Hillary's conditional apology on Kennedy remark

I love these conditional apologies from people who have made public gaffes and insults. A genuine apology -- an expression of regret and an implicit request for forgiveness -- should be unconditional. It should be an acknowledgment that a wrong has been committed -- no ifs ands or buts. But here's Hillary, who defended the fact that she's still in the race by saying, "We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California." She responded to the uproar by saying:

“And I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive.”

Note the "if." One way to interpret this is that she's saying: Hey, I'm fine with what I said. But if you have a problem with it, OK, my bad. I don't really regret the remark. I regret that you're offended.

It WAS offensive, Mrs. Clinton. Just apologize without the fine print. Here's a (very partial) collection:

Janet Jackson after partially disrobing during the Super Bowl:"I am sorry if anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance at the Super Bowl."

Bill O'Reilly, after putting "Michelle Obama" and "lynching" in the same sentence:"I'm sorry if my statement offended anybody. That, of course, was not the intention."

Hillary Clinton after her husband compared Barack Obama's candidacy to Jesse Jackson's losing bid for the presidency: "You know I am sorry if anyone was offended. It was certainly not meant in any way to be offensive."

Trent Lott, after seeming to wax nostalgic for the days of segregation: “I apologize to anyone who was offended by my statement."

Sen. Clinton owed no apology to anyone. Instead the Obama campaign owed her an apology.

"Obama spokesman Bill Burton said Clinton's comment was 'unfortunate' and 'has no place in this campaign.'" This comment showed Burton's lack of integrity.

It was scurrilous for Burton to pervert the comment into a meaning that clearly was never intended by Sen. Clinton. It was vile demagoguery for Burton to seek to inflame people's passion against Sen. Clinton with a malicious attack and misrepresentation on her.

Mr Hancock, would you care to explain why you think Hillary Clinton's answers were offensive? Are you out of communication with you reason? I have watched the whole video. Have you? She wasn't merely defending the fact that she is still in the race. She was merely referencing two of the most well-known examples of Democratic Primaries lasting into June. This is a classic example of the problem being not with the person whose comments are said to be offensive, but with the reaction of the people who claim they are offended. There is nothing offensive or insensitive about it. To take offense is simply, dare I say it, an insane, unbalanced reaction. It should not be encouraged. So much for the new, enlightened politics Barack Obama and his supporters claim they would like to see.

Crat3. Of course you find fault with Mr. Burton as you do with ANYTHING with Senator Obama's campaign. What Clinton said and the way she connected it to why she is stil in the race is greatly offensive. What is she saying, that she is waiting for someting fatal to happen to Senator Obama in June and then she'll win the nomination??? That is exactly what she is saying. And people everywhere picked up on this! The only people that didn't and don't are people like you that see her as doing NO wrong. Take off your rose-colored glasses and accept Hilliary for who and what she is....a liar and a dirty politician; pretending she's otherwise is NOT reality.

I agree with the Obama camp that Clinton's comment had no place in the election---because it was in baste taste given the failing health of Sen. Ted Kennedy. Her intent was clearly to make the point that she is still in the race.

Your "if" means "conditional" comment is just as absurd as today's New York Times article which drew connections to Obama's safety. Why should she assume the Kennedy's were offended just because media hacks like yourself say it was offensive. It's called social etiquette Mr. Hancock.

Just stop! Anyone not trying to gain headlines (or bylines) can see the nature of Clinton's comments.

The assassination threats against Sen. Obama began as soon as he announced his candidacy. The FBI and Secret Service took them seriously enough to assign him protection earlier than any candidate in history. It is beyond belief that anyone would think that the use of the word "assassination" in the context of this campaign carries no extra meaning. It no was doubt unintentional, but it was breathtakingly crass and stupid. Yes, she owed an apology, if for no other reason that her thoughtlessness.

Alex n Crat3, you is both dumb & think we're even more stupid than u, she meant if kennedy's rival won cos they shot Bobby then surely same can happen in her case, why shud she drop out of the race only to find the next day obama literally drops dead?
HILLARY U'RE AMONG THE LOWEST OF THE SCUM, MONICA FOR PRESIDENT, AND BILL FOR VP

Note her apology was to the Kennedy family not her opponent. Clinton has been playing Nixon's southern strategy since the Iowa caucus. That hasn't worked, other than in racist strongholds, and now, with her back up against the wall, she all but calls for Obama to be assassinated. Classy, those Clintons.

The ease in which Hillary spoke on the subject of "Assignation of Robert Kennedy" yesterday was alarming. She speaks of assassination as if it is a natural course of political life.

Let's hope that all of those previous assignations will be seriously investigated now.

I do not believe for one minute that her remark was a Freudian slip...she meant every word of it...as a message to Barrack; which is DO NOT FOR GET ABOUT MY PAST...!!!

Painting a target on the back of Senator Obama is not only offensive it is criminal.

Clinton should give a real apology. At least Huckabee had the decency to do that.

