New electricity prices posted

Wednesday's column will probably be about how much higher BGE prices will rise starting in June and what alternatives you have. To that end the Kilowatt Shopping Headquarters has been refreshed, with the latest prices from alternative suppliers. They've all gone up by a penny per kilowatt hour or so. The good news is that standard BGE prices won't be rising as fast as gas prices. They'll bump up about 5 percent. More Wednesday.

This is ridiculous. Feb 2008 I used 500 less Kilowatts than Feb of 2007 and my bill was $100 more. I understand that prices rise, but we are getting the shaft. Can't wait for my $170 "rebate". The late 70's and early 80's are going to look like a tea party compared to what's coming.

That's interesting, Jeff. Especially considering that the rate you paid in Feb 2008 ($.1086 kw/h) is LOWER than the rate you paid in Feb 2007 ($.1088 kw/h).

Isn't it Power Guy? Here's my usage staight from my E-Bill

Mar 08 Actual 30 2121 70.7 38
Feb 08 Actual 30 2016 67.2 38
Mar 07 Actual 28 2573 91.9 31

So put that in your pipe and smoke it Power Ranger

Oh Power Ranger,,,,ooops..I mean Rob Gould,,where is your witty response?

Did you sign up for a deferral program? Do you have gas service too? There are lots of reasons your bill could be higher. But the fact remains the rate was lower in 2008 than in 2007.

No deferral, No gas, But the fact remains that my bill is $100 higher w/ less usage.

I am not sure about residential rates but I do believe commercial customers did pay less per kWh on the generation and transmission charges from 10/07 tohroug 5/08 than they did from 10/06. You should check the delivery charges - I think they went up and they are not charges that another supplier can provide - only BGE - APPROVED BY THE PSC.

You think it's bad now....All MD utilities are currently in the process of setting rates for delivery beginning 10/08. The auction started on 4/14 and was closed on 4/21. Minor changes may happen before final approval from the PSC next week!

Take a look at oil ($120) and nat gas (10.7)....That is all you need to know if you are wondering if there will be another increase in October.

What is interesting to me is that most news articles always say the best bet is to stay with the local utility. I sell power and you cannot tell me that locking into a 5 year contract at any point last year, or the year before, or the year before was not a good idea.

It's about time someone reported on the success business customers are having, after all they are 50% of the entire load.

I sure hope for the Sun's sake, Jay is not in charge of their contracts.

Anonymous, Thanks for trying to explain instead of trying to ridicule like Power Ranger.

Why the hostility, Jeff? You're the one telling me to "smoke it" and sarcastically calling me "Power Ranger." You wanna complain and say you're getting the "shaft", fine. But at least do so objectively rather than hysterically ranting. Nobody likes higher electric bills. And you've done the right thing in trying to conserve energy, but rather than just saying you used less and still paid more, it would help to look at the rates, deferrals, etc. The electric supply rate was less in '08 than in '07. I had approximately the same usage and was charged approximately the same, but my bill has a deferral credit for the '07 period. Thus, making my total '07 bill less than my '08 bill, even though the charges were equal. And, considering the amount of power you use (about four times what my home uses, but I have a gas furnace), it could easily make a $100 difference in your bill.

First of all, you started the one-upsmanship by putting "lower" in all caps, and then you act like I'm attacking you when I'm merely fighting back against Mr Sarcasm.

Second, deferral means you're going to have to pay it back eventually Einstein.
Third, you can point out how much more electricity I use than you to try to deflect the fact that the cost has risen dramatically.
We agree to disagree, signed Mr Hysterical. Now go out and have a good weekend!
I always like a good fight!
