A mobile site for home-searching on the go
There are a lot of apps out there for people who like to check out home info from their phones while on the go -- Zillow's, Trulia's and Smarter Agent's, for instance. Now comes online real estate broker Sawbuck Realty, which says it has just launched the "first location-aware mobile real estate search website" at m.sawbuck.com.
Why a site and not an app? Sawbuck says it preferred to go with tech that "doesn’t require a download, opening a separate program to see search results, or a specific mobile platform." The site is designed to detect where you are by your smartphone's GPS.
My phone is not smart ("you stupid phone" is, in fact, what I often find myself saying to it as I'm trying to use it), so I haven't tried out any home-related apps. Have you? What's useful and what isn't? Do you use them as a tool for home searching or lookylooing?

Comments
Will they still be using their http://www.sawbuck.com/ ? I used that to follow price reductions in my neighborhood but it now says "Service Unavailable" Perhaps I am missing something but the mobile site does not seem to offer the same options, which are QUITE useful. I think what sawbuck is now offering isn't much different from trulia or redfin ... but what they offered on their old website was invaluable for following the market. Redfin's website does some of that but not to the depth & ease of use that sawbuck did, so I hope they renew their domain on the web ... because the mobile site just seems to give the same that the others do ...

Smart move on their part. It saves them money from developing multiple apps for multiple smartphones, future proofs them for any new platforms that emerge and doesn't alien potential customers who might be using a smartphone they don't support.

@whirrrp - I work at Sawbuck and we're so glad you find the price reduction information helpful in your home search.
We're definitely not doing away with the old site! The mobile site was designed specifically for smartphone users. You'll still be able to find the in-depth information on sawbuck.com and use m.sawbuck.com when you're out and about, and want to look up nearby homes.
Thanks,
Cynthia

@Jamie. Good news! You don't need a smartphone to use Smarter Agent. Our company started developing mobile real estate apps for standard flip phones like the Motorola RZR before smartphones emerged. Now our real estate search is available on all phones across all carriers. Just go to your carrier's store on your phone where you can get games and ringtones and look for Smarter Agent. Or text SA to 87778 and we'll send it to you. We also have a mobile web version for those who don't want to download apps. We don't like to leave any phone behind. Thanks for mentioning us!

Wanted to let you know that ZipRealty.com, the leading online brokerage site, has had a mobile site for a number of years and recently extended its services to include an iPhone app. ZipRealty’s free iPhone app searches Multiple Listing Service “for sale” homes in over 4,800 cities, showcasing listings, photos, offers price estimates from other online sites, and showcases homes that recently sold in the user’s desired neighborhood.
It also enables a buyer to contact his or her ZipRealty agent in one click. The application displays search results on Google Maps allowing the client to see homes currently on the market as well as a comprehensive list of recently sold homes with sale prices. By syncing the application directly with Google Maps, users can easily access GPS-enabled turn-by-turn driving or walking directions while exploring new neighborhoods.
Each client’s ZipRealty.com account will sync with the iPhone application after initial login. Homes bookmarked on the web version are easily accessed on the go, and clients can bookmark new homes seen during mobile searches. Clients can also begin new geo-targeted searches for homes that meet their unique home-buying criteria like price range, number of bedrooms or bathrooms, and property type. Visit http://www.ziprealty.com/iphone/ for more info.

So you know, folks, Myron's comment is one of the rare press-release-y ones I've let through because it's exactly on topic for this post. Just thought I'd mention it to avoid getting flooded with press releases disguised as comments.
