Obama: No gas tax 'right now'
From the Christian Science Monitor on a federal gas tax. This or a cap & trade program has to happen after the economy recovers. But Obama is right politically to hold off now.
But when "Meet The Press" host Tom Brokaw asked Obama on Sunday about bumping up gas prices, the president-elect waved off the idea. He said that, "putting additional burdens on American families right now" is a mistake.

Cap & Trade should wait until the day that never comes-- the idea EPA could manage something the Chicago Board of Trade couldn't navigate on its best day simply fanciful-- a carbon tax both easier to administer and more policy efficient. As for a gas tax increase, now is the time to strike-- like any new Adminstration this one now at its high water mark-- its all down hill from here in terms of political capital. Clinton managed a quick 4.3 cent increase for deficit reduction and Trust Fund replenishment early in his reign, albeit by almost gut busting straight party line vote, with Gore casting the tie-breaking vote in the Senate. Package a gas tax increase with a hugh budget recission as part of the stimulus and you got a deal on The Hill cutting across party lines? Looks like a missed opportunity to me.
