KFC courting trouble with Oprah coupon giveaway
History is replete with examples of companies that offered giveaway or discount promotions only to have them become a bit too successful. The idea is to get publicity and drive traffic without hurting your bottom line too badly. But KFC's loss leader might just turn into a big loss.
The Oprah connection is generating huge publicity. "Kentucky fried chicken coupons" is No. 11 on Google trends this morning. It's also interesting that, amid KFC's campaign to "Unthink What You Thought About KFC," the company is promoting the meal that the Colonel has been serving for 50 years. You can dowload a coupon for a free two-piece chicken meal, sides and a biscuit until midnight eastern time today.
No matter the ultimate cost or volume, the true test will be whether the promotion sustainably pulls KFC out of the lagging ranks of fast food chains.
UPDATE: As pointed out by commenter Doc, it's KFC's new grilled chicken, not the traditional fried stuff. This would have been obvious to me had I closely read the coupon terms I posted below!
UPUPDATE: KFC is getting flooded with attempted coupon redemptions today as well as questions about how to print them. Some other posts:

The coupon is for their new grilled chicken, not the 50 year old fried chicken.

So you write a story (ok, blog) without even knowing what you are writing about? Giving opinions on stuff is fine but at least research it and know what you are talking about.
I'd expect something better out of a newspaper, for however much longer they will exist.

I think KFC is pulling a fast one. So far haven't found a KFC in NC that will accept the coupons. But they are busy with people going in the restuarant with the coupons - being turned down and the people end up spending money.

The grilled chicken is not offered in Memphis, WHY NOT?
Can I use the coupon for the original?
Posted by: Margo | May 6, 2009 12:51 PM
This is going to lead to some serious hits on their profits. They made the mistake of making the coupon a pdf, which means that there is no control. One could bring in this coupon for 3 meals a day until the 19th and bring their buddies and coworkers. Not very bright on their part.

I can't print either. If coupons won't print and some KFCs are not accepting them this promo will backfire on them. There are plenty of other places to get chicken. Even supermarket delis are as good as KFC.

I have visited more local KFC to this chicken with out the coupon and have been told 1. won't be available until after 5/1. went back 5/5 and was told won't be available until 1-2 weeks because they don't have oven to cook it in. Do not use an oven for the biscuits. what a crock. this is in Liberty, MO.

I went to use my coupon today and there was a notice on the door stating that if your last 4 numbers in the bar code are 1234, the coupon is no good! Came home to try to print again and the site would not let me print another coupon.

If the coupon doesn't print, consider it a blessing! the portchestoer NY store sort of honored a few before noon (2 wings, mash & no biscuit) and then told the remaining coupon holders (that were shunned into a separate line) that the chicken was gone.
I eat atr this KFC regularly and was treated like a vagrant because I had a coupon; that they issued!

At first had problem printing but a second try was successful. Gliches do happen & public response is hard to gauge. Too bad so many have forgotten how to say, "Thank-you!" for something they are given. I wish that it would've occurred to me to pass my coupon to someone who really needed a free meal & doesn't have a computer to print a coupon. Thank you KFC and Thank you Oprah.

They HAVE to accept the PDF coupon.
At some point the link at oprah.com/KFC changed from unthink.com to the PDF of the coupon.
I imagine that this was done because the servers at the coupon printing place couldn't handle the rush.
Either way, it is a promotion that they are running through Oprah and Oprah said go to oprah.com/kfc to print the coupon.
They cannot give those coupons out on Oprah.com and then decide that they are not going to take them.
This whole promotion is a freaking disaster. I'd bet it leads to Oprah apologizing to viewers on air.
KFC needs to think things through a little better next time.
Don't they know that things go "viral" online these days?

