Cash for Clunker Scams

Consumer Action is calling a press conference for tomorrow to release a letter its sending to the U.S. Department of Transportation to get a crackdown on Cash for Clunkers scams.

According to the group, consumers are being threatened with the loss of their new cars unless they pay $3,500 or $4,500. The group says a common gripe has been that the Department hasn't followed up on consumer complaints about this.

Has anyone here had that experience?

I traveled almost 100 miles to locate a specific ford vehicle, they are in short supply (focus). After selecting the car , we got to the CARS program. My "clunker" was purchased by me in 1991 and fully qualified under the guidelines.. was registered and insured for the past year by me.... I brought all documentation with me. The dealer refused to submit my clunker because the title and registration listed my first name as "RUDY", and my insurance and drivers license list my first name as "RUDOLPH". I was told this disqualified me from the CARS program , so I could only buy the new car with the $700 trade in value, instead of the $3500 clunker value. They assured me to be the case. Having been informed that my clunker wold never qualify I purchased the new care for the $700 trade in allowance. Was I scamed?

That seems like a hard line to take. I'll ask the feds about that. Anyone else have problems like this or other problems? - eileen
