Alice Steinbach's summer reading picks

Today on Maryland Morning, author and former Sun reporter Alice Steinbach gave her picks for summer reading: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout, The Story of a Marriage by Andrew Sean Greer and The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. If you missed the show, it will be available this afternoon at WYPR's website.

I don't know how to reach Alice Steinbach, but just in case you do..
She mentioned a special "fudge" that her Irish grandmother made but did not seem to know what it was. In the UK I learned to make "English Flapjacks", which I think she means, and I have the recipe, which I would be happy to share! They are yummy!

I am a contemporary of yours. My grandmother made 'brown candy' ...in my family it was called Aunt Bill's Brown Candy. It is exactly the same consistency as fudge but is this complex caramel flavor that instantly takes me back to my grandmother's kitchen. I have made it myself and have the recipe...timeconsuming but nothing else tastes quite like it. I am happy to share.
