Tax Rebate Glitches
So I told you yesterday that I finally got my rebate last week. I had figured it was coming since, according to the last two digits of my Social Security Number, it was supposed to land on Friday.
I can't say that I was 100 percent confident that I was going to see it since I started seeing a few stories about rebate glitches. The Akron Beacon Journal is reporting that "about 1,500 tax rebates nationwide have been deposited into wrong bank accounts, and the IRS is working with the taxpayers and banks on a case-by-case basis. The IRS said to date, nearly 30 million rebates worth more than $27 billion have been issued and the vast majority went directly to the correct bank accounts."
According to the ABJ:
As many as 350,000 households are not getting the $300 per child refund owed as part of economic stimulus rebate payments. The IRS says taxpayer error and problems with commercial tax preparation software were responsible for the problem affecting a tiny percentage of the 130 million taxpayers expected to benefit from the refunds.
The IRS said corrected checks will be mailed out automatically and taxpayers don't need to call or take any additional steps. However, those checks will not be sent until early July.
Anyone out there worried that you might be one of the ones affected by the glitches? My sister got a letter from the IRS in the mail that said her rebate was being mailed to her even though she filed electronically. She figures that's fine as long as it shows up.

My wife learned and the Sun article confirmed that if you allowed the preparer or software company to take their fee from your direct deposit refund, you will not be getting a direct deposit rebate.
I guess because, like eople who had advanced loans, the preparers set up an interim bank account (to make sure they got their $) - the IRS won't deposit to that interim bank account.

Well....used Taxact to e-file both Federal and State return. Received refund from state within days and direct deposited into my bank account. On April 15th the govt took the monies that I owed from my bank account....no problems According to the schedule I should have received my $1800 check on May 9th. As of today nothing! I didn't pay any e-file fees with any refund...I used a debit card for that...and I e-filed my forms back in March. So what is the hold up? I'm not confident at all that I will get any money.

What is soon to be forgotten are the thousands of Citizens who were excluded by the bill because they are married to a foreigner? If there is an ITIN (Individual Tax Payer Identification Number) in a joint filing the taxpaying citizen doesn't get a rebate, even though they are financially eligible.
Many Americans are married to someone who are not able to get a Social Security number until the immigration process is complete, the bill punishes the Citizen.
DD: This is true. I know several recent news stories have talked about how our soldiers have been affected by this. It seems our military families would need this rebate most.

"DD: Did you spend it yet Bud J?"
LOL
My wife is pretty much through her 600.00
I'll just put mine toward a medical bill with a balance. Yayyy!
DD: The economy thanks you for it! I'm going to tell myself that when I blow mine in the next two weeks on a camping trip, shoes and wine... although maybe not all three and maybe not exactly in that order.

Well. I should have received my check yesterday either yesterday or today and did not. my last two digits are 05. So whats the hold up? My brothers is 04 and he got his yesterday. The only difference is he mailed in his return and I went through my tax lady and got a rapid refund. I guess I answered my own question then. I wonder how long mine will take then? The online form says it should be sent out no later than 16 May. I guess I will just have to wait now won't I. LOL
DD: You did just answer your question, Melissa. That rapid refund probably means that you'll be getting your check in the mail. Let us know when the check is finally in the mail.

Does anyone know a number to call if your tax rebate was supposed to be put in your bank account May 9 but still hasn't been put in there? I just want to call and find out if I am one of the one's affected by these glitches. If I dont get my check until early July thats fine, as long as I get my money. It does suck for those who need the money now for medical reasons or whatever and cant get it because the IRS is too stupid to wire money into the right bank accounts.
I used to be a big supporter of universal health care. But seeing as the government cant even wire money into the right bank accounts without screwing it up how are they going to handle running a whole health care system? Makes you stop and wonder. Government cant do anything right.
DD: Kent, Did you try calling the Stimulus Payment Hotline at 1-866-234-2942?
