Stephenie Meyer's Twilight banned
The combination of Stephenie Meyer, vampires/werewolves and the Mormon church always seemed an odd one to me. Now comes news that Deseret Book, a store owned by the Mormon church, has taken Meyer's immensely popular Twilight off its shelves. Same for the other books in the series: New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.
According to a story in the Salt Lake Tribune, the bulk of Deseret Book's business comes from the sale of religious titles. And it apparently doesn't matter that Meyer is arguably the most famous Mormon author -- she graduated from Brigham Young University and is a member of the church.
A Deseret Book spokeswoman sent the Tribune a statement by e-mail. It read: "Like any retailer, our purpose is to offer products that are embraced and expected by our customers. When we find products that are met with mixed review, we typically move them to special order status."
I checked the store's Web site yesterday for any works by Meyer, and did find The Host, which is aimed at adults. But no sign of the other blockbusters.

You did a great job on those stories. I Like them a lot. i going to reread them. I think you should keep going on with the books and until Jacob get married or something Becase your writing is wounderful.

I think the issue here is that the Twilight series is not a religious text, nor was it ever intended to be so. It shouldn't be surprising that Deseret Book is not still selling the series. In fact, I am surprised it sold the books at all. Look at the work of Orson Scott Card. The only works by Card (also a Mormon author) available on the website are his religious works. His Sci-Fi novels aren't available, nor should they be.

If the store is truly aimed at religious fare, then so be it. But if it has "The Host," obviously it's just looking for a reason to get rid of Twilight Tweens.

SKD, like you, I give a lot of leeway to stores that are religious in nature. I'd be much more perturbed if a Borders bookstore or a library pulled Meyer's book (as if that would ever happen).
Meyer, meanwhile, has been busy with another matter -- debunking Internet rumors that she was being sued for stealing the Twilight story from a college roomie.
Here's a posting from her website: "I am not being sued. No one has contacted me or my publisher to inform either of us that I'm being sued. I never had a roommate named Heidi. There is no professor in the BYU English department named Dr. Peter Benton (though there is a character on ER by that name). And most of all, I began writing Twilight exactly the way I've told people in countless interviews and events for the past six years: I had a cool dream, I wrote it down, writing it down was really fun, so I kept writing until I had a whole book. ...I guess the moral of the story is that—big surprise—you can't believe everything you read on the internet."

The Twilight series is amazing. It's their customers' loss if the store doesn't carry the books. Absolutely amazing!

The Twilight series is the most addictive thing I've done in my life. My 7 yr old daughter can't get enough of Edward. And didn't Deseret Book sell Harry Potter? Maybe I'm wrong, but not everything they sell in necessarily "religious". Although intentions may be good, there is also a lot of fiction.

i m delighted by this. it's about time that the church took stand here. aside from being very badly written, full of purple prose and basic grammatical errors the books are intensly anti-christian in terms of eternal life on earth, bigomy, incest, abuse, domestic violence, child grooming, pedophillia and cross-species breeding. all of which is heavily frowned upon in the bible.
i don't know how god feels about her presenting these things as attractive and desirable, but she's definatley going to hell for her awful writing.

Seems like some people are going to hate anything that goes against what they assume is right. So to them just dont read it, after all it is fictional ( remember). I personally love all the books in the Twilight Saga. Stephenie does her job well, she draws you in, so you feel apart of whats happening. I hope she continues on with the saga. GREAT JOB STEPHENIE.

Interesting that Stephenie Meyer is a Mormon. I didn't know that. Now I want to read Twilight, although I had no interest in it before. In general, bans by churches seem to create more business for the banned.
Posted by: Gail Farrelly | April 28, 2009 3:57 PM
im sure the church has good reason to remove the books from the shelves of their book stores, although people may not feel the same way. Does it really matter if you cant find the book at ONE store? there are also a number of other book stores that sell TWILIGHT, NEW MOON, ECLIPSE AND BREAKING DAWN. so dont dwell on this not so delightfull circumstance. im sure you would be better off finding a book store that holds the copies of the Wonderful books. ANDDDDD - to Tracy . your comment (although i see the intension) was not needed!! everyone is intitled to their own opinion, but if you have nothing nice to say DON`T say it at all ....

