The Evils of Photoshop

No need to take responsibility for your actions. Just blame it on the program and getting caught. That's what Allan Detrich, former photographer for the Toledo Blade, does when discussing the issues behind his dismissal in this excellent American Journalism Review article. His transgression: Using photoshop to manipulate or move, add or remove elements within news photographs.

This a quick post, but this article shines a bright light on many instances of dastardly manipulation that lead to readers losing trust in the images photojournalists make and publish in newspapers and on Web sites. The biggest problem, evidenced in the test, is that some in the profession do not see much of a problem with what Detrich did regularly to his photos.

In the end, it is not Photoshop that manipulates images. It's the photographer.
