Maryland's Cash for Appliances rebate program to begin in March
Maryland's going to have more than $5.4 million to give away through the U.S. Department of Energy's energy-efficient appliances rebate program once it kicks off here in March 2010, according to the DOE and the Maryland Energy Administration.
Maryland proposed in its application to (updated) will offer a $300 rebate for purchases of ENERGY STAR electric heat pump water heaters, which the MEA's FAQ on the appliane rebates describes as "a new and very efficient piece of equipment" compared to traditional electric water heaters.
State residents would will also be able to get stimulus rebates of at least $25 $50 for super-efficient clothes washers and $25 for refrigerators ...
... which would come in addition to existing appliance rebates already offered by local utilities.
What to do if you're planning to replace an appliance before March? Check with your utility. BGE is now offering rebates on Energy Star-qualified refrigerators, clothes washers and room air conditioners.
Delmarva Power offers rebates on refrigerators, room air conditioners and water heaters, and so does Pepco.
Allegheny Power and Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative will be offering rebates starting in January, so stay tuned.
UPDATED: The federal stimulus appliance rebates will be offered through the utilities, because they have already have appliance rebate programs in place that were approved by the Maryland Public Service Commission. Look for more details about how to apply for the money closer to March 2010.