I think Stephanie is an amazing author and writes with great detail I love all of the books and can't get enough of them. I can't wait till the New Moon movie comes out.
They are the greatest books out!!!!!

@claro...I wonder where you are getting your information from??? God would not denounce His love for Stephenie or anyone else who used their imagination to entertain others. You are so wrong about what you said was in book...there is no real anit-Christian reference...i mean he is worried about her soul & his own. He and his family protect & do not kill humans. Not sure where the bigomy comes from...let alone the incest, or abuse...domestic violence??? please was a fight...never been in one??? please.... Child grooming??? Where does it groom a child in any of the books???? and for what??? Pedophilla??? Where??? NO ONE at any given time has any kind of sexual feelings for any child in these books...nor do they have naked bad pics of any child or nudity even mentioned in this series. You need a reality check. Try reading them before you judge. Cross-species breeding??? oh please...there is no real vampires or werewolves!!!! You were really pushing to get that one out!!! lmao!!!!!!! THIS IS A WORK OF FICTION!!!! NONE OF IT IS REAL!!!!
So before you try to condem someone to Hell...you should think of that. Let alone Judge not lest thee be judged.
So on a positive note...I really hope Stephenie writes a spinoff of some sort to this series. After all...she did leave it sorda open. With the Volturi & with Nahuel's father, let alone Nahuel.
and with the way Renesmee grows. And of course her & Jacob, and of course their relationship with Edward & Bella and so on....they are like part of the family now...and I wanna know more!!! lol
Posted by: grannynut | April 28, 2009 9:24 PM
Okay a religious book store is not selling Twilight, after how many years these books have been out? Sounds like the store is just needing some publicity!!!
And if stephanie is reading this. Your books are awesome! And you are not going to hell..I don't know good religious person who would wish such a thing on another soul. YOU ROCK!

Twilight encourages young women to accept abusive behavior, condone a lifestyle that includes killing and her message to leave your husband because you're 'bored' is outrageous. This book is dangerous.
Posted by: Alice | April 29, 2009 6:24 AM
Alice that posted above: Please get a life! It is a book, just a book! The book is not dangerous at all. If you think this book is dangerous you must be living under a rock. The world has bigger problems then a fiction book. The books are amazing, just truly amazing. So don't hate someone else success just becuase you do not agree with their view.
Posted by: Kelly | April 29, 2009 8:21 AM
actually i agree with claro.
edward is very abusive and controlling, and bella is weak and pathetic. if this were the real world he would be in prison and she wold be in hospital.
edward has all the markers of a future domestic abuser, and the fact that he is controlling to the point of stopping her seeing her friends and alienating her from her family say alot.
as for child grooming - as a father breaking dawn scared me. the sole explanation for imprinting is to pass on the genes, so the entire process is sexually focused. it doesn't matter that there is not physical abuse, the implication there is that that baby with the ridiculous name will be his future mate. therefore it is sexual.
and tracy - if you are letting your daughter look to edward as the perfect example of man then she will probably end up with a guy just like him - and when he puts her in hospital you remember that you were warned here. guys like edward are so far removed from perfect that it worries me people can't see it. it might seem romantic on the page, but stalking and abuse is not the slightest bit romantic, and in the real world the trasition from being overly protective to lifting a hand can happen in the blink of an eye.
I think this store did the right thing in pulling these books off the shelf. The author has no morals at all, if she did she wouldn't be presenting these things as attractive. No matter how much you tart up abuse it's still abuse.
I think they give the wrong message to young girls, although from readin this board there are a few grown women who reall need to take a look at themselves too.
I applaud the stores owner and hope that more chains follow suit.
Posted by: alanalan | April 29, 2009 8:56 AM
Having read some of the comments above, I have to say that I agree with the decision to remove it. After all, it isn't a religious book.
It's actually pretty anti-religious. I have to agree also with the point made about certain themes like suicide and the interspecies thing, not to mention the whole drinking blood (albeit not human) these things are mentioned specifically in the Bible as being wrong and I have a hard time accepting them in this romantised way.
Although they aren't terribly well written, they are by no means the worst books I have ever read. That said, thier popularity among teens and young adults who hail them as great works of art makes me worry about the future of literature.
If you want good books with religious themes try Narnia. But the best place for Twilight book is in the discount section.
Despite what educational authorities would have you belive - It DOES matter WHAT you read.

