Happy Bloomsday!

james joyce bloomsdayJune 16 is the day to celebrate James Joyce's Ulysses, by marking the date that protagonist Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus wandered around Dublin. It's also a convenient excuse to dress up, get drunk and eat various organs. As James Quinn of the James Joyce Centre was quoted in one news report: "People wander around and turn up at locations throughout the day for events like the lunch that Bloom had of a gorgonzola sandwich and glass of burgundy."

Sounds like Dublin's version of Honfest. So hoist a Guinness or Harp or burgundy for great literature today!

Any Bloomsday events going on here in Baltimore? Any readings?

It is 'BLOOMSDAY' today --- from JAMES JOYCE 'ULYSEES' --- "The summer evening had begun to hold the world in its mysterious embrace." The appearance of this novel serialized in the 'Little Review' would change the 'obscenity laws' for all time. So quaff a beverage to the magnificent Jew and Dubliner LEO BLOOM today!!!

B, I haven't heard of any events locally. I thought the James Joyce pub in Harbor East would be a likely spot, but the only nod to Bloomsday there is $3 James Joyce Amber.

Thanks for checking, Dave. The James Joyce has had readings from the book in the past, but I gather not enough interest to do it this year.

About the bloggers
While she always preferred The Hardy Boys to Nancy Drew, Nancy Knight grew up reading nearly everything she could get her hands on, including a probably unhealthy amount of R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike, with the obligatory Jane Austen thrown in. She'll still read just about anything you put in front of her, especially the funny or weird. She lives in the city with her books, cat and drum set.

Dave Rosenthal came to The Baltimore Sun as a business reporter in 1987 and now is an assistant managing editor and Sunday editor. He reads a wide range of books (but never as many as he'd like), usually alternating between non-fiction and fiction. Some all-time favorites: A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole; Wind, Sand and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupery; and anything by Calvin Trillin or John McPhee. He belongs to a book club with a Jewish theme.
