Would-be KFC diners have trouble printing coupons

The coupon for KFC chicken prompts you to download some software before you print it out, which would be a minor obstacle to free chicken if the software worked. However people are reporting problems.

UPDATE: Here is a link to a PDF coupon that you can print without downloading the software required for the other method. It appears to be legitimate. For the KFC free grilled chicken meal coupon, click here.

Commenter Dawn sez:

I tried to print out the Oprah free KFC giveaway coupon and it want allow it to be print from my printer. I installed all of the software that the coupon assisted on me to do. Ran software, still will not print coupon.

Commenter Bob sez:

No amount of trying resulted in coupon being printed. Computer got hung up as well. Geez Louize ---what kind of promotion is this?

Commenter Jesi says:

I tried printing from several computers....It WONT print! So this is how they get away with such a promotion...No one can actually download the coupon. This is annoying

Commenter Henry:

O.K. What is going on? I tried to print out the coupon and it would not let me. A security system thing keep popping up and it won't let me get in nor, will it let me print the conpon. Could someone explain? Thank you.

Has anybody successfully downloaded coupons?

I've successfully printed a few dozen copies to leave at the copier for others to use. A better explanation as to why they can't get it to work can be detailed at www.slickdeals.net
It has to do with the software they are using. If you go directly to the pdf, it shouldn't be a problem:
http://www.unthinkfc.com/KFCPdf.pdf

something that i noticed after having problems was that one sure fire way to have an error is to not use internet explorer. you HAVE to use IE. even then i had a couple computers with issues. but overall i have gone down the hall of my work and printed 14 coupons all with different barcodes.

Thanks Cheese, but the PDF link doesn't appear to be working anymore.

I thought this was a scam but I just tried to print a second time and 3 coupons printed. Now I will see if our local KFC accepts them. I was not prompted to download any software since I had whatever software was necessary on my computer. That software must be the problem with those that can't print. Maybe the software needs to be manually installed after downloading.

KFCPdf.pdf

I got it to print with no problem at all (and I'm using Firefox, not IE). Printed four (it says that's the limit), now I've got to find out if they're accepting them here in MD, since it sounds like posters in other states have been turned away.

One thing's for sure: if they get me into a KFC (for the first time in years) with this coupon and then don't accept it, I won't just stay and spend $$ instead. Bait & switch is my greatest frustration with companies today!

The link is dead. Sweet.

I tried to use my coupon asked for white meat ,coleslaw and mac and cheese was told I could not have it. I could have dark meat mashed potatoes and cole slaw or I could leave .I left I am noe letting everyone know.Heck of a way to run a promotion

It doesn't matter if that link is dead or not, as KFC is turning away customers that have that specific coupon code. That's the promo coupon with code 0012 3456 7890 1234 and it clearly states on the coupon that each code should be unique. There were many angry people at the KFC I visited today all with that same coupon in hand.

I was able to print it no problem with FireFox. I also saved the PDF. Others who went to get it got the same coupon code. We all went to lunch together and joined the long line of other people waiting for their free chicken. We were politely served and while it took about 10 minutes for our food to be ready, we did get it and in no way felt slighted.

I guess I know what I will be eating for the next two weeks! :)

(BTW, this was in San Antonio)

the pdf link doesn't work

Man, what a sucky promotion. Did we just get a virus or something? A screen that doesn't do what it is supposed to. I think there are about two of those coupons floating around somewhere from the lucky ones.

I just tried at 3:58 pm and it is saying that due to a high volume of people, it is not available at this time.

i was able to print 3 of them last night at home. all 3 had different bar codes. i went back to the site from work this morning and printed a couple more without a problem. but around11am EST the print button took you directly to the "KFCPdf.pdf" file. It did that for a good 10 minutes. so they should have to accept these "1234" coupons as they came right from their site by clicking the "print" button. It isn't as if someone hacked their site and found the url to the pdf file posted here.

I printed my coupons the first time successfully. The second time I recieved a message "you have already printed this coupon the number of times allowed". It would not let me print the coupon again.

I've been trying to call the KFC customer service line (1-800-225-5532) since last night.

Busy. Busy. Busy.

I imagine KFC is going to have a very bad quarter and a lot of customers that are turned off.

Lemme see, 49cents a pound 10 minutes prep time, 15 minutes on the grill and voila chicken at my house without driving without the frustration of the coupon or waiting in line.