I found this article through a link on an Anti-Twilight page and commenting on this is difficult for me.
Although I hate Twilight I am trying not to let that influence my thoughts on this particular discussion, after all, the topic is about banning it from a religious bookshop, not whether it is any good.
Although part of me read this article and thought, 'what's the big deal' part of me was secretly pleased.
There are alot of comments above about the contents of the books, so I dont' reall need to go into those, although I will say that I agree with some of them, the general quality of riting is poor. In fact when run through the Microsoft ability checker Twilight had a reading age equal to that of a seven year old child.
Since the books are not religious I think the store was right.
I think the books have been over-hyped to the point of the ridiculous considering the woman can't write worth a darn. It strikes me as a publisher pouring money into something that isn' too taxing on the brain for the semi-literate masses incapable of reading beyond a first grade level.
Deseret Book - I salute you.

Not seeing where Edward is abusing...he never once hurts Bella he tries to get her away from him. I have been in an abusive relationship...this isn't one. As for controlling...after all his years he has found someone and does not want her in danger...he saves her from a car accident...he saves her from others of his kind that are mean....but number one thing here...THIS IS FICTION FOLKS!!!! GET A FRIGGIN GRIP!!!! You have never read any fiction books at all???? never???? I think you would be lying if you said you hadn't. There are no real vamps...no real werewolves...no Santa Claus...no Easter Bunny...there is a God and he is AWESOME. Do I feel I am goin to hell for reading and enjoying this series??? NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! know why??? CAUSE I KNOW IT ISN'T REAL!!!!! If this series does anything...it promotes real love. In a weird way...but love. The love Bella has for Edward...is like the love I have for my husband. I would give my life for him...would you your spouse??? That is what this book is truly promoting. Oh and who commited suicide??? Don't recall that. And imprinting...no differen't than love at first site duh. If you truly love someone...and they don't return it the way you want...you be what you can to them...either a best friend, a casual one or a protector. You never know when they might return your love they way you want. Doesn't have to be sexual at all. The way I understood the books...the girl had the choice to walk away if she wanted...not a permanant thing...but they chose not too...but again...NO SUCH THING AS IMPRINTING!!!!!!! geesh!!!! FICTION FOLKS!!!!! I am a christian...and darn proud of it...my God is a loving God...He knows that this is just entertainment. WE ALL have done something...seen something...READ something...I am sure He did NOT like...but ya know what???? We are human...and as such...not perfect...hence reason why He gave us His son...to forgive us our sins. If someone is taking this book literally then it is up to a parent...friend or someone else to say HEY!!!! This is not real!!!! THis is imagination!!!!! I mean who as a child didn't wish they had superpowers of some sort??? be real...its called imagination...and believe it or not...guess who gave us that??? Who????? Can you say that louder??? Yep that right God!!!!! Most normal people do NOT act on their imagination...those that do are disturbed. Which God even forgives them...if they ask HIm too... through Jesus. that too...is in the Bible. one sin is not greater than another...We all should have to ask forgiveness on a reg. basis...cause we all sin everyday...I don't condemn no one...not saying I haven't...but...I try not to...everyone has their own opinion which is free will that He gave us. Also is just our right. So since that is true...i try to look at everyones comments with an open mind...but when it comes right down to thinking you are the better person...that just isn't right and gets my goat. The store banned the books...fine...do to non religious...and fiction...fine...then they should ban all the non religious...and even the fiction books be it religious or not...cause after all...they are imagination tooo...

