So much for 'Angel at the Fence'

So it's happened again: The next hot memoir turned out to be a bit more fiction than non, and everyone is appalled and shocked, SHOCKED that this could happen in today's Internet culture.

Herman Rosenblat, author of Angel at the Fence, admitted Saturday that he and his wife of 50 years, the former Roma Radzicky, met in New York on a blind date, not on opposite sides of a concentration camp fence, as he wrote in his memoir about surviving Buchenwald and other concentration camps during World War II. By yesterday, his agent had denounced the fraud, and his book, which was scheduled to debut in February, was all but a dream.

According to the Associated Press, Rosenblat, 79 -- who is a Holocaust survivor -- said in a statement that “I wanted to bring happiness to people. I brought hope to a lot of people. My motivation was to make good in this world.”

Nonetheless, that love story is completely bogus, and now he's upset Oprah. Nobody upsets Oprah, buddy. Except for that James Frey guy, and look what happened to him! That's right, another book deal.

Look, I'm pretty sick of this memoir-turned-novel business, too. But maybe this is what happens in an age when you can instantly check IMDB.com to see if that guy from Independence Day is the same guy who played Jayne in Firefly. (Why yes, Adam Baldwin was the conflicted Major Mitchell in that 1996 blockbuster.)

Who knows, maybe your favorite 19th-century memoir was a complete fantasy, and you never even knew it. After all, those guys didn't have Google to worry about.

But lying about the Holocaust has some larger ramifications, as the AP details later in their story:

The damage is deep. Scholars and other skeptics as well as fellow survivors fear that Rosenblat’s fabrications will only encourage doubts about the Holocaust. “I am very worried because many of us speak to thousands of student each year,” says Sidney Finkel, a longtime friend of Rosenblat’s and a fellow survivor. “We go before audiences. We tell them a story and now some people will question what I experienced.”

I'm sure this isn't what Rosenblat intended, but there's another lesson in reality.

Perhaps Oprah should actually read the books she recommends for her book club.

Two Jewish gentleman:

Mr. Barney Frank, who serves in Congress, who knows that Freddie Mac is having problem with toxic mortgages, says there are no problems.

Mr. Herman Rosenblat, who states that he met a woman at the fence of Buchenwald and gave him fruit.

And the outrage is levied against Mr. Rosenblat...

As a Christian of the Catholic Faith, I support Mr. Rosenblat, because he in good faith wanted to teach Good from something so evil. God Almighty has blessed and protected him, and he did no harm to me.

It could be said of Mr. Frank, that he used his power and influence to thwart rightful repairs to a ballooning toxic mortgage problem, and failed to do nothing for politics sake. He indirectly may have harmed everyone, with people losing their life savings, investments. etc.

Forgive Mr. Rosenblat, and let's move on. He did time at Buchenwald for being a Jew; he paid for sins that he never commited. Get off his back!

Mr. Frank will never be punished for his commission of misleading the public and Congress about the state of affairs.

Place the blame where it needs to be placed.

Shalom and Peace to all...and may the deceased rest in peace.

Over the past months, I have received this story - always the same - in an email countless times. It's well-written. Quite a tear-jerker. I never believe any of these email stories, but a lot of people have believed this one, since there is always some sort of note assuring the recipients of the truth of the event.

In case any of you are wondering why your comments aren't being published -- and while I don't want to discourage a lively debate about this book -- let's keep it on topic. No religion bashing, please!

Logic suggests that it would be better for you to write and post whatever you are comfortable with, leaving those of us with differing views where you find us. I did not imply that Catholics are liars...I am a Catholic and I do not consider myself a liar. However, much of Catholic dogma is based in lies and deceits, and I have no problem pointing that out. It stops just short of superstition to suggest that a lie told to "justify" a supposedly greater good is morally justifiable. Mr. Rosenblat's lies have made it harder for scholars and survivors of the holocaust to be believed when they speak in public.

I haven't read this book, but have heard it is an excellent story. Retitle it as a fiction based on fact then go forward. How many books have we read and loved that just weren't exposed.
A well written book is a book worth reading. Let's look to Wall Street for the BIG falsehoods.

Grassroots campaing asking Oprah to invite Herman Rosenblat on her show one more time in future to apologize for his literary fabrication, explain why he did it, ask forgiveness

TEXT

Dateline: Cybperspace: -- I am creating a national write-in campaign here with a grassroots effort to ask Oprah to invite Herman on her show in future to apologzie, ask forgiveness, explain why he did and how and ... to move on with his life quietly and out of the spotlight.

I have already been in touch with Oprah's producers and there is a good chance this might happen. Oprah will not attack Herman on air the way she did with James Frey after his deceptions were uncovered. In this case, she will allow Herman to answer to the public, explain himself, apologize and ask forgiveness, from Oprah and the public, for his literary faux pas.

The public may leave their comments pn the blog. You may frame them as a letter to Oprah, which her producers in Chicago will read online here, and you can make your voice heard about asking Oprah to invite Herman on her show one last time to explain himself, to apologize to Oprah and the public, to ask forgiveness and to move on with this life from the point onward. We believe that he is a good man, and that he just made a wrong decision by sticking with his made-up story for so long. Now that the fabrication has been exposed by the media and his book cancelled, it is time for Oprah to invite him on her show and let him explain himself to her and to the public. I think there will be a teaching moment here for everyone, for Oprah too, for Herman, too, and for the viewing public.

I am in touch with Oprah's producers by email and phone now, and am waiting word on what they will do with this suggestion. There is no group sponsoring this write in campaign, just one lone blogger following his heart. With the support of many other people who also believe in forgiveness and moving on

Clarification of the Two Jewish Gentlemen:

Mr. Barney Frank is NOT SOLELY RESPONSIBLE for the meltdown of our financial system. It is the works of many people of many faiths who are guilty for allowing this to happen.

It wasn't my intent to infer anti-semitism. I stand with my Jewish neighbors against anti-semitism directed toward anyone of the Jewish Faith. My apologies to the Jewish communities for the inference. this wasn't my intent.

I also do not condone fraud. Misrepresentation is still wrong, just as it is in Mr. Rosenblatt's case. I still believe that he is, as well as all holocaust survivors, a national treasure to be cherished. We should never discount him because of one indiscretion.

I still stand by what I said...He paid for sins that he never committed and he did his time at Buchenwald.

Let the poor man alone. His life story is still one of priceless value, and he shouldn't be discounted.

Has anyone ever thought that it may have happened to someone else?

About the bloggers
While she always preferred The Hardy Boys to Nancy Drew, Nancy Johnston grew up reading nearly everything she could get her hands on, including a probably unhealthy amount of R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike, with the obligatory Jane Austen thrown in. She'll still read just about anything you put in front of her, especially the funny or weird. She lives in the city with her books, cat and drum set.

Dave Rosenthal came to The Baltimore Sun as a business reporter in 1987 and now is an assistant managing editor and Sunday editor. He reads a wide range of books (but never as many as he'd like), usually alternating between non-fiction and fiction. Some all-time favorites: A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole; Wind, Sand and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupery; and anything by Calvin Trillin or John McPhee. He belongs to a book club with a Jewish theme.