After 6 hours of trying to print the coupons on Tuesday I finally was able to print over twenty coupons with the same bar code 0012 3456 7890 1234 which I thought was way too genuious. I live in CT and when I got up this morning around 6am I decide to see if I could print again and as it turned out I was allowed to print only 4 coupons at this time and they all had a different bar code number. Then I was told I printed the number allowed which was 4. Therefore I am thinking the ones I printed last night are not good because of the same bar codenumbers.

Hopefully when I take my coupon to KFC I will be greeted with a smile and receive my promo meal which is 2 pcs of chicken, two sides (cole slaw, potatoes) and a biscuit. Folks please read the web site as it clearly states you only get was is advertised, don't ask to substitute.

Not sure what is

my whole office was excited to try the new grilled chicken and we were not able to load the printer to our system. What a disappointment.

Not only can I not download the coupons through Oprah the KFC free grilled chicken meal coupon, click here link and the http://www.unthinkfc.com/KFCPdf.pdf link both say File Not Found. Thanks I got so excited for absolutely nothing...

I have tried numerous times to print coupons. I still have not receive coupons. Keep getting a response that says you have already printed coupons.

The website required me to download software on my Mac (I was VERY nervous about that) then go back to try and print the coupon. The server is busy. For an hour. Then I came here and see there's a PDF version. There's the first 404 error I've seen in years (used to see them every few minutes, then people figured out how to make the web work).

So I'm assuming they're trying to take a bite out of El Pollo Loco (pun intended). So here's my El Pollo Loco experience from last week:

My girlfriend tells me you go to El Pollo Loco and they're giving away free chicken dinners until 8PM.

I go at 7:30 expecting them to tell me they are out of chicken. I get in line and it takes about 5 minutes to get to the front.

I tell them I want the free chicken dinner. They don't ask for a coupon, they don't ask for anything. I didn't have to do anything but ask for the meal.

Again, I'm thinking they must be out of chicken by now, so I look over and see two HUGE grills completely covered with cooking chicken! I've never seen that much chicken being grilled in one place ever in my life!

So I get my number and sit down. Yep, it took about 15 minutes for them to call me, but there were at least 20 people ahead of me. I eat a fabulous chicken dinner with about 50 other smiling diners.

As I'm leaving, I see a lady in an El Pollo Loco outfit waiting in line. I ask if she's waiting to get a free dinner. She says "No. I'm here to tell the people coming in that the special is over." Looking at my watch, I see it's 8:05. She's making sure no one gets in line, waits to get to the counter and then gets disappointed! How cool are these people?!!!!

As far as I can see, they're the ones whose slogan should be "Chicken Done Right."

I won't get in to the details of the story because I've taken up enough of your time but I haven't stepped foot in a KFC for over 15 years because of the treatment I got last time I was there, and because they're fantastically overpriced.

A month ago my girlfriend got a crazy craving for KFC so I dropped her off and waited outside. When she got back in the car and opened the box SHE WAS PISSED at how little she got for her money. I reminded her that I've been telling her that for years. Now she believes me.

Good riddance, KFC.

You know what...companies put so much energy into advertiseing their promotionsthat they never take the time to conider their "What if's" What if the coupon doesn't print? what if the computer that some people are working on is an older model? What if employess of these restaurants aren't fully informed of the promotions nor the rules? What if some people do not own color printers? basically, if you want people to partake in these types of promotions, then be accountlable for the issues that may arise...and reassure your customers that FREE means FREE!!!!!

Another Mac user here; I wasn't nervous about installing software, but it didn't work. Wasted a good hour this afternoon messing with this thing. It told me I had an "unsupported browser" even though I used the only one (Safari) that they claim to support on Macs (I actually got farther along in the process using Firefox, which they don't support for us).

Eventually, I got the "already printed the number of times allowed" message on both browsers, even though nothing was ever successfully sent to my printer.

If they'd wanted to do this right, they should have had people submit their email addresses and sent everyone a coupon with a unique serial number, like Friday's sometimes does. That probably would have been more work for a human, but it would have avoided the PR fiasco that KFC is facing right now.

And get this: The "unsupported browser" page at coupons.com led me to a feedback page, where I expressed my displeasure with their software. I have gotten repeated error messages just trying to submit that form!