I am a devout Christian....It's FICTION!
It's not good or bad for you! People are drawn to the books because of the devotion the "characters" have for each other. We are all searching for that in life.As a Christian, you know there is only one place that comes from and that is Christ! Its a good read! I think it is a good to reach the people who actually think they are vampires(and there is alot of youth that are drawn to that)but that they promote the love for others,no matter race, color, creed.
Posted by: Stephanie | April 29, 2009 10:45 AM
Why do people care? Deseret Books sells primarily religious books. I never once thought of going to my local Christian bookstore to find books like the Twilight series. I'm sure the store also does not sell books by Steven King, Clive Barker or Dean Koontz.
One more thing to those who wish to comment. If you would like to appear intelligent, please do not use text speak or misspell words when you are posting a comment.

About all the people who said the Twilight saga having an anti christian background. Where exactly has that come from? Have you even read the books from a view other than religious?
being a christian myself, i can appreciate the book store feeling what they do about the series but it is FICTION!!!!!!!! that's all! why can't people see that?
a lot of my friends love the series and i do too! if your reading this stephanie, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CARRY ON WRITING MIDNIGHT SUN! I LOVE THE FRIST CHAPTER!

I'm seriously hoping that Ness- Renesmee gets married and has kids and the Cullens replace the Volturi. That is a happy ending.

Some people get overly wound up about Twilight. I know I do, often.
I lothe it. Stephenie Meyer makes a total mocary of my chosen career path.
Whoever you are grannynut, you're reacting far too o.t.t. You're letting your own personal feelings cloud your judgement.
Of course Edward isn't physically abusive towards Bella (unless we count the headboard-breaking bruising sex in Breaking Dawn) but he demeans her all the time, openly laughs at her, telling her she's being ridiculous and stupid. He refuses to allow her to see her friends, going as far as for his sister to kidnap her and in addition, removes the engine from her car. This is controlling behaviour. When Edward leaves, Bella is nothing but pathetic and catatonic. She literally becomes nothing without her man and goes as far as to throw herself from a cliff. It is masked over as an attempt at 'extreme sports' but the fact remains... she threw herself off a cliff. And then Edward threatens to commit vampire suicide as well! Not to forget that Esme jumped off a cliff when her son died. The woman DOES glamourisde suicide within these books.
And I don't have to be a devout Christian to know that suicide is frowned upon by the Church.
In addition, what kind of loving husband wants to force his wife to have an abortion against her will and then try and pimp her out to her best friend?
Child grooming? Quill and Claire anyone? A 16 year old boy falling in love with a toddler? Sure, it may not be sexual there, but they know, one day, it will be. Quill only puts up with princess parties because he knows one day that Claire will love him in return and give him little wolf children. And Jacob falls in love with a new-born baby. He'll be hanging around, watching her grow. He gives her a promiss ring. When she's only just been born!
It wouldn't be quite so bad if she hadn't said Imprinting was a means to further the wolf genes. To allow the wolves to find the perfect mate to produce the strongest offspring.
That, my friends, is about sex and these girls, whether they know it or not, will one day be shacking up with the same boys that changed their nappies.
I feel the decision was right to remove Twilight. The themes are rather anti-Christian. It doesn't matter if the book itself is real or not, fantasy or not but children, especially the young adults that Stephenie Meyer's works are geared towards, are highly impressionable and if they consume these books and believe them to be acurate portrayals of true love and romance, I worry greatly for the next generation of relationships.
Although I do feel that banning a book with acheive nothing. People are much more likely to want to read a book when they know they're breaking rules.
Reverse psychology and all that jazz.

I hate to repost, but I see so diffrently than so many others posters here that I have to try and explain what this saga means to me.
First, I wan't to congratulate Meyer's on basically rewriting "Romeo and Juliet" with a "Happily ever (and ever)after" twist. A true monument to the fundamental basis of all Christian beliefs that love overcomes all obstacles. And to me, the series is a testament that love can overcome lust, bigotry, jealousy, persecution and more, ("thirst" essentially encompassing everything that makes us more animal than human).
I'm sorry for anyone that doesn't believe that way, but this is a very heart warming story for me.
On the other hand, I don't think this story belongs in a Christian book store any more or less than the "Chronicles of Narnia".