I'm an Obama supporter
I'm sure Hillary was NOT referencing the possibility of an Obama assassination. Her choice of words might have been better
She apologized
They are all tired
They are all human
The end

Enough with the Clinton family apologists. ALOT of people have watched the whole video, and the comment isn't "merely" anything. It's a complete miscomprehension on the part of Mrs. Clinton that she might be exposing some type of subconcious hope that a catastrophic and all too politically motivated violent occurance would somehow move her back into front-runner standing. Let me tell you why I am offended. As a white guy, I remember when a white guy (or guys; the historical record may not be the standard for truth) decided to blow away MLK, because he was a black man with the power to galvanize people around a just cause. As a liberal, I remember when RFK was gunned down for being too liberal. Hillary's comments demonstrate to me that she is incapable of taking her thought process above the political fray, and instead wants to continually change the definitions of acceptibility and classiness to suit her own purposes.

And crat3, the fact that in these times you cannot recognize when your beloved candidate is wrong, either a little or alot, and how that begets a need for an apology, only indicates how deluded you are about Clinton's now failed campaign.

There was no misinterpretation. By inference or otherwise she clearly painted the picture she is staying in the race just in case Sen. Obama gets assassinated. PERIOD. This is why she invoked Sen. Kennedy getting assassinated. Now, if you are an ignorant person you will claim otherwise. Here’s the definition of “Inference”:

1. Conclusion: a conclusion drawn from evidence or reasoning
2. Reasoning process: LOGIG the process of reasoning from a premise to a conclusion
3. Implication: something that is implied

Those of you who want to ignore this go ahead. Maybe someday your co-workers will drop hints, you know, if you somehow you drop dead you won’t be able to get that promotion and yes they would have said it not once, not twice, but enough times to get your attention. And yes your co-worker would of course provide historically inferences why their comments would make sense.

The fact that she needs to clarify this VERY LOOSE connection, makes Burton correct. It has no place in the campaign.

Clinton- haters found a sand -pile and now turning it to a mountain just to push her out from race. Obama has made mistakes by doing and saying things that are/were not appropriate but he turns around and tries to convince us by saying that he meant something else and news/medias accepts his interpretation as if he is an almighty God that we needs to completely trust him. Anti-Hillary news/medias(like this blog) are constantly after her throughout this year trashing her to no end for every mistake that she makes in order to promote their Lord Obama. Bobby Kennedy's son already made it clear that he was/is not offended by historical connection that she was trying to make as to why she is still in the race. The count of popular votes indicates that Hillary Clinton is admired and loved by as many dems as Obama has been but almost all news/medias are backing Obama's nomination by treating Hillary as an evil person. Now, many of us Hillary supporters don't consider Obama as a bad person even though he was mentored by racist Wright for 20 years. Only thing that I want to say to the Hillary haters and an unethically one sided news/medias is that we support Clinton as strongly as you do to Obama and many of us may consider supporting him for GE if he starts to act like an unifier as he has been preaching as to how skillful he is in that area. Viciously spitting haters like Keith Olbermann and Mathews being on his side, I doubt that will happen but I will still keep my hope alive for that day to come.

The RFK reference is telling because it illuminates Senator Clinton's way of thinking. In her world, Obama is significant only because he is an obstacle that stands between her and what she wants. And a number of things (an unforeseen scandal or a plane crash -- or even assassination) might fortuitously remove that obstacle from her path at any moment.

Given that outlook, put yourself in Obama's position for a moment. Would you want Clinton as your vice president?

DON'T BE DUPED AGAIN AMERICA !!!

IT'S ABOUT ELECTABILITY !!!

Large numbers of BUSH_McCain Republicans have been voting for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucuses from early on with the backing and help of the medical and insurance industry. Under the direction of the George Bush, and Karl Rove vote fraud, and vote manipulation machine. Because they feel Barack Obama would be a weaker opponent against John McCain. And they want to stop Hillary Clinton from fixing the HUGE! American, and Global mess they have created. shocking!!! isn't it. Just gotta love those good old draft dodging, silver spoon Texas boys. Not! :-(

You see, the medical and insurance industry mostly support the republicans with the money they ripped off from you. And they don't want you to have quality, affordable universal health care. They want to be able to continue to rip you off, and kill you and your children by continuing to deny you life saving medical care that you have already paid for. So they can continue to make more immoral profits for them-selves off of you, and your children's suffering.

With Hillary Clinton you are almost 100% certain to get quality affordable universal health care for everyone very soon. And you are also certain to see major improvements in the economy for everyone.

The American people face even worse catastrophes ahead than the ones you are living through now. It will take all of the skills, and experience of Hillary Clinton to pull the American people out of this mess we are in. Fortunately fixing up, and cleaning up others incompetence, immoral degeneracy, and mess is what the Clinton's do very well.

Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama's. She also leads in the electoral college numbers that you must win to become President in the November national election. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!