Hey folks, let me ask you.. Is it really worth THAT much trouble to get a couple of free pieces of lame chicken?

I mean, if you want the chicken bad enough, and want other options, just spend the $4.99 or whatever it is and BUY the chicken. I doubt most of you are that broke that you have to jump through all these hoops and then complain about it. If you were, you probably wouldn't be printing coupons off your computer in the first place.

it seems to depend on the browser you use, it wont work on chrome but explorer worked fine for me!

If I am not able to print KFC FREE meal coupon,I will never step in KFC.

I have been here in USA for last 11 years and I thought ,for the first time, I will have meal at KFC and try their famous chicken. But that is not going to happen.
Also on Sunday, May 3rd'09, i got coupon for 1 piece of UNFRIED chicken and I went to get the chickeN and what they gave me was a FRIED CHICKEN PIECE FULL OF DRIPPING OIL AND WHEN I POINTED OUT THIS IS FRIED CHICKEN, THE WINDOW BOY SAID THIS IS WHAT YOU GET!!!!! WHERE IS THE PRODUCT 'UNFRIED CHICKEN' HELL OF A PROMOTION.

What a bunch of ungrateful people. IT'S FREE!!!! You get what they give you!!! If you can't print the damn coupon then you go back and REFRESH THE PAGE until it does print. Yes, it takes about 50 times before you get one, but gee there's how many 100's of millions of people all scrambling to get one...GEEZ people, get a clue and have some freakin' patience. If your that hungry go spend the $3.99 and quit bitching!!!

How do we know that the "coupon printer" application is not a VIRUS, MALWARE, SPYWARE, or worse ? Clearly it is tracking individually identifiable information and they are probably keeping a database of the information they collect.
Are you really willing to risk your computer for a free snack ?
There are plenty of places (Geek Squad, etc.) who will be glad to charge $80 / Hour and up to remove this program you have been duped into turning loose on your computer.
USER BEWARE.

I been trying hours to get a coupon. glad i didnt get one anyway. i had a friend who worked at KFC over 30 years ago. Sure hope the place has improved since then. He was in charge of washing pots and pans which was near the food he had to prepare too. Suds got into the batter sometimes he said.

Thought this sounded to good to really be true. Spent hours downloading the software to print the coupons, trying to print the coupons, and finally after multiple tries called the KFC phone number - all to no response - thus no coupon. During these hard times we could all use a "Free" meal, thank you Oprah, but it didn't work!!! Oprah really needs to talk with KFC if this was meant to promote them on her show. Who agrees?

No problems here what so ever but I think it reports your ip address so it will only print 4 coupons from one home address. but if you have multiple computers in your home print them from each cpu all at the same time. I got 12 total from 3 different computers all with different bar codes. Hope this helps a few of you.

Hey there all. Believe it or not, the coupon can actually be printed. I tried a few times yesterday to get the coupon but all I got was a page expired. Well today I tried again and after installing the coupon software, I was finally able to print my coupon. I was only able to print 4, I was not able to print 5 like the promotion says. But this is very important to mention, each of the 4 coupons I was able to print has a completely different bar code number. Those who have successfully printed their coupon should check all the xeroxed copies if they printed multiple numbers. I doubt KFC will accept the xeroxed copies because the bar code for all will be the same. I tried printing 10 copies of 1 of the coupons and after printing 10, I noticed this. Very Very sneaky KFC. They're gonna make sure that a person is only allowed to receive up to 5 free dinners. Sorry to have to tell this to ya all out there.

I could not print the coupons out after downloading the software and trying several times. Finally, I went to the link at the bottom of the print coupon page and reported that I could not print it out. After several minutes my printed just started printing the coupons out three times. I think if you report the problem and give them your email address then they will release the coupons. I hope this helps.

Took a few times, and a whole lot of patience, but it eventually worked. Had to go back and forth, sometimes an error, sometimes a coupon. HURRY not much time left...

My virus scanner (Webroot Internet Esssentials) balked at the coupon printer installation, and by the time I got that issue resolved, the website had logged my IP address and refused to allow me to try again. But now that I've read the stories of the mob scenes at the KFC -- where the service is hit-or-miss even when you're paying full price -- not getting a coupon may have actually saved me a lot of time and aggravation.

Tried to print coupons also, wouldn't let me print either. What a scam. Oh Well, KFC chicken doesn't taste like it use too! It's nasty, I'd rather buy the rotissery chicken at Sam's club for $4.98, it's very good.

