Duh. GM rethinks the Hummer

hummer2.jpg From General Motors' annual meeting this morning. The company is closing several truck and SUV plants. And on the Hummer, CEO Rick Wagoner said GM is "undertaking a strategic review of the Hummer brand, to determine its fit with GM's evolving product portfolio" in light of changing market conditions," according to the AP story. "At this point, we are considering all options for the Hummer brand... everything from a complete revamp of the product lineup to partial or complete sale of the brand."

Sure, companies will be lined up around the block to buy that brand. Selling the Hummer line will require a buyer even more incompetent than GM. Oh yeah -- Ford!

Stop the Ford bashing! If you want to look at how Ford handled it's outrageous sized SUV's - just look at their decision to nix the Excursion a few years ago. They saw even then that a vehicle of that size was totally pointless.

Ford has suffered years of mismanagement, and the pension funds/healthcare/putting-the-whole-company-in-hock thing ain't helping.

But, actually, they're making pretty good cars now. I really like my Escape (5-speed manual, 27 mpg highway) that I bought for a song a few years ago; never had a problem with it and it's closing in on 100k miles.

It will, I suppose, take time for (decades of) perceptions to shift. And there's certainly a chance Ford doesn't last long enough for that to happen. But the kneejerk dis is somewhat uncalled-for.
