+a+m+a=2+1+2+1+3+2+7+2+1+4+1=26.

Michelle was born on January 17,1964.Hence her birth number is 8.Her occult number is 44.

Surprisingly, the fate number of Obama and Michelle is same.Their fate number is 29.It is obtained by adding

together the numbers of the date,,month and year of birth.

Briefly,Obama and Michelle carry the same fate number and occult number.Obama was elected 44th US President when Michelle

was 44 years.

Since the fate number is 29,the year 2009 is highly epoch making in their life.

Also, notably, age 48 is crucial in another way.Because,4 and 8 are his birth number and occult number respectively.

Many of you sound bitter. Another try at snubbing Mr. Oboma.

I would bet good money the man's tuxedo hasn't even got back from the cleaners by the time the of the deadline, but he did enough to win the Nobel Peace Prize??? Must have been all the hard work between the inauguration parties... What a stud!

My mother told me many years ago that if you have to denigrate others to make yourself feel good, you are showing yourself to be an undereducated clod. There are so many of those in these blogs. To think we even have a black President in this enviroonment in the US is astounding and President Obama should get a award just for accomplishing that. But I certainly wish these sore losers, racists or whatever they are would get over it and help rebuild the country. Rush Limbaugh, during an interview, admitted he is doing his show for ratings and M-O-N-E-Y (his comments, not mine) yet his followers, along with Glen Beck's don't get it - that they are playing right into their money hungry hands. Well, I congratulate the President on his award, hope for the best for this country despite all the negativity (fueled by press of all kinds) and hope that if we ever have another 9/11, the far right isn't going to sit back and clap.

Even the US actor Brad Pitt is more deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize than the warmonger Obama. Pitt has put his money where his mouth is and commissioned a housing project for homeless people devastated by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

The peace prize should only be awarded to people who at least have made an effort and done something other than what they're paid to do. The peace prize should never go to politicians. But what can we expect from a committee made up of Norwegian politicians anyway? They reward only on the basis of whether candidates do anything that fits in with a European (whatever that is) agenda.

He did not deserve a Nobel Peace Prize because he did nothing. They have just made a mockery out of the US and Obama made us even a bigger Mockery for accepting it. The old saying talk is cheap in this case it is true, he did nothing except read a few phoney speeches off a tela promter. Talk is cheap let's see some action!

wit all these racists & haters in america, he should win a nobel prize jus for gettin elected!!..

u see how much they HATE obama, i mean SERIOUS HATIN..

man we got real racism over here & i mean its mostly all OLD PEOPLE who don even know politics doin all the hatin

they hate EVRYTHING bout obama, yall see it on the blogs & the news man, the racists cant stand how much the WORLD LOVES OUR GREAT PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA..

he is a man of history & its too early for most people to see, but he has changed the world already, the world is differen since we witnessed his rise to power, whatever happened in humanity that felt special as we watched, was real & was felt by all humanity that was able to watch, it was captivating.. as his legend continues to grow, the world loves him & he will never be forgotten..

the haters are all jealous, hatin harder than ever... mostly racists & old people

So Charles Manson got pipped again.

Do you think he's deserving?

http://www.craigspr.org

I have nothing against Obama. He is a classic Democrat, flash a smile eloquent speech and do nothing good or bad and Americans eat it up. 8 years from know the Republicans will have to get out the mop wipe Oprah's drol off her face, rebuild the country and the world. Obama's nobel prize will still be shinny on his mantle while he and Bill re-live how they coasted through 16 years of America's nightmare.