Hello! I am a web professional and when I saw that the DOWNLOAD LINK wasn't really for the chicken, but for a nasty Malware utility called CouponPrinter.exe. Trust me, run the other way! Sure it might actually work, but is it worth giving Oprah and Kentucky complete access to your browsing habits? This software phones home several times a day, sending a 3rd party server all of your IE browser cookies and page access info. Trust me, 2 pieces of chicken [if you actually can redeem the coupon] is NOT worth your privacy.

IF KFC IS READING THE COMMENTS;

LESSON LEARNED- Do you think the folks that enjoyed the free chicken at
EL POLLO LOCO
liked their chicken better, not just because it taste better, but because of the ease of just walking into a local EL Pollo Loco and just asking for the promo and with no stinkin coupon.

BTW, did you think people couldn't figure out how to print more coupons with more PCs?

But, hey I like KFCs cole slaw. I think it's one of the best among competition.

My experience was like many posting here. Through Oprah's hyperlink I downloaded the coupon printing software, Coupons wouldn't print, but I was redirected to Oprahs website in an endless loop. I had so many windows open I am not sure what was actually happening. One time I openend the print coupon hyperlink on Oprah's website and the PDF file with the 012 3456 7890 1234 bar code popped up. A later attempt gave me a hyperlink with a different name as they had changed it again. Again, the software would not produce a printed coupon.

For an undetermined interval known only to the Oprah website folks, the PDF file of the coupon was available. People were not informed at that time that there was an "X" number of coupon limit, and that they each required a unique barcode. You can see what PR mess developed when people, uninformed of the restrictions, tried to redeem their coupon.

The servers were probally crashing to access the coupon website, the coupons printing software was malfunctioning, or probally more likely that server was crashing as well , and some bright fellow put up the PDF file for a short time and then removed it from Oprah and replaced it with the one that was bugridden.

My local KFC in Milwaukee accepted the 1234 coupon. That may change.

I had no problem printing or getting the chicken for free. Thanks Oprah!

I tried 3 different computers, none would print the coupons. Then it told me I had printed the max limit.

Took me forever to get the coupons, but finally did get them printed, but tried to use the coupon last night after my grad school class and there was a sign that said they weren't accepting the coupons due to fraudulent coupons.

OPRAH WINFREY & KFC PDF COUPON 1234 ENDING NIGHTMARE

What do we do with the 1234 ending coupons that were provided from the PDF which I obtained by going to the Oprah Winfrey Website? When I went to our locale KFC with my two children and was told that the store would not honor the 1234 PDF Coupons. How was anyone to know this? I called directory assistance for Oprah show so that I could thank her via a voice mail and was given a New York number that is for the Magazine so I left a message at telephone 212-903-5188 in advance to extend a warm and personal “Thank You” only to get to our locale KFC in Atlanta with my children in tow only to be subjected to this nightmare. YET mind you others in my office who used the same PDF Coupons were able to use theirs. So what in the world is going on here? How humiliating this entire experience was especially as I just told my Children what Oprah had done and made it clear to them that this is the first time that I could ever remember ANYONE doing this on such a large scale only to go through this embarrassment. Now what totally tops this off in humiliation is that I gave one of my coupons to the owner of the company that I work for and then had to call him back and and tell him what I just went through so he would not have to stand there in a long line as I just did and look as stupid as I did only to get rejected. Now I cannot begin to tell you how humiliating this whole experience was. Needless to say the children and I did not eat any fee meal at KFC…….. I thank Oprah for her intent and I am still wondering about what in the world is going on here. I don’t suspect anything will be done

Heres what Oprah.com is posting as of today for people who have had problems with printing or redeeming the coupons.

I AM WITH EVERYONE ELSE, i CANNOT GET A COUPON TO DOWNLOAD FOR THE SAKE OF ME, THISIS A PROMOTIONAL DEAL? I THINK IT IS GREAT, BUT NO DEAL IS NO DEAL.

I downloaded the software with IE, clicked on the Print Coupon button, entered my zipcode in the box and pressed Enter. I got 4 coupons with 4 different numbers.

I also printed a bunch of coupons from the PDF but they all have the same number, so assume they are no good.

I will be going to KFC for lunch today to see if my coupon is any good.