I bought all the books and read them all in less then 1 month. Once I stsrted reading them it was very hard to put it down for anything else. Now I'm re-reading them all again! I bought the DVD & the soundtrack the day they came out. I love Stephenie's imagination! These books are wonderful! I haven't actually read a book for years and this series is amazing! There isn't anything out there better then the Twilight series. I wish that she would have finished Midnight Sun but someone ruined that for the rest of us. I sure hope however did that loves hell b/c that's were sinners go! I want to know what happens after the happily ever after...after Bella & Edward raise Renesmee? Does she stay with Jacob? Does the Volturi ever come back? Breaking Dawn was so good, but I want her to continue the series!

It amazes me how often people try to use the words 'it's only fiction, it's not real'.
That's not the point. 'The Satanic Verses' was just fiction, not real, but it earned Salman Rushdie a death sentance.
I bet you won't see it in a religious bookstore.
I think Deseret did the right thing. The best way to deal with Twilight is to ignore it. It's a stain on good literature.
Posted by: twilightisstupid | April 30, 2009 4:27 AM
As a mormon, i read all the books one after the other, unable to put them down. I read them as novels, not as religious books, just for sheer pleasure. I don't think Steph Meyer intended them to teach a lesson, impart wisdom or offend anyone, just simply to be read and enjoyed.
Posted by: Linda Beattie | April 30, 2009 8:42 AM
Why is it when an author keeps things in perspective theres always an issue? Edward and Bella meet fall in love (and amazingly get through all the obstacles) and eventually get married and has a child. Isn't this the way its suppose happien? We all know the vampire and werewolfe are fictional but the message of morals is there. Thats more credit I can give most writers. I think Stephenie did a wonderful job and I hope there will be more to this saga.

Why is it that nearly all of the Twilight fans I come across on the internet cannot spell and-or punctuate to save their lives?
Posted by: NoniBerryJuice | April 30, 2009 6:17 PM
Why do things always have to come down to fight?
I neither like nor dislike the books. they are badly written and unedited, but they aren't offensive.
That said, I have noticed on intrnet forums that it's always the fans who can't debate, they always turn it into an arguement, they just don't seem capable of accepting that anyone else has an opinion.
I have noticed that those who don't like the books, they call themselves 'Antis' (i think) generally put forward good arguements and are willing to discuss. But they are generally shouted down by fans with the same statements, like:
1. It's only fiction, it's not real.
2. It's not stalking, it's love!
3. He's not abusive, he never hits her.
4. He only does it because he cares.
5. It's story, it doesn't have to have a plot.
6. Stephenie is an amazing writer and you're just jealous.
I've already lost count of how many times I have read the above on this page alone.
There are some fans out there, and several on this page, who are not painting themselves in a good light, the term Crazy Lady comes to mind.
Personally I couldn't care less if I never saw or heard about Twilight again, but I don't have any strong desire for it to disapear off the face of the planet either.
This discussion is not about the dubious quality of the books, or even the content, but rather should they belong in a religious bookstore.
And the answer to that is no.

It's a work of fiction, it shouldn't be in a religious book shop.

Wow, the first comment under the story is actually causing me pain. I'm horrified to think that there is a kid out there old enough to surf the 'net but still THAT illiterate. Dianne Gaerlan, I'm gratified to hear that you can, indeed, read. Because that is the saddest piece of writing I have ever seen. Stay in school, kiddo.

