Good advice on cutting BGE bills: space heaters

Good advice on cutting BGE bills from commenter Charlie, who chimes in on an extended thread on BGE costs here. In terms of per-cubic-foot heating power I assume space heaters are much more expensive than central heat. But they've also gotten more efficient. And if you're only using them to heat selected spaces, they could lower your overall bill.

The people who spend $20,000 on energy related expenditures hopefully plan to live in their home a long time. That's a long payback period. Of course the house is more comfortable and it might help the resale, but you won't get it all back. My suggestion for folks who live in an old drafty house and have done all the obvious inexpensive 'energy tips' is to make serious use of space heating. Keep the house quite cold and just heat the room you're in. There are all kinds of space heaters, pick the one that works for you.

I have a space heater in my living room, bathroom, and bedroom. Watch your pets though, my dog likes to lay right in front of the heater.

I have saved a bundle on my heat this winter. I have found my little CZ Infrared heater to have saved me not only money but effort. I live on a sail boat with a cement hull that gets quite cold. The only other source of heat was our wood stove. The CZ Infrared heater was quite able to keep the temprature up except on the coldest nites and even then I was not required to wake up and feed the woodstove every 2 hours. The electricity I used still cost less than the firewood I buy, What a blessing!!!

Me and my Dog (Rufus) love our CZ infrared heater! The heat it produces is clean and soft, actually makes me feel warmer than it actually is and saves an average of $50 a month compared to my baseboard heaters.

Saving 'and' being warm is what its all about!