Using my MacBook Pro, I was able to download and install the necessary "coupon software" to print the coupons. First, I made several attempts to print the coupons at my office--the software refused to print them, telling me I had to adjust some preference in the printer (HP Color Laserjet 4650). It's a networked printer, so I have no idea how to set its preferences.

Later that evening, I tried to print the coupons at home on my Canon MP210 printer. This time, the software and web browser said the coupons printed--but no documents of any kind ever came out! It's like the print job never made it to the printer itself! When I went back, jumped through all the hoops again, the web browser (probably in cahoots with whatever malware I'd naively installed) said that I'd already printed the coupons, and dumped me to another page. All I could do now is provide my name, physical address, email address, and phone number. "Someone will be contacting you shortly," it said.

I'm going to give these folks a week to make good on all this--then, I'm filing formal complaints with my state attorney general's office, and the Federal Trade Commission. I have no coupons, but I've handed over some personal information that should fetch a pretty penny on the "mailing list market."

This is fraudulent and deceptive advertising, plain and simple.

The online Federal Trade Commission complaint form can be found here.

While the FTC will not do anything for you, personally, every complaint submitted helps establish a widespread pattern of negligence, at the very least... or fraud, at the worst.

We went to KFC two days in a row and came out with no chicken. Day number 1, the lines were too long. TODAY, we got there and was standing in line only when they anounced that they were only accepting coupons printed out on a colored printer. You can not get through to the KFC complaint line because it's busy. So since they used Oprah's name to promote this chicken, I called Harpo studio because it makes Oprah look bad since her name is being used to promote.

I am from NYC. I printed out my coupons with the same barcode and a couple of co-workers and I went and redeemed them with no problem. Also, I e-mailed KFC Public Relations and got a response from them quickly. And it stated in the response that *All the PDF coupons downloaded from oprah.com on the evening of May 5 have the same barcode and are valid. So I suggest if you have any problems to contact them via e-mail at KFC.PublicRelations@KFC.com

I got it it to print. The chicken sucked.

It doesn't seem that KFC really wants to give away any food, Oprah or no Oprah. When I checked the site today, It said the promotion was over despite all the problems people have had trying to take advantage of their so-called promotion in these tough times. I guess that tells you how Yum Brands really feels about the American consumer.

would like to know what i have to do to get some coupons

I tried to pull up the coupon and it won't work.. Why not? Is like most other offers, not true?

I was able to print the coupons but I sent one with my daughter to gymnastics to get her dinner in Decatur, Alabama and the mom tried to redeem it and was told by the KFC there that they only accepted the coupons between 1-4pm. What??? My daughter is now suffering through a 1 hour drive home from gymnastics hungry and the coupon never said it was limited on the time it would be honored. I am upset.

A friend of mine in El Centro, Ca. e-mailed to me regarding the comment from the store in El Centro that they will not accept a coupon with barcode 1234. That is the barcode I printed too. I called your store in Garden Grove and they said they would not honor the coupon. If you are not going to honor the coupon in the stores then WHY DO YOU ADVERTISE TO DOWNLOAD AND TAKE COUPON TO STORES?
To me this is false advertisement.

Well, this is all too interesting, but confirmation. Me, if I buy from KFC, it's an attempt to satisfy a craving I get every couple of years. Too bad the product available today isn't what it used to be when I was "poor" and couldn't afford to buy KFC, hardly ever. I was going to have KFC for Thanksgiving. Turned out they were closed. So, I planned to have it for New Year's Eve. I purchased original and extra crispy. Instead of holding the chicken in an oven, now they use a steam cabinet, where they keep everything else. So, instead of a very special meal, the chicken was soggy, tasteless, and so disappointing. The extra crispy was like milk soaked corn flakes on the outside. Even the gravy, which I used to like so much, had no flavor. The cole slaw was almost what it was supposed to be. The biscuits had 3/4 of an inch of dryness on the outsides, and almost soggy in the middle. What happened to flaky fall apart in your hand, melt in your mouth? Maybe I'll try again in about 3 years.

Was able to print coupon. But found spyware on computer after. I don't eat chicken but wanted to get some for a friend who doesn't go out much but really likes KFC. He tried but the promotion does not extend to Hawaii. Thanks for nothing KFC

I went to a KFC and they said they are giving rainchecks but they don't have any rainchecks left! How lame is that?! That's it - that was my final visit to KFC!
