Time for Maryland to raise college tuition

The California Regents just raised tution by 32 percent. In Virginia, Virginia Tech, the College of William and Mary and Mary Washington are all raising tuition. Maryland should move in the same direction -- only more on the order of 5 percent. Gov. O'Malley's three-year tuition freeze has left Maryland universities without the resources to admit and educate everybody who wants to be educated. Maryland universities are rejecting applicants at record rates. We're rationing education.

Here's the recent column arguing in favor of a tuition increase. Here's a video reprise of the column in a chat with Jeff Salkin on Maryland Public Television.

Do we ration education or put people in the poor house with degrees that are almost worthless. I would rather keep the costs down.

Jay,

Can you or anyone else explain why increased spending on education is "good" but increased spending on health care is "bad". I find this paradox most difficult to reconcile.

Bumper Sticker: Tuition hikes are not the answer (cost reductions are)!!

Have you seen some of the local campuses ? they are palaces ? It's time for universities to join the real world and cut costs. College degrees aren't worth what we pay for them. A better investment is to buy your kid a Subway franchise or open a business. We've been marketed into believing that you must have a degree to contribute but all it does is show that you can follow the rules - which employers love.
