A guy who likes Stephenie Meyer's Twilight? Seriously

twilight by stephenie meyerAs part of a new series called My Guilty Pleasure, NPR is asking witers to "talk about the books they've loved only secretly — until now." Yesterday, Brad Meltzer confessed his love for Twilight, the mega-hit vampire series that appeals mainly to teenage fangirls. (For a sampling of their Twi-mania, just read some of the nearly 500 comments on this post.)

I thought I had exposed myself in March by acknowledging that I enjoyed Twilight -- despite its shallow writing and lack of drama. (I also noted that I had my wife check out the book from the library, so I wouldn't be seen as a creep.) But Meltzer goes much further.

Here's an excerpt from his confession: "I love this story of the gawky, awkward girl who falls in love with the brooding vampire. And I love that she can't get sexual with said vampire because when her blood gets pumping, it'll send him into a frenzy and he'll kill her. (How's that for a prophylactic?)

"I love hearing the dark secret histories of how the other vampires were turned into vampires. And I love when Edward gets all huffy with Jacob the werewolf — oh my God, I'm on the verge of writing fan-fic here — but again, in case you missed it, I love this story."

The only thing that makes suspicious is that Meltzer says he doesn't love or understand sports. So I question his macho credentials. Still, I praise his courage in coming clean.

Hello,I'm December. I'm an 11-year-old girl that is a huge fan of the Twlight Saga!!! If you haven't already read Twlight, New Moon, any of them you should. It kind of seems boring in the begining, but you need the information in the begining to understand the book. I know you are thinking, "Why should we listen to an eleven-year-old?",but I've read all four multiple times. And I can't wait until the movie New Moon comes out November 20, 2009.

I LOVE the Twilight Saga!!! They are a must read for anyone who loves anything that has to do with romance. Stephenie Meyer did a fabulous job of writing Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. I usually can't read a certain book, let alone an entire series, more than once,(I'm the type of person who likes to try something new and then move onto the next thing) but the Twilight Saga is my one exception. I have read them all a couple times. I would just like to say, thank you Stephenie Meyer, for writing these books, even if it did come to you in a dream. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

It gets kind of annoying when people keep calling Twilight a series for Teens. It may have been originally marketed that way but I venture to say more adults read the books than teens now. In fact, my niece is a senior and neither she or any of her friends have read Twilight. Yet, I can count two dozen of my friends ranging in age from 25-45 who are hooked on the series. It's insulting the the large group of adult readers to constantly be told Twilight's a "teen story".

While she always preferred The Hardy Boys to Nancy Drew, Nancy Knight grew up reading nearly everything she could get her hands on, including a probably unhealthy amount of R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike, with the obligatory Jane Austen thrown in. She'll still read just about anything you put in front of her, especially the funny or weird. She lives in the city with her books, cat and drum set.

Dave Rosenthal came to The Baltimore Sun as a business reporter in 1987 and now is an assistant managing editor and Sunday editor. He reads a wide range of books (but never as many as he'd like), usually alternating between non-fiction and fiction. Some all-time favorites: A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole; Wind, Sand and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupery; and anything by Calvin Trillin or John McPhee. He belongs to a book club with a Jewish theme.
