New real estate poll: Your commute

After some of you mused about acceptable distances between home and work, I started wondering how long your commutes are -- and what you think about them, since a 30-minute drive is in the eye of the beholder.

Share your experience in this week's poll. Er, polls. (If you commute to an institution of higher learning, feel free to participate, too.)

What do you like about your commute, if anything? What drives you crazy? If you're looking for a new place to buy or rent, how important a factor is commute time?

Commuting time should increase when I move, because I'm looking for a place from which I can walk to work, instead of all this fooling around with vehicles.

I have about a 30-min. commute, and I really dislike it. I used to live in the city and was able to walk to work in less than 10 min. Of course, I moved to Howard County for more reasons than a commute, but I can't wait to move closer to my job (which will happen within 2-3 years, I hope).

I have one of those nasty 90 minute commutes (one direction). What really bothers me is the 695 west side bottleneck and that ridiculous never-ending construction on route 30 in Hampstead (open the bypass already!!! Stop tearing up the old road and finish the new one first...it just needs lines...it's not rocket science!). I miss my old 30 minute commute to and from work and the 5 minute one I had before that.

I'd love to bike or walk/run to and from work. I really feel terrible wasting 3 hours of each day in my vehicle commuting to and from work. I'm sure the environmental people would be thrilled too since I drive an SUV. I'd like the exercise and more free time. Luckily it hasn't rained much in the morning for the past couple of months. People around here can't drive if it's not clear and sunny...don't know why that is.

I went from a 75+ minute commute (one-way) to less than 5 minutes.

Since I was renting, it was pretty easy for me to move after a few months at my new job (from North of Baltimore to South of Baltimore).

I'm now thinking about buying (I think I can afford it) but, I'm afraid that my office location might move in the near (still in MD somewhere) and the last thing I want is to settle down, only to have my commute back to 30-60 minutes.

I'd rather pay a higher interest rate and lose the tax incentive than buy right now and get suck with a long commute again.

For Fun - Cost discount required to buy with an extended commute (all else being equal)

0-5 Minutes: -10% (would pay more!)
5-10 Minutes: No Effect - Base House
10-20 Minutes: 10%
20-30 Minutes: 20%
30-60 Minutes: 45%
+60 Minutes: It better be free!