Well, I showed up with three friends at the nearby KFC and it was way too crowded. So went to the Drive-Thru. We were told that they were out of the grilled chicken and we should come back after 40 mins, but if we ordered the regular fried chicken we could use our free meal coupons !!! Well, ofcourse we used the coupons and got 3 free original meals ! Looks like the coupon is not limited to the grilled chicken .. lol
Posted by: Ray | May 6, 2009 4:52 PM
So I went to the KFC on Topanga and Sherman Way in Woodland Hills and when I got there they were accepting the coupon but that I was the last person they were accepting. The workers put a sign on the window that the deal was first come first serve to the first 150 people! But no where on the coupon does it say that. So when I was eating my free KFC a grip load of people came in ignoring the misspelled sign out front and started a huge commotion saying that they were going to call Oprah and the KFC corporate office. Isnt this false advertising?

In Knightdale NC, we did not have any problems printing or using the coupons. The KFC is right next to the office, so we saw the amount of people that went through and it has been slammed all day. I can't believe they are still serving free chicken, there is no way they are going to be able to make up that revenue.

The security of my computer is more valuable than a wing or a breast. The last thing I need is spyware or to have my homepage hijacked.

Posted by: Connie L | May 6, 2009 9:23 PM
These are not a scam, just troublesome to download on some systems. My wifes pc downloaded them no issues. Mine hung up and only offered the pdf type of coupon most kfc's are now refusing. I had to try a few hacks found online to successfully download my four coupons. Actually, one can download as many as you have time for once you learn the hack. I imagine they will be getting a lot of counterfeit coupons. If a simpleton like me can figure it out, imagine what today's savy teen hackers are doing with this offer. Oprah may break the bank on this one!

Posted by: ROSETTA | May 6, 2009 10:26 PM
You need to have the printer hooked up, turned on, and set to default, also turn off popup blockers, and be ready to allow access via the firewall if needed.
If the above are not performed first, it will not work and you are out of luck. Try it in both firefox and IE.

It has been "widely" reported that Oprah's weight gain is due to an unspecified medical condition. Rumors are circulating that she was wooed with an unlimited supply of KFC to introduce a promo that she knew wouldn't deliver. Gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins.
In marketing, hype and spin without delivery what was promised is the worst sin. Disclaimers "KFC is not responsible for any technical problems or malfunctions of computer systems, servers or printers or lost or unavailable network connections." may protect them legally, but the public doesn't give a rat's behind, and no amount of damage control will change the public's perception.
Who's head is going to roll at KFC? If the folks at KFC were saavy enough to include language in their contract with the software provider that they were open to damages if beta testing was not executed with due diligance.
What monetary value would you put on the damage to the reputation of KFC?
Experience had taught me that fast food is a desperate, last act to fill the belly, and should be avoided at all costs. I don't know how many people share my view on the sad state of the fast food business, but at least in my case, it's their own doing.
If I have to dine out they won't be seeing my business ever again.

I printed my coupon fine. I did have to restart my PC once I installed the coupon software. I'm running XP. I plan on deleting the Software and checking out my system out for spyware and such. I hope I can redeem my coupon for the meal I had to run off to work and KFC was closed once I got my 1st break. I work the graveyard shift. Thanks in advance Oprah and KFC.... BTW, What do you think about the new Grilled chicken? Is it as good as the Original or the Crispy Chicken? Let us know.
Posted by: Torrance | May 7, 2009 8:19 AM
Hey, my printer spit out a thousand of those coupons, I had to reload the paper.
(I'll send them to Oprah, giver her a call...)
Posted by: ConanTheLibertarian | May 7, 2009 8:45 AM
I downloaded the software and printed 4 coupons, each had a unique UPC code. Interestingly enough sometime ago, my network guys at wk specifically warned us not to install the coupon printer software indicating famous for virus. I think it might have to do with having to disable firewall to download - whatever. When I rebooted after printing, I had a total keyboard & mouse failure (wireless). Might be a coincidence - might not - but after I spend $100 on a new wireless component, I'm uninstalling that flipping software with the quickness.

