Proof that Dave loves me? He relinquished his copy of "Nightlight," Harvard Lampoon's spoof on "Twilight." Or, it's possible that he's just sick of anything Stephenie Meyer. You decide. Either way, it's very funny, without belaboring the point.

Instead of doing a chapter-by-chapter mockery, they wisely decided to shorten their version, and add in some clever new ideas -- including the Vampire Prom. And Belle Goose's habit of squeezing grapefruit onto her skin, to achieve the perfect aroma that will drive Edwart Mullen and leeches wild.

And I've clearly got food on the brain. I blame my wisdom tooth extraction on Wednesday, which has limited my food intake to ice cream, scrambled eggs and very mushy pasta. I've been daydreaming about apples and burritos and foods that require, you know, chewing.

So it's only appropriate that this week's giveaway is local chef Duff Goldman's new book, "Ace of Cakes." Word on the street is that Atomic Books was packed for the launch Tuesday, so here's a great way to get the book without standing in line. (Of course, it also won't be signed. Sorry.)

Oh, and who won "The Book of Genesis Ilustrated by R. Crumb?" That'd be Jason. Congratulations, and I hope you enjoy it!

Now tell us what you're reading!

Congratulations to Jason! I'm reading The Magicians by Lev Grossman and I'm really struggling with it.

I'm reading The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. It's not nearly as good as her previous book The Night Watch, which was one of my favorite reads of the year.

I've been reading Low Impact Man... (written by the blogger of the same title) and The Big Dirt Nap which is a mystery whose author's name I don't remember. They're both perfectly acceptable, but not books that I'll put on my Memorable list.

I'm near the end of Noah's Compass, the new Anne Tyler book. I had The Magicians on my TBR pile, but may hold off until I get a better report from Kathy.

I just finished Alice Munro's latest story collection, Too Much Happiness, which was wonderful. Now I'm reading Trailer Girl and Other Stories by Terese Svoboda. So far, so good--very Southern Gothic.

Just finishing I Hadn't Meant To Tell You This by Jacqueline Woodson..a great book

I'm reading SUNFLOWERS! I also need to finish up THE MAGICIANS this weekend.

I'm reading The Worst Hard Time by Timoty Egan, an account of the Dust Bowl that focuses on the families that stayed and endured it. Harrowing stuff.

I just finished the new Postsecret book. Thanks guys!

I'm reading "Bones" by Jonathan Kellerman. It's a detective story about bodies found in a marsh. I'm enjoying it. I hadn't read Kellerman in a while. The librarians at the Tuckahoe Library gave me the book as a present for reading a scary story at the Halloween party at the library on Monday night. The scary story I read was "Get Yourself a Face" (my story about a Mafia princess who buys herself a new face and a lot of trouble). In case anyone is interested, the link to the story is on my website: http://farrellysistersonline.com/short_stories.htm

After doing so much reading on my Kindle, it's nice to have a print book in my hands again.

Happy Halloween!

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, fabulous book for writers. Just finished Therese Walsh's Last Will of Moira Leahy. Great women's fiction book.

Happy Halloween!

About the blogger
Dave Rosenthal came to The Baltimore Sun as a business reporter in 1987 and now is the Maryland Editor. He reads a wide range of books (but never as many as he'd like), usually alternating between non-fiction and fiction. Some all-time favorites: A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole; Wind, Sand and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupery; and anything by Calvin Trillin or John McPhee. He belongs to a book club with a Jewish theme.
