Favorite bookstores
Though summer is almost over, we're still expanding our United States map of favorite bookstores. We've been adding recommendations each week, and now have more than 160 great stores from Maine to California (and lots of points between) to help your trip planning.
We've already had more than 20,000 visitors to the map, so we hope it's been helpful in finding those out-of-the-way stores that can enrich a vacation or business trip.
Thanks to several fellow bloggers, including those at the Dallas Morning-News, the National Book Critics Circle, Minds Alive On the Shelves and Write to Travel (a New Zealand-based blog for travel writers), the map continues to grow. So when you plan your next trip, check it out. (Headed to Denver for the Democratric convention? The map will guide you to The Tattered Cover, just a few blocks from the convention center.)
And when you come across a great store, let us know, and we'll add it to the map.

I would like to recommend Burke's Book Store in Memphis, TN. Before I moved to Baltimore, I was a reporter at the CBS affiliate in Memphis.
Burke's was one of my favorite places when I was living there. The book store has been around since 1875. It's everything you want in a "mom n' pop" book store compared to the mega book retailers. It's a favorite among southern writers as well. I've heard John Grisham loves to visit as well.

(One of the biggest and best independent bookstores in the country)

(You probably already know about this one -- this is Larry McMurtry's famous used book store, actually several stores, which have pretty much taken over the small town of Archer City, near Witchita Falls in the Texas panhandle. It's a hike to get there, but worth the long drive.)
And keep an eye out for . . .
Legacy Books
Dallas (Plano)
Coming Soon -- there has been a lot of buzz about this new, enormous independent bookstore soon to open north of Dallas,

Taylor Books in downtown Charleston, West Virginia. Mrs. Saville, the British woman who owns the bookstore/coffee shop/gallery, often serves fresh, warm scones with the West Virginia-roasted coffee. I've found small-press and local titles at Taylor that I've never seen anyplace else.
