Great affordable neighborhoods: Your nominations

Boy, have you responded to my request to nominate off-the-popular-radar neighborhoods in the Baltimore metro area that are both affordable and nice. (Proponents of Lauraville, in Northeast Baltimore, have come out in force.)

Keep those nominations coming. I'd like suggestions all across the city and in each nearby county. So far, nobody's recommended any communities in Anne Arundel, Carroll, Harford or Howard. (The price requirement -- below $250,000 -- makes it tricky in the more expensive suburbs, I know.)

Here's a recap of what I'm looking for: places in the metro area where the housing stock is decent, typical prices are below $250,000, crime isn't rampant and there's something that people would like if only they knew about it -- fun night life, a great elementary school, a strong neighborhood association, etc. You can nominate neighborhoods or entire ZIP codes.

Add your nominations to the running list here, or simply comment on this post.

Highlandtown - named for amazing view of the rest of city, due to higher elevation - what do we have? It's much cheaper than Fells Point or Canton... and we have that huge slice of green that is Patterson Park. And a high rate of homeownership, suprisingly low crime for Baltimore - creative alliance, all the amazing food on eastern ave... greek, latin, moroccan, german, polish, itallian, several great coffee houses ... quick access to 95 and 895, hopkins Bayview - a much easier parking situation than canton or fells point. And everyone here is really nice!

Medfield - The neighborhood sits on a hill nestled between Hampden and Roland Park, sharing the benefits of both. It has an ecclectic array of rowhomes, detached homes, and deuplexes, most of which are under $250K. In my opinion, one of the safest neighborhoods in the city. You can enjoy all the benefits of Hampden while also enjoying lower crime and a more modern home.

Also, it is very clean.

I live in Waltherson, a part of Lauraville in Northeast Baltimore. This area is exploding with the opening of 6 new restaurants in the past year and the Tuesday Connection, farmer's market, crafts, and music. Our motto - a little family and a little funky certainly applies to this area of the city. COP (Citizen's on Patrol) is a great way to get to know your neighborhood much better, help the community, and get to meet your neighbors.