As we are experiencing a recession and many of us are unemployed and others are living paycheck to paycheck, Oprah and KFC reminded me how wonderful and beautiful America is - feeding a Nation with food and spiritual blessings! It reminds me of a biblical truth when Jesus fed 5,000 from 5 loaves of bread, 2 fish and had 7 baskets of food left over! How sweet it is!
Just peeking at Oprah's web site showed me that the generosity spilled over where some gave their coupons to Americans down on their luck and others in college with limited financial resources. This community outreach reminded me of the Pay It Forward message in the movie with the same name.
When I got on line at KFC, it was like a block party for America! As an unemployed Ivy League educated women - Oprah and KFC did something that many have failed to do! They reminded us how special we are and [All Americans] deserving of this!
I hope this Pay it Forward message spills over to Corporate America. .
According to a survey by human resources consulting firm Kelly Services, Inc, 26% of the U.S. working population now find themselves in temporary positions. Please be like Oprah and KFC and reinvest in America and Americans.
God Bless Oprah, KFC and America

KFC leaves a bad taste in the mouths of some customers
As you may know, when Oprah had announced the "free" chicken deal on her show and viewers who wanted to take a part of the giveaway, had to download the coupon from her website. The demand was so overwhelming that it temporally disabled the site. When you did get your coupon, a customer was not prepared for some of the obstacles before them.
There are about five locations in south Tulsa. In north Tulsa, the city's predominately African-American community, there is only one KFC, and they did not offer the grill chicken at all. So, customers were referred to other KFC sites to obtain the free meal.
Rumors has it- that a survey was taking earlier in the year that determined that north Tulsans would not support grill chicken. Many of those from north Tulsa traveled out of their way- were encountered with long lines with each customer with a coupon in their hand. During the periods of rush hour, customers were greeted with the announcement that the coupon were only to be used between the hours of 2pm and 4pm.
I myself, along with others, who had a coupon in hand, wanted to know why KFC was not prepared for the power of Oprah? KFC should have known what Ms. Winfrey could. This is a person who made entertainers and authors rich just by her endorsement. For goodness sake she help elect a president!
Meantime those who were turned away, wasted precious gas and time traveling outside their community to take part in this promotion. But Tulsa was not alone. Similar occurrences were felt by KFC consumers in other cities that attempted to make good on the "FREE" offer.

Just found out from KFC corp office that May 7th will be the last day of their free chicken promotion.. That they have been so overwhelmed that they are going to end the promotion and make a press release and maybe even offer a rain check... My question is can they legally do this? Don't they have to honor the coupon anyway?
Posted by: Paul S. | May 7, 2009 4:04 PM
I tried to use the coupon today, and they did not honor it. They said something about mailing a rain check coupon, whatever that means. That irritated me, as they shouldn't be offering something they can't back up. I don't think this is going to help their image or their business...

Darn, i was looking forward to a chicken dinner tonight! The last three were pretty good.
Posted by: dugllas | May 8, 2009 8:41 AM
I was told that the coupons could only be used at a KFC corporate run store. The question I have is How do we find out which store is a corporate run store?
Posted by: M. Garza | May 9, 2009 11:42 AM
i printed out the coupon's on the 5th in IL. i printed out 4 coupon's per household like it said with no problem. i went there on the 7th out in the rain driving and when i came up to the window they tried saying that i presented them a photo copy. they showed me a photo copy and a color copy that had a larger margin in the expiration date box showing a watercolor on the color printout and dots on a black and white printout. my printer printed a black and white and didn't print out the dots. i explained to them and all they said was "sorry" and gave me a raincheck form. what the hell, trying to say i commited coupon fraud. i called another kfc location and others had a problem with their printer printing out a watercolor mark. so i know it just wasn't me. not sure if it's because my printer is a dell A920 all-in-one printer or what. it's almost 6 years old now. maybe the software could of been the reason. but still to have someone say i was handing them a copy, it made me feel like someone stabbed me in the back. it was a horrible experience.
Posted by: stephen | May 11, 2009 1:46 AM
It's not like people paid anything for these coupons it was a nice offer considering how ungrateful our country is and obviously people ruinned it by using fake coupons or not getting it from the website, some people do not even know they are commiting coupon fraud it's almost funny. well people should get over learn how to cook dinner themselves. it just shows how stupid and ungrateful people are to throw such a fit over this.
