Don't do this, for Pete's sake

As this AP story illustrates, some remedies for snow and ice on your property can be worse than the disease:
Authorities say a Montgomery County home caught fire after workers used a propane torch to clear ice from the roof.

Great story! A less extreme story involved my neighbor.

She paid some local guys to shovel snow off her roof.We think that they walked on a weakspot.

When it snowed again and the second snowfall started to melt her roof started to leak .

Me and another neighbor shoveled off the new snow for her [ as a favor, not for money ] and she had to bring in a roofer to patch the roof.

Sometimes its better to just leave the snow on the roof alone.

Can't say I don't identify with the desperation to try and do something. My front and back gutters have just come ripped off from the weight of the snow sliding off the roof... and it slid onto the flat roof porches--front and back, and the stress has now damaged one of the porches. Gimme that torch!!