Just look at Oregon for example. Obama won Oregon by about 70,000 votes. But approximately 79,000 Bush republicans switched party's back in January to vote for Obama in the democratic primary. They are not going to vote for, or support any Democrat in November. Are you DEMOCRATS going to put up with that. Are you that stupid, and weak. The Bush republicans think you are that stupid, and weak.

As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses, and open primaries where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help. Except North Carolina where 35% of the population is African American, and approximately 90% of them block voted for him. African Americans are only approximately 17% of the general population.

Hillary Clinton has been OUT MANNED! and OUT SPENT! 4 and 5 to 1. Yet Obama has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton. This is even more phenomenal when you consider she has been also fighting against the George Bush, Karl Rove vote fraud machine in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucuses. Hillary Clinton is STUNNING!.

If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. That is crystal clear now. Because all of the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. And the demographics, and experience are completely against him. All of this vote fraud and Bush republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is.

You will have another McGovern catastrophe where George McGovern lost 49 of 50 states. And was the reason the super-delegates were created to keep that from happening again. Don't let that happen to the party and America again super-delegates. You have the power to prevent it. The only important question now is who can best win in November. And the answer is HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON. That fact is also now crystal clear.

And YOUNG PEOPLE. DON'T BE DUPED! Think about it. You have the most to lose. As do African Americans. Support Hillary Clinton. She will do her best for all of you. And she will know how to best get it done on day one.

The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. Everyone needs to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton NOW! So you can end this outrage against YOU the voter, and against democracy.

The democratic party, and the super-delegates have a decision to make. Are the democrats, and the democratic party going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee to fight for the American people. Or are the republicans going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee through vote fraud, and gaming the DEMOCRATIC party primaries, and caucuses.

Fortunately the Clinton's have been able to hold on against this fraudulent outrage with those repeated dramatic, and heroic comebacks of Hillary Clinton’s. Only the Clinton’s are that resourceful, and strong. Hillary Clinton is your NOMINEE. They are the best I have ever seen. Probably the best there has ever been. :-)

“This is not a game” (Hillary Clinton)

Sincerely

p.s. Cynthia Ruccia - I'm with ya baby. All the way. "Clinton Supporters Count Too."

Is that anything like when Obama talks about "typical white people"? Come on. This trumped up hatred, and the Obamedia's, however unfounded it may all be, is overriding common sense and human decency. If you're looking for evil - you'll find it alright. I know there's a boatload of spin and excuses ready at a moments notice for that the Godlike creature that is Obama, but people are taking this too freakin' far. It's pretty amazing how supposed democrats have become as big of Clinton haters as Rush Limbaugh and Ken Starr ever were.

So, for those who aren't students of history, merely the Obamedia's version thereof: "On June 4, 1968, Kennedy scored a major victory when he won the California primary. He addressed his supporters in the early morning hours of June 5, 1968 in a ballroom at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles."

That's what she was talking about. RFK won just won California primary the when he was killed IN JUNE. I knew that when I heard her say it. Funny, how no one's bothering to point that little factoid out, but it's more beneficial for the Clinton-haters to spin it into something nefarious.

And then there's this:

RFK Jr. Says No One Should Be Offended
May 23, 2008 10:23 PM

This evening Robert Kennedy Jr., who has endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., cautioned folks not to be offended at Clinton's mention of his father's assassination when discussing why she was staying in the race and how there was precedent for the primaries lasting until June.

In a statement, Kennedy Jr. said: “It is clear from the context that Hillary was invoking a familiar political circumstance in order to support her decision to stay in the race through June. I have heard her make this reference before, also citing her husband's 1992 race, both of which were hard fought through June. I understand how highly charged the atmosphere is, but I think it is a mistake for people to take offense.”

You know, the malice has reached such levels that I actually saw a discussion about how Clinton supporters should leave the party. Really? Obama doesn't need us? Okay, but we were here first ya know.

Hillary meant what she said. She believes it is her deatiny to be president even if it means something bad must happen to Obama. For those who think she was stressed, well, if the campaign stresses her, imagine what having the fate of billions and her finger on the button during a crisis will do to her. Hillary is lost in the wilderness and overcome with stress. She's needs a long rest not a White House job.

And to Teri B. what do you mean Hillary's supporters have been in the party longer. Longer? Maybe, but not as loyal. That's why they're known as "swing" voters because they swing from party to party. Obama's core supporters have a longer history of loyalty to the Democratic Party and have never threatened to vote Republican if they didn't get our way.

Whether HRC's apology was merely conditional is a very complicated topic, illuminated by the philosophical study of conditionals. I discuss it extensively on my blog.

Statements that are framed in such a way as to cause harm are often framed that way by mistake. It may be that when Hillary is set on making her case, she neglects being resonable due to a lack of care rather than a conscious attempt. It is a shame that carelessness can be just as harmful as intent. When bullets, dodged or not, are part of the subject, Hillary will probably be very careful in the future. (Hillary, keeping recent history in mind, do not go bird hunting with Dick Cheney!)