I find it ironic that the Mormon church would object to anything SciFi since their religion is based on men getting their own planets in space after death.
Posted by: trystme | May 5, 2009 1:06 PM
I think it's really funny that all the comments about Stephenie Meyer's "terrible writing" are full of horrible spelling and grammar mistakes. Some lesson about a mote and a beam comes to mind. I think those people are just jealous that they didn't think of it first and get rich and famous. Besides, they're only saying that because they heard that Stephen King said it. If you want to talk about someone who got famous despite being a terrible writer, why not talk about Clive Cussler or Nicholas Sparks? Or Stephen King's wife, for that matter, who writes really horrible, trashy sex books?
For all those who see something "dangerous" in the books--you're being absolutely ridiculous. The entire Old Testament is X-rated. It's full of incest, abuse, murder--you name it. I guess you better ban your kids from reading the Bible too. And the really scary thing about that is it isn't even fiction. Enough said.
Posted by: Wendy | May 7, 2009 3:53 PM
I applaud Deseret Book for their decision, though I wish they'd made it long ago.
Abuse comes in many forms. Not all of it fictional. Edward is abusive and controling. Bella is no better, constantly pressuring Edward for sex, thus showing she has no respect for him, or for herself. And no matter how lonely a man is, if he respects a woman, he will not be overbearing or controling or over protective.
In answer to the argument that it's JUST fiction, the answer to that, is no, it's not JUST fiction. Fictional books serve a need. Why do people read for hours and hours about characters that don't exist? They fill a need in us, and help us establish our own internal values, and our sense of right and wrong. Most books help readers see people struggle and strive, and ultimately overcome problems, and the readers of such books like them because the books help us, their readers, understand how better to deal with our own real life problems.
This book, and the others that precede it sell the idea to people that they don't need to struggle and strive and make themselves into better people in order to deserve a reward. People who buy into such thinking become angry and demanding in real life when hot men or cool cars, or good grades or other sorts of rewards, be they whatever they are, don't just drop into their laps. Dangerous fuel to add to a society that is already dangerously complacent.
Posted by: L. Evans | May 9, 2009 1:22 AM
Ok the books are fiction but at the same time they should not be in a Religious book store because the books go against everything in the bible.
The books are men't to be entertainment,
They should be should be sold in barns and nobles borders etc
but not in a religious book store but also in that case no other book lik twilight should be sold at that book store like chronicles of narnia or harry potter....
Stephenie Meyer wrote her books for entertainment not for anything religious or to give morals.... even though her book does have a moral,,,
and the books are fiction i dont know why everyone is getting all worked up on it,,,,,
Should they be sold at religious book stores no
did Stephenie write her books for anything religious no
the books were writing for fun and entertainment and at first the books were writing for her own purposes she wasnt even planing on publishing it so there ok.....
now everyone can relax =)

So - I am an adult. I read all the books, and saw the first movie. I liked the books, didn't like the movie. The movie seemed too sexually oriented and intense - particularly because it is being marketed to tweens and teens. Having said these things, I remember thinking that Edward's character did seem WAY too controlling, and emotionally abusive to Bella's character. I am concerned that the tweens and teens are going to make excuses for someone that mistreats them just like Bella was doing.
I actually enjoyed the fictional aspects of the books - superpowers an all. I wish it wasn't marketed to children though. Children have a hard time seeing through what is really fictional - more life experience is needed.
Good eye, Deseret Book! I agree that the series should be found somewhere else - a mainstream bookstore.

The TWILIGHT series is the only books besides school that I have ever really gotten into. I love these book and Really wish Stephanie would finish her 5th book Edwards point of view because the first 264 pages are fantastic. I am addicted to ready these books and cant wait for the movie. This is a fictional book and real everyone get over it. Its fun to read and imagine. The love story was fantastic.

I'm absolutely apalled at the ridiculous lack of grammar and spelling skills amongst smeyer's fans.
I'm equally apalled by the the weak heroine and the emotionally abusive "hero."
Did anyone else noticed that the story lacks plot, conflict, and foreshadowing?
I read the first book because it was foisted upon me. I refuse to read the rest on the sheer principle that, were some man admit to me that he snuck into my room at night to watch me sleep, I'd slap him with a lawsuit so fast, his sparkling white and delightsome skin would singe.
Atrocious.
Good job, Deseret Books.

For those of you saying, "It's just fiction", or "There are no vamps, no witches, no undead" etc. -- I have a question: Are you calling God a liar? God specifically mentions those things here: (Deuteronomy 18)
-----------
"There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.
"For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God will drive them out before you.
-------------
What we have here is God telling you to not become involved with these forbidden things; for entertainment or any other purpose. It's pretty black and white, just like the rest of the Bible.
Ever hear of "Harry Potter" parties? Where children dress up and "practice" their witchcraft? All arranged and condoned by their parents?
Do you think this is what God is saying, or should we just ignore his laws and simply heed our own fleshly desires? You decide.
