Who's going car shopping? "Cash for clunkers" starts today.

The federal government’s “Cash for Clunkers” program officially starts today. Trade in your old heap for a more fuel efficient vehicle and you can get a $3,500 or a $4,500 credit. Chrysler is offering an additional $4,500 in incentives on top of that.

The Maryland Automobile Dealers Association said this morning that they know of more than 140 dealers in the state who are participating in the program. And that number could grow. The organization will post a list of those dealerships on its website later this morning.

Consuming Interests wants to hear what you think about the program. Car owners, is the deal enticing you to go out and buy a new car? Any of you headed out today? Car dealers, what has the response been from consumers about the program? Do you think this will help jumpstart sales?

The real question is WHEN does it start? The CARS.gov website, including their informational flyer, says 7/27...but all the articles say today. I want my new car! Waaah!

Juanita, Reporter Eileen Ambrose was told you can start registering today. And some dealers started before today to take people's old clunkers for when the program does start. So, I say head on out. And let us know your experience. AKW

There's also a provision in the recently passed stimulus package providing that if you buy a new car this year (and this year only), you can deduct the sales tax on your 2009 tax return. We bought a new car last night and will definitely take advantage of that since we don't qualify for the cash for clunkers.

While we were waiting to test drive our new car, the salesman got a few phone calls from people asking about the cash for clunkers program. Hope that's a good sign.

Kathy, enjoy that refund check! --- lfk.

so if you have two or more clunkers at your house you cannot trade both of them for one car. The program is for one per
person.

If your car doesn't qualify for a voucher, you can donate car to charity and get a tax deduction instead. http://www.cars4charities.org

So what happens to the clunkers after they are bought by the dealers/government? Are they going to be sold back to the public or to other countries or are they going to be destroyed? Some of those clunkers are expensive cars such as BMW SUV's...

The cars will be destroyed because the program is meant to get cars that aren't fuel efficient off the road for good. akw
