Simplicity crib recall: spread the word

UPDATED: Check this CPSC chart of Simplicity recalls to confirm whether your crib model is covered by the July 2009 recall.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall of 400,000 Simplicity Drop Side cribs sold between January 2005 and June 2009, according to the Associated Press.
As the picture from the CPSC shows, the drop side can detach when the hardware breaks, allowing a child to become trapped and potentially suffocate.
One child died as a result of entrapment, and there are 25 other reports of the drop side detatching, according to the CPSC.
Stores will provide refunds or store credit for the cribs. UPDATED: No receipt necessary! Thanks, Jolene, for the question.
Unfortunately, this is a familiar problem ...
... because 600,000 cribs were recalled last year, and 1 million cribs recalled in 2007, for similar problems.
The CPSC recommends that parents "should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby."
More details, including the model numbers, are available in the CPSC's Simplicity crib recall announcement.
JUST TO EMPHASIZE, this voluntary recall has been negotiated for certain crib models, said CPSC spokeswoman Patty Davis. But not all the Simplicity cribs recalled previously are eligible for refund/replacement any longer, although those still pose a danger to infants. If that's the case families are advised to destroy the recalled cribs and find another (safer) place to put baby to bed.

i was just wondering if you need a recipt? to take back the recalled crib. Ihave had it for about 3 years and now use it for my new 10 month old. What should i do?
No receipt needed! Just verify that your crib is one of the models covered by the recall, and bring it back to the store where you got it to get store credit, a replacement or a refund. --- lfk.

We buy ours online from a department store 5yrs ago and was wondering how to go about returning. Can we bring it to a local store?
I think your best bet would be to bring it back to the department store where you bought it ... Is it too far away? -- lfk.

I was just wondering what to do if I no longer have the box for the crib, ( I got it in 2004 ) nor do I think the place I bought it at even sells this brand anymore. I did verify that it has those plastic tabs and is model # 8994 according to the instruction booklet. What do I do now?
Lisa, I think your best bet is to take the crib back to that store, even without the box. They should be expecting the recalled products. If you have trouble, call the CPSC recall hotline at (800) 638-2772. --- lfk.

I recently found out that my son's crib was recalled last year (2008) I think that in the months of Sept-Nov. Luckly, the crib was not in use. However, now I wanted to get rid of it and sell it, but do not want to sell something that is not safe. Can I get my money back even though I have no receipt? What do I do?? Please help!
Depends on the model number, Rubi ... The CPSC published a list of model numbers covered by the July 2009 Simplicity crib recall. Those models are eligible for a refund or store credit. For more information, try calling the CPSC Recall Hotline: (800) 638-2772. -- lfk.

I received one of the recalled cribs for a shower gift when I was pregnant with my daughter 6 years ago, now I am expecting my 2nd child and was planning on using the crib again untill I found out it was recalled. I think it was purchased at either Target or Big Lots but I am not sure and we don't have any Big Lots where I live now. I have no recipt or box. Will they still accept the recall after I've had the product for 6 years?
Katie, call the CPSC hotline at (800) 638-2772 with the model number to be sure, but you won't need the receipt or box for the refund. Either way, don't put baby #2 in that crib! --- lfk.

I just found out about the recall for my crib. Can I still take it back to the store without the box?
Erica, check the CPSC chart to make sure your crib is covered by the July 2009 recall, but if it is, no box or receipt required. Just take it back to the store where you got it. --- lfk.

I have one of the recalled simplicity cribs.I went to the store where I purchased it and they said we couldnt return it because it was past the time of return, since we bought it a year ago. There advise was to contact simplicity, however my attempts to contact them have failed. The crib recall hotlines are not working. What should I do????
Joanna, because this is a recall and not a typical return, the store SHOULD accept the crib and offer you a refund or store credit --- provided your crib is among those covered by the recall. Check the chart of Simplicity crib recalls to be certain.
Unfortunately we've sometimes encountered retailers with employees who are not familiar with recalls. Stores need to do more to educate their staff about how to respond to recalled products. --- lfk.
