Free books for Read Streeters

Simpsons%20200%20edited.jpgHere on Read Street, we love to give away books to thank our loyal readers, and what better occasion than our upcoming 200th comment! (That's way better than what you got -- nada -- for watching the Simpsons' 200th episode)

Nancy and I have compiled a stack of new releases. There are guilty pleasures: Rogue, by Danielle Steel and Married Lovers, by Jackie Collins. Or thrillers: Foreign Body, by Robin Cook and The Whole Truth, by David Baldacci. Or more weighty books: Golda, by Elinor Burkett or The Forger's Spell, by Edward Dolnick.

Whoever makes the 200th comment (we're almost there) gets first choice, #201 gets the second choice and so on, until the stack is gone.

WooHoo - free books - yeah!

Thanks for the great giveaways!

Okay, I'll bite--even though I work in a library and usually check out the books I want to read. May I remind all the Read Streeters that there is probably a library near you?

Don't go there, Dahlink. I went to the Hamilton branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library (and how long have they been Enoch Pratt-free, anyway?) at 10:30 AM a couple of days ago, popped a dime in the meter and was greeted by a sign telling me the library wouldn't open till noon. These limited hours are making my library use a bit sketchy.

I'm curious to know if the Robin Cook book begins with a character that we get to know and identify with, who winds up dead before the first chapter is out. With his novels, that ain't exactly a spoiler alert.

And that's my shot at #200.

Always in for free books.

Claude, I'm with you on the unfortunate library times-- but did you know that most of the EPFL branches are open until 8pm on several nights of the week? Those nights (and Saturday hours) are the only thing saving me from an extended library hiatus.

What a great thing: free books!
Over on Dining@Large, we don't get anything for commenting on the Queen's blog :-)
Well, we raise the ire of the Food Wrapping Police, or the Anti-Smoking Anywhere Police, but that's about it...

Susan, I can't criticize Queen Elizabeth, my blog tutor and ex-tennis partner, but I do think she could treat her loyal subjects to chips and salsa once in a while.

Thought you might enjoy my bookplate blog.

I will be posting something about bookplates in Baltimore in the near future. .

About the bloggers
While she always preferred The Hardy Boys to Nancy Drew, Nancy Johnston grew up reading nearly everything she could get her hands on, including a probably unhealthy amount of R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike, with the obligatory Jane Austen thrown in. She'll still read just about anything you put in front of her, especially the funny or weird. She lives in the city with her books, cat and drum set.

Dave Rosenthal came to The Baltimore Sun as a business reporter in 1987 and now is an assistant managing editor and Sunday editor. He reads a wide range of books (but never as many as he'd like), usually alternating between non-fiction and fiction. Some all-time favorites: A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole; Wind, Sand and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupery; and anything by Calvin Trillin or John McPhee. He belongs to a book club with a Jewish theme.
