Jenna Hager (former Jenna Bush) joins Today show
See where a love of reading can get you? Jenna Hager, a rookie reading instructor with the city schools, has been hired by the Today show as a reporter. The Federal Hill resident will contribute stories about once a month on topics such as education.
Isn't it great that a prominent TV show would reach out to an altruistic young woman working to help kids read?
Oh, wait, someone just told me that Ms. Hager also is known as Jenna Bush, a former First Daughter.
So NBC was more interested in ratings than getting kids to read -- and turn off their TV sets? I'm aghast.

The decision to hire Jenna Hager is appalling and an affront to so many different groups of persons. It is certainly a slap in the face of young persons who work hard to earn their rightful place in the job market. Much has been written on how tough it must be to grow up in the spotlight of famous parents, yet Jenna (and sister Barbara) had so many positive opportunities that most kids lack. Both girls consciously choose to skirt rules that most young people must follow. Unlike inner city kids who successfully resist the temptations of drugs and crime that surround them, the Bush girls choose the wild side. Unlike kids whose youthful indiscretions and record of arrest plague them in employment, Hager is able to waltz into a great job.
The hiring decision is an affront to millions of unemployed Americans who now must face long employment lines as a result of the mistakes of the administration of an undeserving president who was elected because of his Bush name. These persons seeking employment get no such breaks in landing jobs.
Retaining the younger Bush is an affront to the journalists whom she now wishes to join. Jenna repeatedly showed extreme contempt for journalists through such actions as sticking her tongue out at reporters. One might only ask if this is the type of “presence” noted by Jim Bell, executive producer of the Today Show. Competent reporters work without the help of ghost writers.
Lastly, a Bush presence will be an affront to viewers of the Today Show who do not wish to be regularly reminded of all the negative news stories and injustices of the Bush years. American voters recently rejected a Bush proxy as well as another candidate with family connection to a former president. As we Americans work hard toward a brighter tomorrow, we should not be insulted by Today’s insistence on continuation of this dark form of favoritism.

I second everything ray said above. I have watched the Today show for 20+ years, and will now switch to GMA.

I basically agree w the above- however-we can't blame Jenna for her father- Now- would she take the opportunity of such a pulpit to talk about something meaningful in education?
What about the sedgregation in Baltimore schools? How about reverse bussing?
I note that her mother- Laura- is part of the speaking series being sponsored by Stevenson U at the Meyerhoff.
One would be tempted to boycott such "hirings" or pay offs of not necessarily accredited "personalities"-but one realises it's the way our cronyistic society works.
But Jenna and Laura will be harmless- and may even say something helpful- (I'm sure they'd like to live down the reps their male relative has given them).
If some alledged "personality" like Glenn Beck or even local "personalities" are hateful- shouldn't their sponsors be boycotted?
Or some one stand up at Ms. Bush's talk and ask her what do you think of your husband as a war criminal.
But the fraternity of complicity usually forbids it.

Reality can't be discussed without mentioning that there is no way this girl would have been placed on this show if she was not the daughter of the grandest idiot.
She has had 8 years to bring good to the world, and instead decided on underage drinking and using her name to circumvent consequences that the rest of our adolescents must face head on.
Whatever you think of Keith Olberman on MSNBC, it has been refreshing recentlty to see him bashing Obama for mistakes he believes he is making. He has even suggested that another Democrat mount a challenge in 2012.
Conservatives would like to say that people on MSNBC are no different from FOX NEWS, but you would never hear anyone of FOX NEWS criticize President Bush on anything that was actually important. Definitely not something as fundamental as whether to challenge his second term.
The point of the MSNBC / FOX NEWS comparison is that many paint both sides in the media as being as deeply partisan as the politicians they cover. However, that is simply not true. Some are based in facts, whether those facts suit them or not.
Be weary of those who always come down on the same team for every issue. Examples of this idiocy would be Elizabeth Hasslebeck and now Jenna Bush. The unfortunate thing is that these shows are so highly rated, J.Bush will increase this even further, and so many people begin to take the things they say as fact. Fact, despite the fact that they are constantly proven to be lying or mistaken.
