Freebie Friday
Happy wet, dark and chillly Friday, everybody! Looks like autumn is creeping up on us.
I would like to thank Dave, who did a fantastic job covering for Freebie Friday. No vacation can get in the way of free stuff, right?
And so, the winner of "Song Yet Sung" is a parent! Looks like you'll get a headstart on our One Maryland One Book conversation next month. Or, you'll just get the chance to read a great book! Congrats!
Meanwhile, I just started "Murder at Longbourn," by Marylander Tracy Kiely. The Austen references are a bit too heavy-handed, even for a Janeite like me, but I'm enjoying the quirky characters. And I'm almost guaranteed a happy ending, if Kiely follows through with her "Pride and Prejudice" inspiration. I love it when things turn out A-OK.
What do we offer you today? How about Audrey Niffenegger's "Her Fearful Symmetry," a creepy ghost story set in London. Fans of "The Time Traveler's Wife" will enjoy the strong characterizations, and those who didn't enjoy Niffenegger the first time around can be assured that familial bonds, not true love, is the focus of this story. Also, the cover's all pretty and shiny.
If you're in the mood for fiction RIGHT NOW, tune to The Signal at noon and 7 p.m. today to hear local author Eric Goodman read "Futures." Of course, the podcast is also available for you anytime.
So, what are you reading?
ALERT! I completely forgot about the second book! Our second winner is Helen! Congratulations to you, as well! I hope you enjoy this beautifully written book.

Just started "Brighly Burning" by Mercedes Lackey last night. She writes some really great fantasy novels with strong, interesting characters. This book up for freebees sounds good... I like ghost stories, though I'm not really keen on seeing "Time Traveler's Wife"... is the book better?

Now I am just starting Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay

I am currently reading PREY by the late Michael Crichton. Possibly the best book ever written about killer nanoparticles gone wild!

What a coincidence! I am actually in he middle of "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger. It is a book club pick and so far I am enjoying the read.

I'm reading Carole Radziwill's _What Remains_ about JFK Jr.'s and her husband, Anthony Radziwill's, untimely deaths. A little Kennedy obsessed, and it's feeding that.

What a coincidence! I'm actually reading The Time Travelers Wife now. I'm about 1/4 of the way in but it seems pretty good so far.

Right now I'm reading two books - "Loving Frank" and "What Remains," both for my book club. Both are very good reads so far, and I have a feeling the latter will leave me in tears.

I'm currently reading Resistance, the true story of Agnes Humbert, a prominent figure in the French Resistance to the German Occupation. Obviously not a Maryland-er, but fascinating nonetheless.

Just finished up a re-read of The Haunting of Hill House for my book club, looking forward to the discussion! Next I think I might re-read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books. I'm on a comfort re-reading kick!
Currently I might be re-reading, um, a certain young adult vampire book that would probably get me disqualified, or laughed at.

I'm currently reading Ralph Waldo Emerson's Nature & Divinity School Address for a grad school class. I wish I could read something a bit more entertaining, but duty calls!

I'm reading The Way to the Cats, a novel about aging by Israeli author Yehoshua Kenaz. This is the second book (of two I've read) by this author that has impressed me.

I'm reading Miranda Weiss' "Tide, Feather, Snow," a memoir about a young Maryland suburbanite who moves to Homer, Alaska. It's a nice portrait of the state's beauty and quirkiness; rather than a bare-all personal story.

I'm nearly through Milton Knif's Terry and the Pirates vol 5. I just can't get enough of these WW2 newspaper comics – the propaganda is just awesome

Just finished Wicked. Working through Riders of the Purple Sage, Atlas Shrugged, and Pillars of the Earth, simultaneously... Big undertaking but so far, worth it!
I do have to say that I picked up Time Traveller's Wife right when it came out, and have read it numerous times since.... It is starting to get worn.

I love the Time Traveler's Wife. I can't wait to read her new book. I'm currently reading The Girl Who Played with Fire. I wasn't in love with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but the book left me hanging enough with characters backstory that I'm reading the next book to find out more.

I am reading a giant, gorgeous pile of kids and YA books, reviewing them for the Newark Star-Ledger.
I'm curious about how Niffenegger can possibly follow up The Time Traveler's Wife, which I loved. Whatever it is, it'll be gorgeously written, and will stun me in at least five different plot points.

I'm reading Burnt Shadows by Kamila Shamsie right now! Haunting! And speaking of haunting I can't wait for Audrey Niffenegger's newest book! I just loved The Time Travelers Wife!

I'm indulging my love for Star Trek with "Star Trek: Deep Space-The Soul Key." It's a novel set after the series. Now I just wish the economic downturn would clear up so Pocket books will publish more Trek!

I'm reading Jane Smiley's new young-adult novel "The Georges and the Jewels," and it's good so far. How could it not be -- it's Jane Smiley. I just finished "A Gate at the Stairs" (a beautifully written book that's a great example of how good a really good book can be).
